El Dorado Members: The Long Beach City College Men's Golf Team has been "suspended" for two years due to budgetary issues. Being suspended rather than being dropped allows them to fund themselves as a Club Sport for two years and still compete in their conference while waiting for state funding to improve. The Men's Club has approved forwarding the attached letter of support request from the LBCC Coach to our members who may be interested in helping.
Dear Golf Enthusiast:
Long Beach City College and the history of intercollegiate golf in California are truly synonymous. The first invitational tournaments were organized and administered by Long Beach's Buck Andresen over sixty years ago and drew teams from throughout the western states. With this success and the obvious interest of other community colleges, Long Beach and El Camino College approached the State Athletic Commission for recognition of golf as an official intercollegiate sport. Buck Andresen remained the Long Beach City College golf coach for twenty five years and dominated Southern California golf competition.
I took over the program in 1980 and we have continued as the premiere program that Buck began. Long Beach has won more state titles and compiled the greatest win-loss record in the history of the state. Since 1980, we have garnered four state championships. seven regional championships, nineteen conference championships and more importantly, sent over 85% of our athletes on to four year universities.
At this time, we are striving desperately to save this great heritage. The college is cooperating by not dropping the program, but merely "suspending" it. Our plan is to save the sport as a club team and continue to participate in the same league and compete as usual until the program can one again be funded by the college. It appears this can be accomplished in about two years. Our concern, at this time, is that we cannot receive any state or district funding for salaries, course rental or equipment. We are looking for businesses, individuals, clubs and organizations to help us keep this historic community college golf program alive.
Thank you for the great support you have shown through the years for all of the programs at L.B.C.C. and the many great athletes that have brought fame to our city. Should you be able to assist us I have attached a Solicitation Form that can used for this purpose. You may either send it via the U.S. Mail, or, as indicated on the form, click on the City College Foundation Website and donate via credit card.
Sincerely,
Paul Chafe
