We had a super turn out for the December Meeting and year-end Raffle. We would like to see as many members at the meeting throughout the year.
We have just two new members to the Board of Directors this year, actually not two new, one returning (Mike Montgomery) and one new (Doug Jones) taking over for Rick Evans as Special Events Chairman. Our Board is here to serve the membership; we are seeking members that would like to help on Committees that carry out various Club functions and activities. If you are one of those members that would like to become more involved please contact me or any member of the Board to see how you can become involved.
SCGA Team play begins the first week of January and will run through the middle of February. Each team is represented by 16 members of our Club playing against other clubs from Southern California. We wish them the best of luck and know that they will try to represent the best of our Club.
The Christmas Tournament was a huge success, hope that all of you had a chance to play. The first Tournament of the year is our January Scramble. If you have not signed up call Rich Dennison, he will do his best to get you in. Please remember that the first three Tournaments of the year are very crowded due to the lack of Daylight hours. If you come to the meetings and your name is not drawn in for a starting time, see Rich before you leave and he will probably be able to fit you into the mix.
Looking forward to a great year, hoping to see all of you at January’s meeting.
The monthly meeting was held December 14, 2004 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent. The restaurant provided ham with pineapple slices with fixings for dinner tonight for your nominal donation of $6. President Tom Link called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. and led the membership in allegiance to our flag. President Link then identified and thanked Past Presidents who have provided continual support to the operation of our Club over the years.
Past Presidents in attendance: Tom Conlisk, Richard Scoville, Steve Shure, Don Marmion, Mike Montgomery, Greg O’Brien, and Bob Livingstone.
Tom Burris, Bob Livingstone, Fred Gibson, and Tom McCutcheon represented our life membership.
Pres. Link formally apologized to the membership for the lack of communication on the rules change for the November tournament.
The Minutes and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.
Our American Golf guest tonight was the new Superintendent. He has about 6 years experience at this level. Questions were taken from the membership.
Team Play updates: John Davis noted that Saturday January 8 is their first match away vs Los Verdes. Roger Scaife noted that Thursday starts January 6 vs Costa Mesa at home.
Pres. Link noted that Bob Livingstone would be replaced by Mike Montgomery as immediate Past President as Bob’s work schedule forces him to miss several tournaments and general meetings. Bob will still be indirectly involved, as he has agreed to be the Club delegate to the SCGA. It was also noted that we have changed the News Editor position to Communications Chairman. Mike Marmer will be the ‘Chair
Rick Evans noted that the shotgun starts at 7:30 so be sure to be on time. Board of Directors members will be here at 6:00.
Committee Reports:
Ray McElhenney – Golf Commission: Ray noted that more trimming of the trees is going to be happening. The existing trimmings to the right of hole #11 will be cleaned up and removed. At this time the City is going through their golf course policies and procedures. Call or email Ray if you have some ideas on things that could / should be changed. It is antiquated and does need to be updated. Steve Shure wants the City to know that the low number of people playing the back 9 at both here and Rec. Park on weekends is less than 10, not their normal 48. Is this due to the condition of the course?
Several new members were at tonight’s meeting. They took the podium and told their names, occupation, and presumed handicaps. Welcome aboard.
Rick Evans – Special Events: Rick had noting to report tonight.
Jerry Leininger – Handicap: Jerry informed the membership that the ‘Board will post for you.
Nick Zamora – Entertainment: San Luis Rey on Jan. 30, the week before the Super Bowl (and also the week after the Conference Championships, great scheduling Nick!). Format will be a reverse waltz. Nick wants everyone to get involved with the away trips, to meet new people and play golf.
Don Russell – News Editor: Don was without words.
Dennis Tramer – Director: Update that our October Gross G.O.M. was Jim Fuchs. There were no cards for Gross submitted this month. Net had several good scores turned in. Nick Fitzgerald with a 66. Dennis updated the membership on the Flights winners and runners-up. See his article for the list. We will host the Quad Club this year on April 30. The list of players who took 3 points in the last Quad Club event is not available. The sign up list will be posted.
Rich Dennison – Tournaments: 7:30 Shotgun this Saturday. We will start on time. Be there NLT 7:00 to get signed up and allow everyone to get ready to play. 2005 home tournaments will be $40 = $200 per five-some. Rich thanked the members of the ‘Board for helping the home tournaments work. There will be Derbies following the Christmas Shotgun.
Old Business: None
New Business: None
Meeting adjourned.
First 15 names were called for January tourney sign up.
Raffle tickets continued to be sold. As typical for the December meeting we had over $4,000 of prizes to be won. These include select balls (Pro-V, Callaway), range cards, bags, booze, hats, gloves, money, etc… Dennis Tramer pulled the tickets and Rick Evans called the numbers, while Dan Ahearn and Bob Livingstone handed out the prizes.
50-50 was $150 tonight. The winner was Steve Liebeck. That was a quick $75 for Steve and $75 for Jr. Golf.
The membership drawing tonight was for $150. Of course we draw until we hit a member who is at the December meeting. We drew 9 numbers before hitting a member who stayed until the membership drawing. Number 185 held by Terry Henson was the winner. Merry Christmas Terry! The prize will start at $50 in January. The prize will increase $10 each month until it is won and then go back to $50. Frank Followell won in January 2004 and no one hit until this meeting. This happens all too often. Members are strongly encouraged to attend the monthly meetings.
Congratulations to the team of Mark Hansen, Grant Gonneville, Martin Suart, Roger Scaife and James Gibson for winning the Christmas Shotgun Tournament. We were blessed with as good a day, as you could possibly have in December, 80 degrees and sunny. The Derbies were a lot of fun as usual, you see a lot of interesting shots, and some very funny chip offs. The winners of the $30 derby were Brent Huntington & Phil Dauk, they both played great, good win guys.
The January Scramble is full, but you never know when someone will cancel, so if you’re not on the standby list call (562-822-2659) and leave your name and number.
At the General Meeting on January 11th I will be taking sign ups for the February 13th 5-man Select Drive, remember to have your name in the pitcher before the 7pm start of the meeting. For our new members I sit at the far end of the table.
I want to thank the Board and the volunteers for all there hard work and effort they put into the Tournaments each Month, without all the help, these tournaments would not run as smooth as they do. I hope that next year we can improve a little & the weather is as good as it was this past year. I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Rich Dennison
Tournament Chairman

See me at the Jan 11 Meeting to sign up for the Feb 20 Sierra Lakes Drive Trip.
No report this month.
Ray McElhenney
Golf Commissioner
No report this month.
With all the rain that we have had this year we were very fortunate to get our traditional January Scramble in this year. Kudos to Rich for his good timing and congratulations to all of the teams that cashed, our team was not among the fortunate again this year. The next tournament up is the February Select Drive, always a lot of fun to be able to hit a second shot from the Fairway. If you have not signed up see Rich at the meeting and he should be able to get you in. We will be taking sign ups for the March Waltz at this meeting, be there with your team and put your name in for the drawing, if you are a single or twosome see Rich before the meeting and he will put you on the list.
I just finished our first away trip at San Luis Rey Downs, part of the course was washed away by the recent rains but a great time was had by all. Great job Nick. Nick still has some room for additional groups at Sierra Lakes on February 20th and he will be taking sign ups for Diamond Bar in March. Sign up early so you are not left out. We have added some information about future away trips on the Club Website ElDoradogolfclub.org, check it out!
Thursday team is back on its wining ways @ 3 wins and one loss. If they are able to win there next two matches the will be in the playoffs. Saturday Team is undefeated 4-0 and will be playing El Toro @ El Toro on February 5th. If they win they will automatically qualify for the playoffs, come to the meeting for up to the minute results.
We are nearing Day-Light saving time which will give us many more starting times for our Tournaments, if you did not play in the first two see Rich and he will make some concessions to get you in. Lots of stuff going on, come to the meeting, talk to any Director or look me up before the meeting and I will be happy to answer any questions or concerns that you may have. See you on the 8th.
The monthly meeting was held January 11, 2005 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent. The restaurant provided a great Mexican dinner tonight that consisted of dishes of beef & peppers, cheese enchiladas, and beans topped with cheese, sour cream, and chips & salsa for your nominal donation of $6. President Tom Link called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. and led the membership in allegiance to our flag.
Past Presidents in attendance: Richard Scoville, Steve Shure, Don Marmion, Ray McElhenney, Mike Montgomery, Greg O’Brien, and Bob Livingstone.
Bob Livingstone, Fred Gibson, and Tom McCutcheon represented our life membership.
The Minutes and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.
Several new members introduced themselves, stating their name, occupation, and presumed handicap. They all went with Mike Montgomery for the informative tour.
Team Play updates: John Davis noted that Saturday team toughed it out in the wet condition and won their first match. Roger Scaife noted that Thursday was victorious in their first match as well.
Ray McElhenney – Golf Commission: Ray had nothing new to report tonight.
Committee Reports:
Doug Jones – Special Events: Doug thanked Rick Evans for his last two years as the Special Event director and is looking forward to this opportunity.
Jerry Leininger – Handicap: Jerry just reminded people to be sure their correct scores are posted. If you see anything that is not right be sure to let him know so corrections can be made.
Nick Zamora – Entertainment: San Luis Rey on Jan. 30 is our first away trip this year. The tournament is full but a few players still need to pay the entry fee. Nick is taking sign up for the February 20 tourney when we are playing Sierra Lakes. The format there will be 2-Better Ball. Entry fee will be $85. There will be one blind draw hole where all 4 scores will be counted. End of September we are playing Temecula Creek for this year’s weekender. Nick wants new members to see him as he wants to get them involved with tournaments at the away locations as well as here at home.
Mel Collins – Rules: Mel discussed the proper ruling for a ball on #10 that is lying against the driving range fence is Out of Bounds. Officially the inside edge of the perimeter post / support define the OB. Questions followed, including about on #11 where the telephone poles state fence OB. The official definition applies anywhere a perimeter boundary is in place,
Mike Marmer – Communication Chairman: This meeting is his last for awarding G.O.M. Net winner was Tim Yee (84 – 17 = 67), while Gross went to Tom McCutcheon for a 72. Dennis Tramer will be doing G.O.M. for 2005.
Dennis Tramer – Director: Quad Club to be held here this year on Saturday April 30. Sign ups will start at the February tourney. Quad Club is between El Dorado, Skylinks, Lakewood, and Big Rec with one member from each Club on each team playing for team points.
Rich Dennison – Tournaments: Scramble this Sunday. Lift, clean, and place will be standard. Ball to be played from the immediate area. Putting will be assigned. Carts will be cart path only, no exceptions. Be sure to take a couple clubs with you for each shot. February will be a select drive. Rich asked members to place their’ team members names on the sign up sheet when you sign up, not just yours. Pres. Link suggested we do everything we can to move the game along on Sunday. If you are the 4th or 5th persons in the putting rotation go on to the next hole and tee off. First 15 names were called for the February sign up.

We had more rain in the two weeks prior to our scramble then had been seen in Long Beach in 85 years, but somehow we were able to play on Lake El Dorado and finish. Then the Golf Gods decided to bring out the Sun for our January Scramble. I want to thank everyone who played in the 80 degree weather, we’re so lucky!
The Gross winning team of Doug Jones, Mel Collins, Kevin Orr, Greg Lester and Jim Ansite shot a very nice 60.
In the A-Flight the team of Paul Landreaux, Bob Rogers Paul, Andy and Chris Demetropolis shot a very good 65.
The B-Flight was won by Mike Hasselman, Bob Williford, Scott Royal, Brian O’Malley and Joe Escoboza with a nice 67.

See me at the Feb 8 Meeting to sign up for the Mar 20 Diamond Bar Drive Trip.
Well welcome to year 2005!!! We had our first meeting of the year last evening. There are some exciting items on the table for this year. Hopefully we as the Commissioners for Long Beach can accomplish all that is before us. Starting out by revising the Golf Operations Manual, and the Handbook for the Commissioner. Our goal is to revisit both of these manuals and make everything crystal clear and simple!!!. We will address everything from tournaments to policy and procedure. Each commissioner has the responsibility to forward any idea they have in order to get the changes implemented. So again this is the main goal for our Commission this coming year.
On to some regular business. Starting out with the rounds played in November and December. All the courses were down, and most of that can be attributed to all of the rain we have had for the past several months. Skylinks had 5,678 rounds played in November, and in December there were 5,607 rounds played. As you know there has not been any facilities for food or beverage, so the only report was for the rounds . As for the other courses the rounds for November were down 12.38%. For the year to date rounds they were down .78%. Our course for November was down 13.11%. The year to date totals were still 1.02% up. The December totals for all courses were down 14.24% for the month, and the year end totals were down 1.68%. El Dorado was down 20.09% for December, and .44% down for the year. These figures represent a 7,000 round decrease from 2004, but keep in mind Skylinks was closed, so these totals are a little misleading.
As far as the Jr. Golf Program goes their account is in good shape with a little over 77 thousand. What that program needs more than anything are volunteers for Fridays nights. That is when the golfers play 18 holes at Heartwell and they really can use some assistance from whoever can!!! If you are interested and would like to assist, contact me and I will get you connected with the proper people.
Our C.I.P. funds are still pretty much going for the bond. That account is slowly growing back, and we can get use from it in the near future, if needed. One final note on Skylinks. On 01/26/05, there was to have been an inspection in order to get the food and beverage situation started. Apparently there has been a few "bugs" with electrical situations??? Anyway the hope is to have those facilities up and running hopefully by the end of January. Enough for now. I will see you at the General Meeting in February.
February Tournament Handicaps
Do you enjoy rain? You are in the right place. While watching the news the other night it was noted that we have had more rain in Long Beach this year than Seattle Washington. (It never rains in Southern California). How lucky have we been to get our first two Tournaments in this year? Rich Dennison says its just good planning! If you played in the Select Drive in February you new just how wet this course can get, it was messy and hard to find a spot to place your ball. Despite all the problems I hope everyone enjoyed the day, it is great to get out, good job Rich.
We have a number of activities coming up in the next couple of months. Golfer of the year for 2004 will be played on the 12th of March. If you qualified by winning golfer of the Month last year see Dennis Tramer or Rick Evans if you have not already been contacted. Thursday and Saturday Teams have qualified for the Playoffs (great job) and they will begin play on March 17th and 19th, Best of luck to both. If you have not signed up for the March Waltz, see Rich Dennison at the meeting, he might be able to get you in. We are taking sign ups for quad Club on April 30th, see Dennis Tramer if you would like to give it a try, it is great fun.
We have two additional away trips planed over the next 30 days, Diamond Bar (March 20th) and Jurupa Hills (April 3rd.) See Nick Zamora to get on the list as a single or sign up as a group. The trip this last weekend to Sierra Lakes was a great success. It did not look that way as we were driving through the rain to get to the course and we were questioning our sanity when it began to rain on the first tee. It cleared up and turned out to be a great day!
The attendance for our first two meetings has been great, I hope to see all of you in March. It’s not to early to start thinking about your partner for the Member-Member, it will be hear before you know it!
The monthly meeting was held February 8, 2005 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent. The restaurant provided a selection of grilled chicken, rice, and beans with the salad bar tonight for your nominal donation of $6. President Tom Link called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and led the membership in allegiance to our flag.
Past Presidents in attendance: Richard Scoville, Steve Shure, Don Marmion, Ray McElhenney, Mike Montgomery, and Greg O’Brien.
At the start of the meeting there were no representatives of our life membership, but Fred Gibson did arrive a bit later.
The Minutes and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.
Several new members introduced themselves, stating their name, occupation, and presumed handicap. They all went with Mike Montgomery for the informative tour.
American Golf blessed us with their’ attendance. Eddy discussed the efforts to get the debris removed, proposed landscaping around the clubhouse (to be done from the ground up), and placement of sod to cover the bare areas. All projects are to start in the next few weeks and lasting a few months. They are to be using a rough mower to help this condition as well.
Team Play updates: Roger Scaife thanked his team. They are now 4-1. Tim Yee noted that Saturday team suffered their’ first loss last week, but with a win or tie this week we go to the playoffs.
Ray McElhenney – Golf Commission: Ray had nothing new to report tonight. No one had questions.
Committee Reports:
Doug Jones – Special Events: Doug had nothing new to report tonight. No one had questions.
Jerry Leininger – Handicap: Jerry noted that he has new member SCGA cards. They will be available at this and the next few tournaments. They then will be placed on the computer cabinet in the pro shop. At San Luis Rey there were (4) holes that placed extremely short due to the wet conditions. He called SCGA and was advised to post these holes as net par for each player. Jerry proceeded from there to identify the H/C committee (himself, Richard Scoville, Jerry Hodge, Bob Livingstone, and Tom McCutcheon). They have been diligently working on a system to replace the tournament handicap we have used for the last few years and have came up with a Mission Statement and Handicap Policy. Jerry at that time reviewed this plan with the membership. Scores to be included will start in July, 2004, and be for the current 12 month period or last 20 scores. Jerry identified that Quad Club and Team Play will play at SCGA index. Some did not like the change, however most did as the membership heavily applauded the action.
Nick Zamora – Entertainment: San Luis Rey went well. Feb. 20 is Sierra Lakes, 2-best ball with a blind hole on the back 9. Tourney is full, but he is taking stand by. Tee times to be posted by the end of the week. March $20 we go to Diamond Bar. $65 for that on with the format (2) on par 3, (3) on par 4, and (4) on par 5 holes. In April we go to Jurupa Hills. That cost will also be $65, with the format being a reverse waltz. This year’s weekender will be at Temecula Creek in September. Plan now to include this on your schedule.
Mel Collins – Rules: Mel had nothing new to report tonight. No one had questions.
Mike Marmer – Communication Chairman: Mike had nothing new to report tonight. No one had questions.
Rick Evans – Director: Only (2) cards were submitted for January G.O.M. Winner of Gross was Rich Gilmore with an 82, while Dennis Tramer took Net with a 69. When you submit your cards anything is possible.
Dennis Tramer – Director: Dennis is taking Quad Club signup. See him after the meeting. It will be held here this year on Saturday April 30.
Rich Dennison – Tournaments: Everyone is playing at 60% of their index this Sunday’s Select Drive. There is one team spot left at 12:00 if you want it. Holes 9 and 12 to be played further up, not from the back of the tee box.
Mike Montgomery noted he has been helping Nick with the Temecula Creek weekender. We have 8:00 shotgun starts on both Saturday and Sunday. Cost will be $320 double occupancy. We have 35 rooms now and can get more. Fliers will be made available on this event.
Pres. Link called first 10 names to sign up for the March tournament
Old Business: None
New Business: None
Meeting adjourned.
Raffle tickets continued to be sold. Doug Jones called the numbers and Dennis Tramer handed out the prizes. Prizes included all the usual goodies.
50-50 was $70 tonight. The winner was Ruben Gonzales. That was a quick $35 for Ruben and $35 for Jr. Golf.
The membership drawing tonight was for $50. The number of Bill Finlay was drawn. Bill was not at the meeting. Next month the prize will increase to $60.
As I sit here watching the rain, I feel very lucky we were able, to have been able, to play at Lake El Dorado. For the second Tournament in a row, we had to play in tough conditions, maybe in March we will get a dried out course. My team didn’t cash again, maybe next time.
The Gross - Flight was won by Mike Marmer, Jim Fuchs, Jon Burrows, Mark Perry and Roman Gonzales with a nice 15 under par 201. There must have been some golf shots in that group. The A - Flight won by are President Tom Link along with Don Marmion, Frank Followell, Tom Braun and John Suttie at 30 under par 186. These guys must be good! In the B - Flight The winning team of Don Russell, Paul Wildy, John Selby, Rick Soutous and Al Kuroda won with the Tournament low round 32 under par 184, I think Russell might be thinking about replacing Tom and Lector in the future. In the C - Flight I haven’t seen these guys in the winner’s circle lately, but when you are 26 under par at 190 you have to cash. Congrats to Jim McDavid, Matt Palma, Mike Tatalovich, Ken Rademacher and Gary McIsaac. I would like to remind everyone that when you win money you have 3 months to claim it or it goes back to the club, you claim it at a meeting or a tournament.
Our March 13th Tournament will be a Waltz 1,2,3. I am sure I will have some spots left, so call and leave your name and number so I can get you in. The April 17th Tournament will be a 1 Gross 2 Net 5some event, remember to get your lottery ticket before the start of the 7:00pm General Meeting for your Tee Time.
It’s already March and we are thinking about the Member - Member in May. This is always a great Tournament, so get your team together early. It’s going to be $180 per team this year. That includes: 2 rounds of golf, Tournament entry fee, Friday night hors d’oeuvres, Saturday BBQ or Breakfast with 2 drinks and more to come!

By some miracle we were able to get in our Tournament at Sierra Lakes on February 20, 2005. It rained all the way there, however, the course was dry and in good shape. It drizzled on the first few groups, but cleared allowing all our teams to get in before the rain started again, which didn’t stop until Wednesday. We had two Par 4’s made into Par 3’s because of the new lakes that formed earlier that week. Our own Russell Harder made a hole in one on the 14th hole, GREAT SHOT. All scores are posted and payouts will be at the meeting. Thanks again to all the players for sticking it out and playing.
Our next Tournament is at the New and Improved Diamond Bar (thanks, Tim) on March 20th beginning at 10:00am. The game will be “123 Waltz” at a cost of $65.00 each.
April’s Tournament is at Jurupa Hills. The date is April 3rd beginning at 9:30 am and the game will be “3 Best Ball” for $65.00 each.
I will be taking sign-ups for these and the weekender. See me at the meeting.
Well have you had enough of the wet stuff?? It does not affect my game, but I am sure some of you are getting cabin fever!! Our February meeting was rather long, but not a great deal of news. The rounds for the month obviously were down!! For all the courses the rounds were off by 20.18% compared to last January. Our course was also down 35.64% compared to last January. Again with all the rain these figures are a bit miss leading. Revenue generated during the month was not bad, at over $888 grand. $222 thousand going to the city.
The Junior Golf Program is in good shape with over $77 thousand in that account. Our C.I.P. fund shows a balance of a little over $50 grand. Keeping in mind that account is still the main source for the bond payment. The sub committees are working toward the goal of getting the manuals updated and simplified. My tournament committee has sent in our recommendations. The city and American Golf met to discuss all of the suggestions.
The Hall of Fame Committee has come up with some very nice ideas for the Hall of Fame room at Skylinks. The biggest obstacle will be the $10,000.00 dollars they expect it to cost?? They have asked the City for some assistance, but at this point nothing has been settled.
We had a demonstration from a company selling a system called Pro Shot. They have a G.P.S. system that not only assists the golfers, but it can locate any cart on the course at any time. It is designed to speed up play, send messages to any cart advising them of their position on the course. At this time American Golf and the City are making a decision to try it at Skylinks. I asked if this was something, if accepted by the City, that would come to the other courses. The answer was very likely not?? The cost per rider would be around 75 cents per round. Again nothing in stone just a thought!! Like I said not a great deal happening. I will sign off at this point. See you at the next meeting, if the course is not under water??
No report this month.
As you may or may not know, each SCGA member club has a Delegate, who is charged with among other things, informing the Club’s members about what the SCGA is doing or offering. As our Club’s Delegate, I wanted to talk about one of those things.
Aside from providing handicaps and course ratings, the primary service afforded to members of the SCGA is tournaments. Not only are SCGA tournaments a great way to evaluate yourself from a competitive standpoint, but they are also a way to play other courses. Over the years the SCGA has done – in my opinion – a wonderful job of providing more and more competitive playing opportunities to more and more members.
But you aren’t a scratch player, you say? That’s fine! What I believe has become the most participated-in event that the SCGA conducts is the SCGA Amateur Net Championship. The Amateur Net is broken down by handicap into four flights with 15 qualifying sites, across southern California. Many of our members have begun participating in this relatively young event, and I encourage you all to look into playing in it. At least one of the sites is already full, but there are many from which to choose, so act quickly.
The SCGA has revamped their website (www.scga.org) and by going there you may sign up for a Players ID and password through the link to the Rules & Competitions Department. Give some serious consideration to playing in one of the Qualifiers; you never know, you may play well and advance to the Championship at Steele Canyon or Cottonwood. Here’s to fixing your ball mark and one other, and to good golfing!
This years activities are moving into full swing. We just completed an away trip to Diamond Bar on the 20th of March and we are headed to Jurupa Hills this weekend (April 3rd.) Diamond Bar was a fun course to play; I hope we put it in again next year. Don’t forget to get your entry in early for the Bus trip to Soboba Springs on May 21st; it is always a great time. Dennis Tramer is formulating his team for Quad Club on the 30th of this month; make sure you on the list. I would like to congratulate both Thursday and Saturday Teams for their fine seasons representing El Dorado Men’s Club. Teams qualified for the playoffs, Thursday was eliminated in the first round by Rolling Hills and Saturday was defeated by Industry Hills in the second round. Let’s go get them next year.
It is time again to begin our 9-hole golf Tournament and putting contest prior to April’s meeting. The two events will be run by our Directors, Dennis Tramer and Rick Evans, The putting contest should start around 5:00 p.m.
We were extremely fortunate to miss the rain again in March. We hope our good luck will continue in April for this Month’s 1 gross & 2 net Tournament. If you have not signed up see Rich Dennison he may have a spot for you. We should have great weather for this years Member-Member along with the pairings party on Friday night. We have a lot of fun activities planned for that evening, get your game in shape and find a partner. We have arranged to have Calloway Golf come in for our May Meeting, we will be able to Demo Clubs and will be giving away prizes at the meeting, don’t miss it.
Hope to see all of you at the April Meeting…
The monthly meeting was held March 8, 2005 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent. The restaurant provided a Mexican food selection of enchiladas, beef and peppers, rice, and salad tonight for your nominal donation of $6. President Tom Link called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and led the membership in allegiance to our flag.
Past Presidents in attendance: Richard Scoville, Steve Shure, Don Marmion, Ray McElhenney, Mike Montgomery, Greg O’Brien, and Bob Livingstone.
Life members present were Tom Burris and Bob Livingstone.
The Minutes and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.
No one from American Golf was in attendance tonight. Pres. Link made comment that both the Thursday and Saturday teams have made the playoffs. Roger Scaife, Thursday captain, hopes to have the pairings yet this week. John Davis, Saturday captain, expressed the same.
One new member, Joe Ruiz, introduced himself, stating his name, occupation, and presumed handicap. Mike Montgomery took Joe on the famed informative tour.
Ray McElhenney – Golf Commission: Ray had nothing new to report tonight. He did mention that the Long Beach Golf Festival is fast approaching, and that they will need volunteers to help during the event. Information on the festival is posted at all of the local golf courses.
Committee Reports:
Doug Jones – Special Events: Doug commented that he is open to any suggestions the membership might have for Special Events and would appreciate any feedback.
Jerry Leininger – Handicap: Jerry noted that this Sunday we will be playing to 80% of our index with at least one blind draw hole where all 5 scores will be counted. He went on to inform new members that once they have their SCGA membership number they will be able to post at any course they play. In the mean time place your card noting your full name, date of the round, circle the tees you played, your correct hole-by-hole score, and to sign the card in the Men’s Club drawer in the Pro Shop.
Nick Zamora – Entertainment: We got lucky at Sierra Lakes in catching the round between rains as it rained for 4-days after our rounds were completed. Russell Harder had a Hole-In-One one of the holes that had been shorted to a par 3. Way to go Russell! The next tourney is Sunday March 20 at Diamond Bar playing a 1-2-3 Waltz. Nick has a few singles spots still available for this event. Jurupa Hills will be Sunday April 3, playing a 3 Better-Ball format. In September the Weekender will be played at Temecula Hills. Hurry to sign up for this one as they are giving us a great package for the 3 days of golf to include a 9-hole event on Saturday afternoon.
Mel Collins – Rules: Mel discussed “preferred lies” and when you put the ball in place in light of all of the off conditions we’ve had this winter. You need to physically pick the ball up and to drop it into play at the nearest point of relief. Do not use the club to move the ball.
Mike Marmer – Communication Chairman: Mike had nothing new to report tonight. No one had questions.
Dennis Tramer – Director: The 9-hole and Putting contest will start before the April meeting, Daylight Savings Time. Quad Club sign up is active. Be sure to sign up if you are interested in playing. It will be held April 30 at El Dorado. The 2004 Golfer Of the Year tourney is this Saturday. Everyone playing in it is to be at the course NLT 8:00 am. For February GOM there were 3 cards for Gross. Mike Gilmore turned in a 79, and Mike Marmer turned in both a 74 and a 72. Marmer wins with the 72. For Net 2 cards were submitted. Don “Who’s Your Daddy” Marmion ate up the course shooting a net 65, but Rick “The Professor” Evans won with a real subconscious 62 (78-16).
Rich Dennison – Tournaments: Rich has a few times available for Sunday. A single spot at 7:00, and 2 groups at 11:40 and 12:00 are up for the taking. The April tourney will be a 1-Gross, 2-Net. May tourney will be the Member-Member. Price is $180 per team for the 2-day event. Players will have their choice of Bar-B-Q or breakfast on Saturday. The Pairings Party will be held on Friday evening. Be sure to get a partner for this tourney and to also attend the Friday night soirée as there will be eats, chipping event, etc…
Pres. Link called first 10 names to sign up for the April tournament

The membership drawing tonight was for $60. The number of Ricky Soutsos was drawn. Ricky was not at the meeting. Next month the prize will increase to $70.
The weather link on the clubs web site was right on again predicting a perfect day for golf. The only thing that could have been better is for my team too have cashed.
The Gross –Flight was won by Bill Hasselman, Brent Huntington, Chris Price, Chip Unfried and Danney Andrade. This team has been trying and practicing very hard to win the Gross it looks like they finally found the right combination of Bar time and Party time. Congratulations on a great win.
The A- Flight was won by Dennis Tramer, Greg O’Brien, Steve Liebeck, Jay O’Brien and Jeff O’Brien It’s good to see these guys back in the winner’s circle it’s been a while for them.
The B- Flight was won by Mike Hasselman, Brian O’Malley, Scott Royle, Bob Williford and Joe Escoboza. I have a feeling that this group must be on steroids it seems they finish in the money all the time.
The C- Flight was won by Brian Ball, Nick Fitzgerald, Dewayne Kirksey, Eric Sasaki and Jack McCarthy. I know this Team has been trying a long time to come up with a Win they finally did it. It also shows me that maybe my team can win?
Our April 17th One Gross & Two Net Tournament has a few openings give me a call at 562-822-2659 and get on the list.
I’m still taking sign-ups for the Member-Member on May 14th & 15th the cost is $180 per team. By the time you get this we will have played Jurupa Hills, April 3rd. That’s two (2) tournaments in three (3) weeks. We played Diamond Bar on March 20th and were surprised how good the conditions were, except for one hole that was a little wet. The course played great and the greens were in the best shape we have played in years. The scores showed it too. Team Lester had 7 skins and almost won the net prize. Everything is posted on the Net and at the Club House.
I hope we had a good time.
May 21st is our annual bus trip to Soboba Springs. It is a shot gun start
at 8:30 am. The bus will leave El Dorado at 5:30 am and should be back by
3:00 pm. Take advantage of a free bus ride and enjoy a little hospitality sponsored by the club. We will be playing a good game of 2 scores on the 3’s, 3 scores on the 4’s and 4 scores on the 5’s. Sign up at the meeting. Cost is $65.00/each.
June 11th is a drive trip to Eagle Glen, our first time there. The cost will be $95.00/each. Details to follow.
Don’t forget the weekender, September 30 – October 2. I am taking deposits now.
Well maybe the rains have come to an end?? We just had our Commissioner meeting for the month. Not a great deal happening, but I will give you some updates. For the month of March the rounds of golf were down 17.28%. Our course was down 27.93%. The year to date totals were also on the negative side. All courses were down 18.48%, with El Dorado being down 31.94%. As you can guess the rains had plenty to do with these results.
Generated revenue is fine, for the month it was over $900 grand. Our course alone generated $256 thousand. The Jr. Golf program is thriving. Their account is at $76 thousand. Our golf hours are well within the limits. As usual the C.I.P. funds are mainly paying for the bond. I will ask all of you if there are any real priorities regarding any type of upgrades to our course? If any thing comes to mind please notify me. I will pass onto the C.I.P. committee, which I am a committee member!.
I also am on the Hall Of Fame Committee. We are now accepting nominations for this years Inductees. If anyone has an individual in mind please get with me. At each one of the Pro Shops, there are nomination forms. It outlines all the needed criteria. We are planning a very nice opening ceremony for the new Hall Of Fame building at Skylinks. At this point the date has not been set but I will keep you posted as to when that will take place. Well that should do it for this time around. As always, if any one has any questions or concerns, please lets discuss. See you at the next general meeting.

If you have not joined us for a meeting this year it is time to come out of hibernation. Callaway Golf is making it possible to demonstrate their newest clubs prior to the May meeting. They will set up on the Driving Range at approximately 4:30. In addition Callaway is donating an Oddesy putter in the putting contest. Sleeves of Balls and many other prizes will also be given away. The Callaway representative will be available to answer questions at the meeting about the newest in technology and why golf balls are adding distance. We will also have our 9-hole contest prior to the meeting. It should be a great night, so get out & join us, hope to see you there.
El Dorado is hosting the Quad Club this year and it will have been played on the 30th of April. Traditionally we have done very well; hopefully this will be another year that we are victorious. The Member-Member is May the 14-15, with our pairings party scheduled for “lucky” Friday the 13th. Rich has planned a combination putting and chipping contest along with a no-host bar. If you are interested in picking your favorite team Mr. Steve Shure will be available from 6:00 to 7:15 p.m. to record your information. (a possible wager?)
Nick Zamora is about to close out the bus trip to Soboba Springs so get your money in asap. Eagle Glen is coming up on June 11 and if you are interested in our weekender to Temecula Creek get your money in early so that we can reserve the space, it is filling up fast.
Rich Dennison will be accepting sign ups for the June Tournament, 4 clubs always fun. He will also be taking reservations for our traditional “Fathers Day” Tournament.
Lots of activity, don’t miss out.
The monthly meeting was held April 12, 2005 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent. The restaurant provided a food selection of beef brisket, charbroiled chicken, rice pilaf, rolls, salad bar, and a dessert tonight for your nominal donation of $6. President Tom Link called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and led the membership in allegiance to our flag.

Next month Callaway is going to be doing a demo day starting at 4:30 on meeting night. Update on American Golf, our last GM Brett has gone to Rec Park. Tim Johnson, El Dorado Pro, took the podium. Tim wants to be active with our Club and to play in some of the tournaments.
Team Play: Roger Scaife, Thursday captain, expressed his thanks to this year’s team for their participation. John Davis, Saturday captain, thanked his team as well. Unfortunately Saturday lost in the playoffs once again to Industry Hills. John noted special thanks members of his team, the restaurant, and everyone who contributed to make this year a success. We are looking forward to next year.
Committee Reports:
Doug Jones – Special Events: Doug commented that the participation in the “C” flight last tourney seemed to be light.
Jerry Leininger – Handicap: Jerry had nothing to report on tonight.
Nick Zamora – Entertainment: The Diamond Bar trip went well. Jurupa Hills was last week. Both courses were in pretty good condition (green wise). The next away tip is the bus trip to Soboba Springs on Saturday, May 21. We’ve got a shotgun start that starts at 8:30. The bus leaves at 5:30. Cost is $65 per player. We should be back by 4:00. The Temecula Creek weekender is fast approaching. Be sure to get Nick your $100 deposit to reserve your place ASAP. We’ve got golf on Fri, Sat, and Sun with 2 night accommodations and a special 9-hole tourney on Saturday afternoon. This should fill up fast. Nick noted that Mike Vaughn would host a seminar for any persons wanting to know the concept of and how to play Texas Holdem.
Dennis Tramer – Director: Dennis reported on the 9-hole tourney, Putting contest, and Quad Club tonight. We have 40 players signed up for Quad Club to be held here Sat April 30. This years’ inaugural putting contest and 9-hole tournaments went well today. See his report for the winners. G.O.M. for March; Gross won by Larry Grant with a 5-under 67(very nice round Larry), Net was won by Tom “Kingfish” Conlisk with a 75 –16 for an “Al Geiberger” 59 (report to Jerry Leininger’s office immediately).
Rich Dennison – Tournaments: There will not be a blind draw hole during this months’ tourney. As an added incentive to play well, Rich is paying a $25 prize to the low individual gross in all 3 flights.
The Member-Member tourney is May 14 and 15. Be sure to get your entries in before May 10. We will have the Pairings party on Friday night May 13 under the tent here at El Dorado. The party will be from around 6:00 to 7:15 with all the usual activities.
Old Business: Golfer Of the Year tourney has been completed. Net winner was Roger Scaife, and the Gross winner was Mel Collins. Both received a nice trophy for this feat, congratulations.

No report this month.
Well another month has come and gone. We had our Commissioners meeting last evening. Pretty much the norm!!. Lets start out once again with the rounds played during March. As you will see the rounds are still down, but our weather has not been very good, to say the least. During the month of March for all the courses, the play was down 13.8%, year to date rounds are down 25.7%. El Dorado was, for the month, down 12.74%, and the year to date rounds down 24.60%. On the other hand the revenue is okay once again. For the month the courses generated over 1.2 million in revenue. This includes everything from the cost of a round of golf to the bar tabs!!!.
Our Junior Golf Program is doing well. Their account is over 77 thousand, and the Little Inkster's account is over 73 thousand. Dan Coouch presented the Jr. Golf Program with four checks totaling 2,000.00 dollars. These checks came from several different charity events he heads up.
Our Hall Of Fame Committee met again, and we are close to setting a date for the grand opening of the new hall of fame building. We would like to open in conjunction with the conclusion of the City Championship. We are still looking for some Hall of Fame Nominations. The nominations close on May 9th. If you have a candidate, please fill out the form that is at our course and send it to either myself, or Livy. Along those same lines, if anyone has any memorabilia regarding the history of Long Beach Golf, and would like to donate it for the new facility, please let me know.
The Commission has recommended that the GPS system be installed on the carts at Skylinks. Our recommendation was to add one dollar per cart for this system. Again this is a recommendation, and Phil Hester has the last word. Our CIP funds as you know are at this point pretty much paying for the bond. The account is growing and possibly soon some funds will become available?? Saying that if you know of a project, upgrade or repair that our course really needs, please e-mail me your thoughts or speak with me at our meeting. I have a list of projects that have been pending for awhile, but as of right they will still have to wait!!. Finally the golf rounds for our club are in order.
As always if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. Play well and I will see you meeting night.

The monthly meeting was held May 10, 2005 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent. The restaurant provided a food selection of baked ham, turkey breast, yams, salad bar, and a dessert tonight for your nominal donation of $6. President Tom Link called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and led the membership in allegiance to our flag. He then expressed thanks to Callaway for their participation in the demo day and donation of clubs.
Past Presidents in attendance: Tom Conlisk, Richard Scoville, Steve Shure, Ray McElhenney, Mike Montgomery, Greg O’Brien, and Bob Livingstone.
Life members present at the start of the meeting were Tom Burris, Fred Gibson, and Bob Livingstone.
The Minutes and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.
Six (6) new members introduced themselves, stating name, occupation, and presumed handicap. Mike Montgomery took them on the Club information tour.
Our guest speaker tonight was Alfredo from Callaway. He appeared to be very excited about their’ new 3-piece ball that is hot off the club head and plays like a 2-piece around the greens, and their’ new 454 driver. The 2004 long drive champion played the 454. Alfredo fielded questions from the membership. It was noted that the balls they sell to the public are the same balls the pros use (he claims which is not the case with Titleist). He noted several of the Champions Tour players that play Callaway with no sponsorship. Winner of the Callaway driver was Jim Fuchs. The winner of the Odyssey putter will be disclosed later in the meeting.
Committee Reports:
Doug Jones – Special Events: Doug clarified that the handicap to use in Special Events is your current, not the tournament or 80%.
Jerry Leininger – Handicap: Jerry reminded everyone that this weekend we will play at L.I., and post regular score on Saturday and Tournament score on Sunday.
Nick Zamora – Entertainment: The weekender will be a shotgun start on both Saturday and Sunday. Players need to get their $100 deposit to Nick ASAP. The more people we get to pay the weekender, the better Temecula Creek will treat us. The package is $300.00 + tournament fees. It includes 3 days of golf, 2 nights lodging, plus the 9-hole tourney on Saturday afternoon. Our bus trip is scheduled for May 21 to Soboba Springs. Format to be 2 on par 3, 3 on par 4, and 4 on par 5 holes for cost of $70 each. The bus leaves at 5:30 am, be sure to get here early. June 11 we go to Eagle Glen. The cost for that one is $95.
Pres. Link commented that Bill Cooper donated 100 balls, plus range card for the Member-Member tournament. We have a new G.M., Larry Miller. Larry has been with American Golf for the last 5 years working in South Orange County and is excited about being here.
Mike Marmer – Communications: Nothing to report on tonight.
Rick Evans – Director: The winner of the Odyssey putter was Roman Gonzales. Rick noted there was great participation in the putting contest. 1st place Alex Gay, 2nd was a tie between Paul Wildy and Phil Dauk. April GOM’s as follows: Net Ed Lane (62), Gross Jim Fuchs (73).
Dennis Tramer – Director: Dennis reported on the 9-hole tourney and Quad Club tonight. Dennis expressed thanks to everyone who came out for the event and to those that helped him. Once again, we retain the trophy. Score was El Do 75, Skylinks 60, Lakewood 59, Rec Park 42. We had (15) 3-point winners. We also played net skins. The only bird that took honors was Tom Conlisk on 2 where he does not get a stroke. There were 4 net eagles, plus Grant Gonneville made a gross eagle on 4. Results of today’s 9-hole event were 1st Dennis Smith, 2nd Terry Fulford, and 3rd Tim Yee.
Rich Dennison – Tournaments: Friday night there will be a putting / chipping event at the Pairings Party. We will be playing from the blues both days. To win this event members are required to have played 3 previous Men’s Club events this year. Rich has times for Father’s Day. Note that if you sign up for the Father’s Day play you are responsible for the time. Any cancellation must be made at least 48 hours in advance of play or you will owe for that time. Our next tourney will be a 4-club playing from the white tees and at current index.

No report this month.
Well yet another month comes to an end!!. Our meeting was very long, but with basically the same items being discussed. First the rounds of golf. For all the courses during April the play was slightly down at 5.07%. Our course was down 12.78%. The year to date figures were as follows. Our course down 21.23% and for all the courses down 5.93%. The dollars grossed through the month were at slightly over 1.4 million, with $360 thousand going to the city.
The C.I.P. funds are at $242 grand, again this is mainly there for the re-payment for the bond. Jr. Golf is still very much in the black. That account stands at $80 thousand plus a few dollars.
At our course you have noticed some tree trimming??? Well that project is expected to last almost through the end of July?? There is some sand coming for our traps, so I was informed by American Golf. As I mentioned last month, if there are any upgrading projects you would like to see done at our layout, please let me know.
I was asked about having a chalk type board at our driving range. This would be updated daily showing the yardage from the teeing areas to the flags. This is an idea that I have passed onto the G.M. at our course. He was very interested , so maybe with some follow up this project will take place??
The G.P.S. system has been installed at Skylinks. The cost is $1.00 dollar per golfer. No there is no option, if you play Skylinks, and ride, you will be paying one additional dollar. That system will not be activated for any sanctioned tournaments.
As I said nothing really big happening, so I will end this update now. See you at the meeting.
I first want to thank the members for their cooperation in posting all their scores carefully. The number of calls I receive to change a score or to make changes has been very reasonable. (I know I just put the curse on myself)
I thought I’d review a few questions I have received recently.
New members – You will receive your SCGA number on the monthly Index Report. The report is posted every month in the hallway on the Men’s Club Bulletin Board. If you do not find your name on that list the month after you joined, please contact Mike Vaughn or myself and we’ll check it out.
Once you get your SCGA number, post every score on the computer at the course you played. If you forget to post, or the computer is not available call me and I will post for you. It is important that I get your name/ SCGA number, the date, golf course played, adjusted score, course rating and slope or I will not be able to post for you.
Once you name is on the Index Report, look for your 2005 member ID card.
The cards are stored in the drawer under the posting computer in the pro shop. Please feel free to look at the sheets to find yours.
T scores – The tournament committee will advise when to post as a Tournament Round. Just because you play in a monthly tournament, chances are we are NOT posting a Tournament score. Check at the sing- in table or look at your scorecard. We try to make it as clear as possible. If you still have a question…… then ask.
Rulebooks – I received a limited number of” The Rules of Golf” booklet published by the USGA. This should be a “must have “ for your golf bag.
I’ll have them available at the next meeting and our June tournament on a first come first serve basis.
Thanks again and …..
Hit ‘em long and straight and POST YOUR SCORES…

We are in the middle of the Long Beach Golf Festival, which equates to the course being close a few weekends during the month. In July we will have our Member-Guest, it is a great time to bring a guest to our great course and then get them to join the Men’s Club. If you have not signed up for the flights see Dennis Tramer ASAP. It is a fun event and an easy way to meet new people in the club.
The Long Beach Open is on the 27th of July and we will have our drawing for spots in the Long Beach Open Pro AM at the general meeting. Last year the club was represented by 5 different teams and 4 of them cashed, if you have played in prior years you know how much fun it is. Buy those tickets at the meeting!!!
Our August Tournament is the Partner-Partner. It is a fun event with four different formats over the two days. It is truly a “partner” event, pick your mate wisely. Fill out the form in the newsletter or come to the meeting in July.

I finally found the Tournament I can cash in, 2 years in a row, but you know; some times you need to keep it simple to do well. I noticed by the score cards that some players had really good scores and some who didn’t have very good scores. I heard from some they like the format, and from others the format sucks, anyway you put it, it was a fine day for golf.
The Gross Fight was won by a team who must like this format this is there second year in a row to have won. Alex Gay, Terrell Powell, Eric Burke, Bill Hunt and Dan Holley. Congratulations on a great win.
A-Flight was won by a last minute put together team of Mark Haver, Atul Anand, Brian O’Malley, Greg Stratford and Joe Escoboza nice win guys.
B-Flight was won by the team of Dennis Tramer, Greg O’Brien, Jay O’Brien, Jeff O’Brien and Steve Liebeck, this shows that if you keep it simple good things happen.
C-Flight was won by the team of Terry Henson, Paul Standish, Dan Ahearn, John Yeakel and Jack Wilemon with the low score of the day 196.
We had a great turn out for Fathers day with tee times from 6:30 to 11:30 and I’m sure every one had a great day Thanks for coming out.
In August we have our 2 day Partner-Partner this one is a lot of fun, the first day we play, front nine a Cross Over, the back nine Select Drive Second day front nine Partners Better Ball back nine Aggregate. Find a Partner Fast this one fills up.
See ya at the Meeting.

Well half of 2005 is gone! The commissioners meeting this month was completed in record time, about 45 minutes. With all the sub committees having completed their tasks, the rest if this year will be a little slow?
On to some basic information. The rounds for the month were down 1.98%. our course was plus 6.65%. The year to date totals are as follows, down 17.85% and our course down14.85%. Per the city and American Golf this trend is everywhere, just not in Long Beach?? Revenue for the month generated over 1.5 million, and the City % was over 373 thousand.
As you know the C.I.P. fund is for the bond payment, and the balance in that account is 323 thousand. Our tree trimming appears to be just about complete. Some final clean up is needed but most of the actual trimming is complete. The Jr. Golf program and Little Linksters accounts are in good shape with 84 thousand and 73 thousand respectively. There was the "D" day event held at Heartwell where all the proceeds go to the Jr. golf program. The exact figures are not in, but it was a huge success. Our Club hours are in line.
We submitted the names to the City of the Hall of Fame nominees we selected. I will advise you of these folks once the City gives the approval. There are still plans in the works for a nice opening for the Hall of Fame building at Skylinks. I will keep you advised of that date. One more item regarding the Hall of Fame Inductees. At the conclusion of the Long Beach Open, we will have a ceremony for these new members. It would be real nice if some of you planned on attending this ceremony. It will only be about 10-15 minutes. Well that's it for this month. See you at the next meeting.

Its summertime and we have lots of activities in process. The Member Guest was a great success with lots of participation. Thanks to all of you that made the extra effort in bringing a guest to our great course. I know that it is July and we always see a migration of workers show up that we have not seen all year, but I believe that our new superintendent is doing a great job and he has high hopes to maintain the golf course at its current level. Thanks to everyone that participated in the Long Beach Pro-am. We had 6 different groups that represented El Dorado.
The Partner-Partner Tournament is the 20th and 21st of August and we have just a few openings. Call Rich if you have not sent in your entry. We will be drawing for spots in the September Tournament at the August meeting. We will have a split tee start (1 & 10 tees) with a luncheon to follow. We will be recognizing our past presidents again this year at the Tournament and at the luncheon afterward. The entry’s in this Tournament are limited to 180 players, show up and get you name in for the drawing.
The Club Championship will be 54 holes this year and there will be 3 different ways that you can participate. If you want to play in the championship Flight it will be played scratch from the modified Black and Blue Tees. The Senior Division 50 & up will be played at scratch from the Blue tees. We will also have flights (how many depending on what type of participation). This Tournament will be played September 18, 24-25th. See Rich to sign up.
The weekender is fast approaching; we have had more interest this year than in past years, just a few spots left, talk to Nick Zamora if you would like to attend.
At the September meeting, Mike Montgomery will announce a slate of the individuals interested in running for elected positions of the Board of Directors. If you are interested in an office please contact Mike. In October, there will be additional nominations from the floor; the election will take place at the November General Meeting.
Come on out and get involved, summer is almost behind us.

The monthly meeting was held July 12, 2005 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent. The restaurant provided a food selection of food; beef fajitas, cheese enchiladas, rice, beans, and salad for your $6 donation. President Tom Link called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and led the membership in allegiance to our flag.
Past Presidents in attendance: Tom Conlisk, Richard Scoville, Ray McElhenney, Mike Montgomery, Greg O’Brien, and Bob Livingstone.
Several members of our Club has qualified and fared well in amateur tournaments. Jon Monat won the SCGA / NCGA Flights Championship help in the Monterey peninsula in June. A big round of applause followed, congratulations Jon! We are placing a spot on the website for members to post comments. Also, the golf equipment our members donated during the Member-Member weekend that were sent overseas to our troops was greatly appreciated. Special thanks to Tom Bentele for organizing that gesture of appreciation.
Life members present were Tom Burris, Fred Gibson, Bob Livingstone, and Tom McCutcheon.
The Minutes and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.
No new members were at the meeting tonight.
Committee Reports:
Our golf course Supervisor, Eddie, took the podium to give us a quick course update, and info on what they are doing for the LB Open. The plan is to keep the course the same all year, not just for this event. 250-tons of sand to be placed in the greenside bunkers, with 100-ton coming after the Open to fill them in. The greens will be getting faster as they will be turning the automatic sprinklers off and watering them by hand the week preceding the Open. Several questions followed Eddie’s remarks.
Golf Commission – Ray McElhenney: Ray had nothing to report tonight, no one had any questions.
Special Events – Doug Jones: Doug had nothing new to comment on tonight.
Jerry Leininger – Handicap: Jerry noted to new members that he has their SCGA membership card. He then went on to congratulate Rich Dennison for the 4-club tourney which yielded several low scores. Jerry commented that this was a free pass as it was a non-postable round.
Nick Zamora – Entertainment: The Weekender is fast approaching. Nick has reservations for 100 players. He is looking for 8 – 10 more teams. Confirmation on attendance must be made with your $100 deposit NLT than the August monthly meeting (Aug. 9). There will also be a $40 fee collected for the prize funds and incidentals. After the Weekend our next away trip will be to SCGA Member course on Nov. 6. Several suggestions for next year away trips followed including Oak Creek (Irvine) and the Navy course (Los Alamitos), as well as a few others.
Mel Collins - Rules: Mel discussed the proper ruling on your ball hitting your cart being moved my a person in your group. A lot of discussion followed.
Communications – Mike Marmer: Nothing new to report.
Rick Evans – Director: GOM for June is as follows: Gross to Eric Burke with a 69, and Net to Steve Liebeck with a 72-7 for a 65.
Dennis Tramer – Director: Entry into the flight tournament will be closed after tonight’s meeting. The 9-hole event winners were 3rd place – Steve Liebeck, 2nd place – Terry Fulford, 1st place – Jack Wilemon. Tonight’s Putting Contest was a count them all. 1st place was a tie between Kenny Louie and Terry Henson both carding 33.
Rich Dennison – Tournaments: Member-Guest is this Saturday paying a Better Ball / Aggregate format. We have filled the tournament teeing off from 6:00 until 12:30. For the August Partner-Partner Saturday format has been changed from last year. We will play a Scramble on the front, and a Cross-Over on the back. Sunday will be Better Ball / Aggregate. We are planning to play split tees in September as a team format with a great raffle to follow on Sept. 17. To be eligible for the Club Championship your index must be 8.4 or lower. Age for the Senior Championship is 50 and over. We will hold a Net Championship with in the flights if enough people show interest. Flyers on this will be available starting this Saturday.
Mike Montgomery coordinated the drawing of the three names for entry into the Pro-Am. He had one ticket each pulled from the bucket by Tom Herrin, Dan Zenovka, and James Gibson. This year’s winners of Pro-Am placements were Rich Geismar, Ruben Gonzales, and Tom Bentele. These guys will represent out Club with a Pro. We have an uncanny way of winning this event so get ready to play your “A” game guys.
Raffle tickets continued to be sold. Doug Jones drew the tickets from the drum and called the numbers while Mike Vaughn and Dennis Tramer handed out the prizes. Prizes included all the usual goodies, balls, hats, range cards, etc…

The weather was great, the rough had been cut and the course was in great shape and there were a lot of good scores. The company was outstanding and I think everyone had a good time. I guess it takes a member guest tournament to have some new names in the winners circle, I want to thank everyone who played in this years Member-Guest, It was a huge success with 89 teams showing up. Gross was won by Steve Liebeck and Doug Stodgel with a score of 108.
In the A-flight the team of Bill Fitzpatrick and Steve Werner won with a score of 103. The B-Flight winners are Greg Englant andVan Johnson with a score of 97.

I hope this summer has been treating you well and has allowed you to play more golf. The weekender trip to Temecula (September 30 – October 2) is getting closer. You will need your best game this year, because we will have almost 40 teams. The most in years! I do need to know how many ladies wish to play in order to get starting times for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I need all deposits in to me by August 15th in order to secure your reservation. Please see me at my table on meeting night.
Our last away trip this year is to the S.C.G.A. Course at Rancho California in November. I will also be taking sign-ups for this on meeting night. The cost is $75.00. You can play as a single or a double or even a 4 man team. The game will be three best ball. That’s all for now.

We are getting into more of our “serious golf” events of the year. August starts with the Flights Championships and the Partner – Partner. Please make sure to check the rules sheet at each event for two things; what handicap will be used – LI or Current, and how to post your score, Regular or Tournament. Please read these sheets carefully and if you have any questions, please ask before you play or post. This will save us both from making corrections after the fact.
Flights Championships – Match Play
The following guideline will be followed for the Flights Championships based on the USGA and SCGA recommendation.
“ If at least 13 holes are played, the remaining un played holes, for handicap purposes, shall be recorded as par plus any handicap strokes that player is entitled to receive on the unplayed holes.” As an example, if your match ends on the 15th hole, your score on holes 16, 17 and 18 would be par plus any handicap strokes you would receive and no higher. This rule is intended to avoid any inflated scores and also applies if you decide to “play it in” to complete the round.
This rule should also be used any time you play 13 holes but not complete a full round.
Thanks and remember, “try your best on each shot and post all your scores”

This year we have separated the “Club Championship” into three separate categories, Championship division (8.4 index or lower to qualify), Seniors (50 and over) and net flight division. The competition will be held over 3 days, two separate weekends, if you feel that you have the game sign up. It is time to sign up for “Team Play” again. If you are interested there will be a sign up sheet in the hallway for both Saturday and Thursday. If you do sign up be prepared to play in all the team tryouts.
The Golf course was in great shape for our Partner-Partner. Eddie has taken a lot of heat about the rough, but the greens are the best that I have seen for quite some time. Give him some slack on the rough, he is going to get it cut down.
We are nearing election time. The Nominating Committee Chairman Mike Montgomery is seeking interested members that will be announced as part of the Slate of Candidates during the September Meeting. If you have questions or feel that you would like to serve on the Board please contact any of the current members of the Board.
The 9 hole and putting contest will continue through October, show up early and give both a try, remember that you must play with a member to be eligible to win in the 9 hole.
I encourage all of you to attend the meeting. Becky does a great job with the food, try your hand in the putting contest and sign up for the “dreaded” Orange Ball Tournament.

See him immediately if you want to participate. This will be the best weekender in many years, no doubt about it. We have 22 times starting at 6:30am. We will be playing split tees. There seems to be a lot of interest in the Net Club Championship. I want to thank the Board of Directors and Bob Livingstone for all there hard work, with out them these Golf Tournaments wouldn’t happen. A big hand to Mike Marmer for doing the Sweeps. The A-Flight was won by Russell Harder and Mike Drew they are a new team this year they had the low net score with a very nice 163.4.
The B-Fight was won by a new partnership Brian O’Malley and Mike (Spunky) Hasselman with a score of 165.8.
The C-Flight was won by Rodney Sung and Rob Marchegiano with a nice score of 168.8 nice to see new names in the winner’s circle.

Well after a one month dark period, the golf commission met this past Wednesday. First we re-elected Skip Rowland as the Chair, and Phil Barlow as the Vice Chair. Both of these gentleman do a great job. I will again be on the Jr. Golf committee and the Hall of Fame committee.
The rounds of golf for June were down for all the courses by 5.16%. The year to date % was down 16.37. Our course for June was down 8.14%, and for the year down 16.68%. During the month of July the rounds were again down for all the courses by 1.19%, and for the year down 14.02%. El Dorado for July was down 7.92%, and the yearly totals were down by 15.82%. Our C.I.P. funds are at 488 thousand, and as a reminder the majority of that goes to the bond repayment program. The Jr. Golf Program is doing well with a bank account in excess of 90 grand!!. Revenue generated by the courses is okay with 1.5 million in June, and 1.6 million in July.
There will be a new member on the commission starting next month. He will be taking Bill Townsend's place and his name is Matt Knabe. There is a new "super" at Big Rec and his name is George Verero.
Next year the City is really pushing to build up the Long Beach Golf Festival, especially the Long Beach Open. Efforts to expand the field are under way and more advertising will take place. The new City Web site will help. That address is www.lbcgolf/courses.cfm. Go out there and check it out. If you see some areas of concern, let me know and I can pass that on to the City. With this being a new site, there is always room for improvement. Cal Olsen the designer of Skylinks will be having his golf tournament on October 17th. There will additional information on the web site, and I am sure there will be flyers coming out. Also the 49er Golf Tournament will be held on Monday November 14th. That will be held at Recreation Park. I am sure Livy can give you all the details you need. Our golf hours are a bit high, but we will not run out.
Well that should do it for this month. As always any questions or concerns, please let me know. See you at the next General Meeting.
Ray McElhenney
Golf Commissioner
I continue to get asked the question “ do I post this score today”. I can look at question two ways: 1) Does that mean you want someone else to post for you? –(The committee) or 2) Is this a postable score?
Let’s take them in order.
1. The reason why the Handicap Committee and myself want YOU to post is to get you into the habit of posting all your rounds. The only way the Handicap System is to work properly is to have everyone post all of his or her postable rounds, Period.
2. As far as the question of “postable round”, let me review the following.
9 Hole Scores – If you complete 7 to 12 holes, you are to post as a 9 Hole score. Make sure to select the “9 hole score” on the computer and follow the prompts just as usual. This includes our 9 hole monthly tournaments. Hint: I may run an audit report after next month’s 9-hole tournament.
18 Hole Score – If you complete 13 or more holes, you are to post as an 18 hole score.
In either situation, you are ONLY allowed to record Net Par on the holes you did not complete. Net Par is adding the Handicap strokes you are given to the par of that hole. If you receive a stroke on our hole 8, Net Par is a bogey 5. Two strokes given on the 8th hole, Net Par is a double bogey 6. Net Par is the maximum score you can
record.
3. Scores in both Match and Stroke play shall be posted for handicap purposes. This includes scores made in match play, multi-ball or team competition in which players have not completed one or more holes or in which they are asked to pick up when out of contention on a hole.
I hope this information helps and please contact a Handicap Committee member or myself if you have a specific situation or question.
Post all you score and “count ‘em all”.

It’s very early on Thursday morning and Carol and I are getting ready for Temecula away Trip. We are going to try a new course in Oceanside called Arrowwood, recommendation of Tim Yee. I will let you know how it turns out. For those of you that don’t know Tim he has a rule that any course that has the word Canyon, Lakes or Mountain is not for him so we will see (how about the word wood).
We have a newly crowned Club Champion, Ian McCutcheon. The competition was extremely close with Ian winning in a 2-hole sudden death playoff with a birdie on hole # 2 over Mel Collins. Rich Dennison will have the complete results in his news article.
We will be taking nominations from the floor this month to add to our slate of members interested in running for the Board of Directors. If you have some interest in becoming more active with the Club, check with me or talk to anyone of the current Board Members.
This month’s Tournament is the Dreaded Orange Ball, there are still a few openings, see Rich Dennison at the October meeting. The November Tournament is a new format this year, come to the October meeting and sign up your team.
The course is going to aerate the greens the first week of October and will be over seeding the second week, be prepared for some interesting putting.
See you at the course

Pres. Link brought to the attention of the Club that the Board of Directors is recommending we make Donna Yeager a member of our Club. If you have any special request let him know right away. Saturday and Sunday will be shotgun starts. He is taking sign ups for SCGA Member course in November. Greg O’Brien reports that are over-seeding there now, it should be great.
Mel Collins - Rules: Hole-In-One rules will change in 2006. If you win a car your’ amateur status will no longer be changed to professional. El Do Supervisor Eddie stopped by to note they are to begin aerifying the first week of October and to start over-seeding the week after. Jon Monat asked about the green collars and the South end of the putting green. Tom Gleim asked about the yardage bushes being gone and being able to recognize the yardage. Eddie noted they plan to provide some sort of method for the visual identification.
Dennis Tramer – Director: The Flights / El Dorado Cup is on-going. If you need a person’s phone number give Dennis a call. The 9-hole tourney had 17 participants tonight; 3rd thru 1st were Chris Benes, John Davis, and Tony Jimenez.

The September BBQ and Raffle was a success with Doug Jones and Dennis Tramer giving out $1,400 in Prizes and over $1,600 in cash. Thanks to all the Directors for their help and time, thanks to Mike Montgomery for his hard work at selling Raffle Tickets.
The new format we played seemed to have gone very well and I did not hear any negative response to the format. Thanks to all who participated and I hope you enjoyed the Tournament.
In the A Flight, we have as winners, the group who usually wins the gross, Mel Collins, Greg Lester, Kevin Orr and Doug Jones. The Blind draw helped!
A group who has not won in several years Rob Kuehn, Lance Lomax, Doug Lee, Dave Hasselman and yours truly Rich Dennison won the B Flight. How about that, even a blind squirrel finds an acorn sometimes.
Stan Farris, Bill Jackson, Gene Scott, Paul Djukich and Shaun Ferguson won the C Flight. This group likes the BBQ this is there second year in a row to win it with the low net of 187.
The Dreaded Orange Ball Tournament on October 15th has only a few single openings left, call and get on the singles list. We just got a new batch of hard orange balls so there will be plenty to go around.
The November 12th Tournament will be an Individual Nassau Tournaments be sure to come to the October 11 meeting to sign up as a group or an Individual. This will be a new Tournament; we will have a Gross Flight and Three Net Flights. I am going to pay front nine, back nine, and total.
December 18th is our Shotgun Christmas Tournament it will cost $45 to walk and $58 to have a cart, This Year it is going to be different, you have to come to the November 8th Meeting to vote and sign up as a 3-man team or a 6-some. It will be a lottery draw, I have space for 64, three man teams, and I will take singles to make up teams. Remember you have had to have played in at least three tournaments (at home or away) to play in it, so if you have only played in one or two tournaments, Oct. & Nov. are important.

I want to give a big “THANKS FOR COMING” to all who attended the Temecula Creek for the Weekender Tournament (September 30th – October 2nd). We had 33 two man teams which is the best turn-out in 10 years. We also had 12 ladies playing golf which was great. I think the shot gun format at 8:00 am was really good, because there was more time to swim, shop for more drinks or even play more golf.
A special thanks for all who helped keep the drinks cold, spread the food (the chili and cocktail wieners were a big hit), disperse the prize money, and clean up. I could not have done it without my fellow directors. They did a great job of picking up the score cards, posting the scores on our state-of-the-art score board, and figuring out the skin games. It was like a big happy family helping at a wedding.
In the midst of all this fun, we even had time to play some golf. There were two (2) hole in ones, one on Friday by me and one on Sunday by Bret Holloway. The weird thing was that they occurred on the same hole, #2 on the Creek. I am posting all the results on the internet, as well as, at the club. We paid out almost 50% of the field. Some people got real lucky.
We are already in the planning stage for next year. I hope we can make it even bigger. So for all those who attended, tell your friends and let’s keep this thing going strong. Thanks again to all.
November 6th is our last away trip this year. We are going to the SCGA course in Rancho California. The cost is $75.00, we will be playing 3 Best Ball. We are almost full, see me at the meeting for available spots.

Well yet another month comes to a close. We just had our monthly meeting, and a few interesting topics come up. I will start with the every month statistics. For the month of August the rounds of golf were down 1.18% and the yearly totals were down by 12.58%. El Dorado for the month was down by 5.65%, and for the year we are still down by 17.77%. With that being said the revenue is fine. The earnings for the month were over 1.6 million, with 409 Grand going to the City. If you have forgotten or did not know, a surcharge has been in effect at Skylinks since its opening in October of 2004. That money has and will be set aside for the C.I.P. funds. To this point that account stands at $115,451 dollars. That surcharge will stop once the C.I.P. fund gets to the point were there is always at least a payment and a half available.
Our Junior Golf program is going strong. There are people on a waiting list. Their account stands at a little over 95 grand. No real projects going on at our course.
Linda Cook of the Ladies club asked American Golf to please keep an eye on the practice chipping area because it has become a bit over grown!!!
All of the Commissioners expressed some concern over the fact that we are still awaiting some details on the new and improved manuals. A draft is on its way to us for approval, but no real time frame was given??
The Cal Olson Tournament that did so very well last year, will in all likelihood be canceled. As of this letter there were only 3 foursomes signed up!!! So unless some unforeseeable turnaround happens, this event will be scrapped, at least for this year??!!
A request to install a GPS system on the carts at El Dorado has been sent to Phil Hester. I cannot foresee that being denied. That will mean a $1.00 per rider charge will go into effect once the system is installed. The USGA has decided that the GPS system can be used in tournaments like we have, if we so choose to use them during our events. That will go into effect January 2006.
Lastly we were informed that American Golf has requested from the City a 4% CPI increase. They can do this every year as per the agreements they have with the City of Long Beach. This will take effect October 15th, and will be posted by October 7th. So by the time most of you read this, the increase will have already gone into effect. Sorry for the late notice but we just found out ourselves. If we have already gotten agreements for our October event, the charges will not be affected. Well I guess that will do it for this time around. See you at our next meeting.

The Dreaded Orange Ball is history. Each year we look down at the darn thing and hope we don’t screw up when it is our responsibility to play the hole with it. Many many funny stories, hope everyone had a good time this year.
We are coming up on our last away trip of the year, the SCGA course in Temecula. The weekender to Temecula Creek was a great success, if you were not able to attend I hope you will be able to make it next year.
The course is undergoing the last part of the scheduled maintenance for the year. The greens have recovered and Eddie is currently over seeding the fairways, should be in great shape for our November individual Nassau. If you are not signed up, see Rich Dennison, he may have a few openings.
The elections for next years Board of Directors will be held at the November Meeting. We have multiple people running for two different spots, Director and Treasurer, make sure you are there to cast your vote. It will also be a sign up for the Christmas Tournament this year. Remember that we will be playing two threesome’s in each group, and you can name the group. If you want to play be at the meeting to reserve your spot, space is limited.
Hope to see all of you at the meeting.

The Hall Of Fame committee will be meeting at 2:30 pm at Skylinks on October 26. The CIP fund is a major item of discussion. Discussion followed on the $1 surcharge and if they will be assessed if they don’t use it. Ray noted the USGA has allowed for GPS assistance in tournament play in the 2006 Rules of Golf.
Jerry Leininger – Handicap: Jerry had nothing to discuss. No one had any questions.
Nick Zamora – Entertainment: Tom Link noted the Weekender went well and that Nick did a great job. Nick thanked everyone who participated and helped out with making it happen. We had 33 teams at the Weekender this year, which is great! He paid out to about 60% of the field. Results are posted in the hallway and on the website. The hospitality room was a bit too small. He is working on going there again next year if we can get the same good package deal we got this year. November 6 is the next away trip to SCGA Member course in Rancho California.
Mel Collins - Rules: No report, no questions.
Communications – Mike Marmer: No report, no questions.
Rick Evans – Director: Tonight was the last Putting Tourney of the year. We had a 3-way tie for $16 each between Paul Djukich, Terry Henson, and Larry Grant. GOM winners for October were Gross; Ed Fernandez, 68, and Net; Todd Thiele 72 – 10 = 62. Both of these rounds were shot on the first day of the Club Championship.
Dennis Tramer – Director: Dennis had 23 players in today’s 9-Hole tourney. 3rd place and $25 went to Tom Baker, 2nd place and $40 to Terry Fulford, with 1st place and $50 to Dennis Smith (40 – 12 ½). Dennis you are to report to Jerry Leininger’s Handicap office immediately.
Rich Dennison – Tournaments: This Saturday we play the Orange Ball. Blind draw will be for the player in the same card position as a vacant player. All “Blind Draw” replacement players will be filling the Orange Ball holes the needing group has to fill. This is a version of the “Conlisk Rule”. The November tournament will not be a Stableford as a lot of players have voiced their opposition to that format. It will be a Nassau format. The December tournament will not be a blind draw tourney this year, but teams will assemble themselves as a 3-some. Players can sign up two (2) 3-somes for the 6-some time. Cost to ride will be $58, not the $67 noted in the Newsletter. We need at least 192 players signed up for the Christmas tourney as we have to pay for 220. The more people who play this tournament the better it will be. If we can get this many players we will have more money to give away to the players in the Christmas tournament. The Club Championship went real well. Rich called the winners up to receive their trophies as follows: “C” Flight – Tim Yee, “B” Flight – Todd Thiele, “A” Flight – Terry Henson, Sr. Flight – Don Picovich, and the this year’s Champion is Ian McCutcheon. Ian was not at the meeting. It was noted that Ina had to make a 12 foot snake of a putt on 18 to force a playoff which he did, and then went on to win a playoff Vs Mel Collins.
Old Business: None
New Business: Pres. Link called for a showing of hands for those that would and those that would not use the GPS system when it becomes available. The majority showed that it will be used.
Pres. Link called the first 10 names for the November tournament sign up.
Raffle tickets continued to be sold. Prizes included all the usual goodies, balls, hats, range cards, etc… Dennis Tramer drew the tickets from the drum, and Doug Jones called the numbers and handed out the prizes.
Meeting adjourned.
50-50 Drawing tonight was for $30. The repeat winner was Frank Followell. That was a quick $15 for Frank and $15 for Jr. Golf.
The membership drawing tonight was for $100. The number of Ed Gavaldon was drawn. Ed was not at the meeting. Next month the prize will increase to $110.

The stories of the Orange Ball were being told all afternoon in the El Dorado Bar. It’s amassing how the color of a ball can change how you normally play a hole. Why do you hit the Orange Ball out of bounds on a hole when you have not done it in years? It just seems to happen when you are playing the Dreaded Orange Ball.
The Gross winners this month are Mark Hanson, Brent Huntington, Chris Price, Bill Hasselman and John Hasselman.
In the A-Flight, we had a team of regular players who we do not see in the winners circle very often, Brian Boeve, Bill Copeland, Brad Wilcox Tony Glorioso and Jerry Warner. Congratulations on a fine win.
In the B-Flight, we had another team that likes the Orange ball two of the five won last year, Terry Sweet, Marty Suart, Wayne Setinek, Gary McIssac and Sebastian Sturdevant got the win this year.
In the C-Flight, the group of Tom Conlisk, Don Russell, John Selby, Paul Wildy and Lector Orrick won with the lowest score of the day 192. Nice to see these people in the winners circle again.
The November 12th Tournament will be an Individual Nassau Tournament. This is a new format for us. I am going to have a Gross payout and five net flights; we will pay out on a front nine score, a back nine score and total score. I have openings so give me a call and I will do my best to get you in. (562-822-2659)
The December Christmas Tournament is just around the corner, so be sure to come to the November 8th meeting to vote and sign up as a 3-man team or a 6-some.It will be a lottery draw, I have room for 64, three man teams and I will take single sign ups to fill or make up teams. The cost for the Tournament will be $48 to walk or 61 to ride. (Last month I gave out incorrect pricing sorry) Remember you had to have played in at least three tournaments (home or away) to play in the tournament. The shotgun start will began at 7:30am, do not miss out this is a Fun one.
Talk about Fun ones the weekender this year was the best deal in the club if you have not been on one make it a must on your calendar for next year...

Just about done with 2005!!. Yesterday we had the grand opening of the new Hall Of Fame building at Skylinks Golf Course. The ceremony was very nice, and the actual Hall Of Fame room is looking good. If you get a chance go by and check it out. Plus as I have asked previously, any memorabilia you may have please let me know. The more we can put into this room, the more attractive it will become.
Down to some business. Nothing real earth shattering this month. The usual suspects!! The rounds of golf for the month were down, by 4.71% for our course. Year to date our course is down by 16.4%. Overall for October the rounds were down 17.16%, and the yearly totals down by 6.23%. The revenue is not in bad shape however. For the month the gross income was 1.4 million, with 344 Thousand going to the city. The surcharge account stands at $126 grand. Again that is from Skylinks only, and going towards the C.I.P. funds. The Junior Golf account stands at 98 Thousand.
Our course is now under going over seeding of the fairways. This means that cart path only golf will be in order for at least 3 weeks, beginning 11/1/05. Another item was brought to our attention, sand is on it's way for all of the bunkers at our course!! The GPS System is slated to get under way, installation, 11/1/05. By the end of November all the carts should be up and running. The cost is $1.00 per rider.
Just a note regarding next years Golf Festival. It appears that the City is looking into really promoting this event, even going as far as possibly forming a tournament committee. This will consist of several Commissioners, outside folks and some sponsors!!! Like I have stated, they really want this to grow, especially the Woman's Championship. That event has slipped badly in the past several years. Well next month I will not be at the Commissioners meeting due to some business meetings I must attend. We do not meet in December, so you get lucky because this will be my last article for 2005. Like you really care!!?? Anyway questions are always welcome. I will see you at our next general meeting.

Each year the SCGA increases the amount of information available to the handicap chairman on the Internet. This month I received a notice that most all of the reports I use to get in the mail are now available “paperless” over the Internet. Next year, all course computers will be “server” based and updates will be made daily. This will make posting accurate information more important than ever. If you have any changes to make, please call me as soon as possible.
A part of the Handicap review process required by SCGA is the audit of 20% of the clubs scorecards. At present, we review the monthly tournament cards and away trip cards. That meets the SCGA requirement at this time. There is a good possibility that next year the SCGA will request audits of different clubs to make sure they are in compliance with their policy. El Dorado is in compliance but we may need to audit additional scorecards. Now is a good time to make sure we are in the habit of filling out our scorecards correctly. Information that should be included is your name, date of round played, SCGA number, gross score, your course handicap, Net score and any adjustments per the Equitable Stroke Control. Your scorecard must also be attested and signed to be official. The pre printed scorecards we have used for the last few years make this much easier for you to use but you should see some of the cards turned in during the monthly tournaments. If you need to track your personal bets, putts, fairways hit, or other information, I strongly suggest you use a scorecard from the pro shop.
One additional item the board is looking into is Internet posting. We are just in the fact finding stage at this time but one thing I did find out is that if we audit a score posted by a member on the internet, the player has the responsibility to provide the scorecard as back up. If there is no scorecard, the round will be not accepted. I do not know at this time if any penalty would be issued, but that is a question I have on my list.
More information on Internet posting will be discussed and presented to the membership for your consideration. I will keep you informed.

President's Corner
The time has passed very quickly and this is my last President’s Message. I would like to thank the men that have served on this years Board. Rich Dennison has worked tirelessly as your Tournament Director and will do a fine job as your new President. Al Ostberg watches the Clubs money more closely than his own and Mike Vaughn continues to do a fine job as the Club’s Secretary. Rick Evans and Dennis Tramer have done exemplary jobs as Director, Rick will return next year as Director and Dennis will move to the position of Special Events. Thanks to Doug Jones for his service as Special Events, it is a difficult position to handle. Mike Marmer will be stepping down as Communications Director, his input will be missed. Jerry Leininger is changing positions, thanks for a great job as Handicap Chairman I am certain that you will do equally well as the New Tournament Director. Thank you Nick for another fun year as our Entertainment Chairman and continued success. Mel Collins will continue as our Rules Chairman, thank you for you service during the past year.
Mike Montgomery will shift from Past President to Communications Director. (He just can’t get enough) We will have two new people on the Board in 2006, Terry Fulford as Director and Chris Benes as our new Handicap Chairman.
Please take a moment to thank all of the Gentlemen that serve on The Board of Directors, they put in a lot of time and effort to make the Club an enjoyable experience.
I wish all of you a safe and happy holiday season, it has been a pleasure to serve as your President
Tom Link
President
The monthly meeting was held November 8, 2005 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent. The restaurant provided a food selection of baked lasagna, chicken breasts, and Italian sausage and salad, with a cookie for dessert for your $6 donation.
Life members present were Tom Burris, Bob Livingstone and Fred Gibson.
The Minutes and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.
One new member was at the meeting tonight. Concerning the election of 2006 Board of Directors, Mike Montgomery read the nominees. This member then went with Mike for the New Member tour.
No one from the Pro Shop blessed us with their appearance tonight. It was noted they are over-seeding the course and doing a great job in trying to bring things back.
Committee Reports:
Golf Commission – Ray McElhenney: Ray had no report. There were no questions.
Pres. Link noted that Paul Goydos will be here tonight and will host a golf question and answer session. He then went on to ensure everyone has a ballot and has made their vote. Mike Montgomery, Greg O’Brien, and Richard Scoville, all Past Presidents, took the ballots for tabulation. Pres. Link then went on to note a couple changes for next year. Effective January 1, 2006 internet posting will be allowed, per the direction SCGA wants clubs to evolve. We need to authenticate at least 20% of the rounds our members post during the year. This is just an announcement at this time, more definition as it nears implementation. Secondly, the BOD came to the decision to approve the use of GPS units that have been installed on the carts. You can use any other GPS unit, so long as it only measures distance (not slope, wind speed, etc…).
Jerry Leininger – Handicap: Jerry noted that SCGA is in the housekeeping mode. If any members belong to another golf association please provide him your name, other affiliation, (No Cal, Arizona, Kansas, etc), and that membership number. Jerry noted everyone is doing a great job of posting their rounds.
Nick Zamora – Entertainment: We played the SCGA course on Sunday, and will be going back there in April next year. Special thanks to Greg O’Brien for hosting the refreshment center on the 9th tee box. The assistance of Tammy O’Brien, Debbie Tramer, and Jeff O’Brien made this a great place to visit. Nick noted that he almost had another hole-in-one, while Harold Dills scored with an eagle on another hole. Next year trips will include a bus trip to San Vincente in May, and other drive trips to Goose Creek, Eagle Glen, Redhawk, and more.
Mel Collins - Rules: Mel reiterated the matter that GPS devices allowable to use can only measure distance, nothing else. Jerry Leininger noted that this is SCGA’s rule on the USGA modification.
Communications – Mike Marmer: Mike was not present, thus no report.
Rick Evans – Director: Good participation for GOM this month. We had a tie for Gross at 69 between Jim Fuchs and Bill Hasselman. Bill shot a 33 on the back to win the tiebreaker. Rick noted that Terry Henson submitted a 70 as well. Nice rounds. Net had a lot of entries. Those of us who turned in rounds of 64 to 67 didn’t have a chance. Terry Fulford shot a 77 – 15 for a 62!
Dennis Tramer – Director: We are at the Final rounds for the El Dorado Cup. President: Mike Marmer Vs Jin Fuchs (Dennis makes Fuchs 1:2 favorite), Vice President: Jerry Leininger Vs Terry Henson (Terry 1:5, Jerry 3:1), Secretary: Tom Conlisk Vs David Pemberton (David 4:5 favorite), and Treasurer Vs Greg Giseburt.
James Gibson (Dennis favored James, but did not post a line).
Team Play captains took the podium. John Davis thanked everyone who participated and read the selected team members to the Club. A big round of applause followed. Our opponents this year will be Meadowlark, L.A. Royal Vista, and Westlake Village. Roger Scaife mentioned that is you have an interest to play on the Thursday team to wither see him or be at the course on Thursday.
Rich Dennison – Tournaments: Noticed the good attendance at tonight’s meeting. This Saturday we are playing a Nassau format tourney, not a Stableford. He mentioned how the Christmas tournament was going to be real simple this year. On the entry form circle if you are walking or riding and complete as many as you have for the event. Rich will add singles to short groups as best he can to fit substance and style. Cost will be $48 to walk, $61 to ride. He needs to collect the money tonight, NLT the next 2 weeks, or he will give your spot away to players who have their money in hand for payment.
Paul Goydos took the podium to a great round of applause. He noticed Bob Livingstone was not on the ballot and inquired if Bob had already held all of the positions. That was a good one. Paul noted how El Dorado and Long Beach have been good to him and he is glad to come back home once in awhile. Paul then made comment to Mel Collins to not be hitting the wrong ball, good laughter on that one too. He then started taking questions. Kenny Louie commented he had seen Annika advise to keep the shoulders square to help in making good contact. Paul confirmed importance of workstation set up and turning around to lateral is better than swaying up and down. Mel Collins asked the cost for a Pro to go on tour. Paul pays his caddie $1,000 per week + 10%, and then you have airfare, hotels, meals, and entertainment. Question came up on Paul’s status as of now, he is on Medical Exemption, and will play 12 more rounds next year. Dennis Tramer asked if he needs a new caddie. Paul’s answer was “No, I have a good one”. Paul commented that the players need to be playing the events after the end of the season and in non-televised events. Patrick Lynch asked if he has ever figured his hourly income, “No, but I work 24/7”. Paul noted how it is good to play with groups of players as a majority of them play for the good of the game. He reflected back to a Bay Hill round with Tom Watson and John Daly and that Daly had moved from 48th to 15th on the front side. John was playing well on the back until they came to a dog leg over water and John was asking for a bit more of the dog than it would give him. After being able to hitting out of the muck, and through the rough he reached the green. Watson asked him what he was putting for. John replied I don’t know. John’s caddie replied “17”. John two-putted for a 19 and went on to take a 2 on the next hole. Watson then said “That could be a record”, Daly’s response was “That’s what I’m here for”. When asked about the perks they get Paul said they are great. At a tourney in New Orleans their chef was Emeril Lagasse. In Moline, IL John Deere set up all of their equipment so the Pros could operate them. Jeff Wulwick asked Paul his favorite course. Paul thought a bit then replied Pebble Beach. Paul noted his bag consists of a Titleist driver, Callaway 3W & 5W, and Tommy Armour irons 3-PW + a rescue club he switches with the 3W and 5W, Callaway wedges, and a 2-ball putter, and plays a Titleist ball. He commented that there is one swing that fits you, not one swing that fits all. His most anticipated tourney for 2006 is The Hope, as it is fun to play the west coast. Inquiry about the Pro-Am events and if the Pros sometimes back out of the Wednesday event he stated that Wednesday play is mandatory, if you don’t play on Wednesday you don’t play the tourney. When asked about his lowest group score he noted it was with Nick Price and Tiger Woods, they all shot in the low 60’s. The membership again applauded Paul for taking the time to come to our meeting and be a part of our Club.
Election results have been tabulated and the 2006 Board of Directors will be as follows: President – Rich Dennison, Vice President – Jerry Leininger, Secretary – Mike Vaughn, Treasurer – Al Ostberg, Director at Large – Rick Evans and Terry Fulford.
Pres. Link called the first 10 names for December tourney sign up.

50-50 Drawing tonight was for $42. The winner was Tom Bentele. That was a quick $21 for Tom and $21 for Jr. Golf.
The membership drawing tonight was for $110. Justin Vander Broek pulled the number of Larry Oliver. Larry was not at the meeting. Next month the prize will increase to $120. We will pull numbers until we get a member who is present for this prize. The prize will start at $50 again in January, 2006

sThe end of the year is upon us and it has gone fast. The December tournament is a 3 man net tournament. It is a shotgun tournament that starts at 7:30 sharp, you must have checked in by 7:00 or you will lose out on your tee prize. The tournament will not be flighted or will there be a Gross. The Format will be 2 Best Balls. We have the Course all Day, so if your not in a Derby, you can play some more holes if you want, after the Tournament. If you are one of the players who signed up for the tournament and has not paid, please do so by the December 13th meeting, or you my lose your spot. I filled the tournament at the meeting and my stand by list is large. If you want to be in a Derby be sure to see Tom Link, Tom Conlisk, Billy Johnson or me, at the December 13th meeting, bring money.
At the December 13th meeting Jerry Leininger your new Tournament Chairman will be taking sign ups for the Sunday January 15th Scramble. (For all you new members he will be at the end of the table) You must have your name in the Pitcher before the start of the meeting at 7pm to have a chance to be drawn for a starting time. Jan & Feb are short hour months and there are not a lot of times available. Remember the Dec meeting has the best Raffle of the year, so don’t miss it.
I want to thank everyone on the Board the last 2 years for all there help and input without it the job would have been much more difficult. I also would like to thank all the Club Members for there support through out the years.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS to everyone. Another “Away Trip” Season has come and gone. A lot of fine memories to put in your golf scrap book of the mind.
I am gearing up for 2006. We will be starting off with a bang, beginning with Sunday, February 12th at General Old Golf Course in Riverside. The cost will be $65.00/each, with the 2,3,4 Waltz format. We are playing this course earlier than usual, so I expect some nice warm weather. We will be playing foursomes, so you can sign up as a whole group or just part of one. I will be taking singles as well, and placing them on teams. This is a good tournament for new members to meet and greet golfers, because we usually get around 70 players and there is always room for one more.
I’ll be taking sign-ups at the December and January meetings, so come see me at the tables.

Our 2005 year is fast coming to an end and thought it would be a good time to review the process of the “Dreaded Letter List”, as I heard it called recently.
The Handicap Reduction process is based on two primary sets of numbers. One is Exceptional scores and the other is the percentage of the time you shoot “net Par”.
The USGA sets the definition for Exceptional scores and the Handicap Committee follows those guidelines. Reductions do not take place after only one Exceptional score as we can all have ”just one of those days” when everything goes right in the cup.
The USGA states you should only shoot net par 25 % of the time you play. The Handicap Committee uses a number much greater than the 25% and adjusts according to your percentage. There is an established set of numbers the Committee works from so everyone is under the same criteria.
I would like to thank our 2005 Handicap Committee for the time and dedication they put into this year. Bob Livingstone, Jerry Hodge, Richard Scoville and Tom Mc Cutcheon put in several hours to develop and administer our current Handicap System and were a pleasure to work with. As we go into 2006, I’m sure we are much further ahead of other clubs as it relates to the SCGA’s policy on audit reports. Thanks again gentlemen.
Your next Handicap Newsletter will come from Chris Benes and I hope you will give Chris the same courtesies you have given me for the last 3 years.
Thanks to everyone and Happy Holidays.
Hit ‘em long and straight.
