Thanks to all of you that joined us for our annual Christmas Tourney. The Weather was cold but the rain held out until the Tournament was completed. I cannot say the same for the Derby’s. After the Tournament was completed A few brave soles ventured out into the rain, (I can’t believe we did that). It rained for a couple of holes but we were able to finish and remain relatively dry. I would like to again thank the Board members and all others for there support, it could not have happened without the many hours that it takes to put on this Tournament. Thanks Again.
I have posted the winning team on the website and the results are in the newsletter, congratulations to all of you that cashed, I hope that everyone had a great time.
Rich Dennison will be the Tournament Director next year; He has already taken sign ups for the January Tournament at the December meeting. If you are not in the Tournament and wish to get on the list give him a call.
I hope that each of you had an enjoyable Holiday season and Happy New Year; I look forward to next year as your President.
Best wishes to all
The monthly meeting was held December 9, 2003 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent. The restaurant offered a combination of pasta dishes for your generous donation of $6. President Bob Livingstone called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. and led membership in allegiance to our flag.
Past Presidents in attendance: Tom Conlisk, Richard Scoville, Steve Shure, Don Marmion, Ray McElhenney, Mike Montgomery, and Greg O’Brien.
Our life membership group consisted of Bob Livingstone and Fred Gibson.
The minutes from the last meeting and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.
Several new members introduced themselves and went on the introductory tour with Greg O’Brien.
Rick Evans thanked everyone for the support that has been provided this year. We have sold so many tickets for tonight’s raffle that Dennis Tramer needed to be sent to get more.
It was reported that someone with a Chevy Malibu in the parking lot has left the lights on.
Committee Reports:
Ray McElhenney – Commissioner: A report has been placed in this month’s Newsletter. No one had any questions.
Jerry Leininger – Handicaps: Effective December 1 we will be on-line with SCGA for posting of our scores. If you make a mistake in posting be sure to contact Jerry immediately so proper correction can be made.
Nick Zamora – Entertainment: We have some new courses to play next year. February 1, Super Bowl Sunday, is scheduled for our first away trip. Nick is trying to change that date with the course. Be sure to sign up for the away trips as a single or with a group. Away trips are always a lot of fun.
Mike Marmer – Rules: A lot of changes have been made in the 2004 Rules. Supposedly they are to make the rules easier to read and understand. Mike handed out sheets that covered the spectrum of the changes (clubs, loose impediments, etiquette, claims and disputes, amateur status, and immovable obstructions). Most of the changes are with the wording. Mike welcomed Mel Collins into the Rules Chair position. Mel will have this duty for 2004.
Rick Evans called for the tickets in the crowd that have “eagle”, “birdie” and “par” marked on their back side. Bill Jackson had the eagle for $15 and Ed Fernandez had the birdie for $10. No one claimed the par ticket.
Rich Dennison – The El Dorado Cup matches have been completed. We started with 64 players. The winners and runners up are as follows:
President Cup; Bob Livingstone and Mel Collins
Vice President Cup; Wayne McGhee and Tom Gleim
Secretary Cup; Fred Blanton and Rick Evans
Treasurer Cup; Ruben Gonzales and Mark Harrison
Rich went on to thank everyone for the support that was given to him this year, and for electing him to serve as the Vice President next year. The January tournament will be a scramble. 10 people were called for the January sign up.
Cairo Piercy – GOM: November Gross winner was Al Ostberg who shot a 1-under 71. Net went to Jim Baird who shot a nice 80 – 17 for a 63.
Tom Link – Tournaments: Be sure to be at the course NLT 7:00 am Sunday morning for sign up. Derbies will follow the regular tournament. Tom went on to identify who was running the derbies and inquired if spots were still available. It was noted that anyone playing in a derby must have also been playing in the Christmas tournament.
President Livingstone asked the winners of the El Dorado Cup to meet off to the side to get pictures taken with their plaques.
New Business – Jerry Leininger informed the Club that SCGA is in the process of identifying its’ members who have multiple association affiliations (i.e. NCGA, etc…) in order to incorporate them into the real-time score posting format that starts Dec. 1.
Pres. Livingstone called for Tom Link to come forward for the ceremonial transfer of gavel to our new President. Tom is excited about his upcoming role as our President.
Old Business – There was none.
Meeting adjourned.
Dennis Tramer returned with the raffle tickets and more were sold before the numbers were drawn. Mike Marmer, Jerry Leininger, and John Davis pulled the tickets. Pres. Livy called them out. Rick Evans and Dan Ahearn distributed the prizes to the winners. Lots of great prizes were won tonight which included golf equipment, money, and liquor. Several prizes were donated by the membership. Don Pichovich and Tom Bentele just to name a couple.
We collected $90 for the 50-50 raffle tonight. Dave Finkes had the lucky number that got him a quick $45, while the other $45 went to Jr. Golf.
The membership drawing was worth $160 tonight. It had not been won all year. The first number pulled from the can matched the member number of John Lynch. John was at the meeting and graciously accepted a check from our Treasurer, Al Ostberg.
As your Membership Chairman I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Our January Scramble is full & I have people on the stand by list. I want to thank all of you who had money in hand & a list of your group, it really makes signing up easy. Be sure to have filled out your lottery ticket before the 7pm start of the general meeting. If you have questions or need information about a home tournament please call 562-822-2659. I am going to try a little different format for the January Scramble. The normal two drives for each player, but I am also going to change the putting.
EXAMPLE
Decide your player rotation A B C D E Hole # 1 player A putts, misses, player B goes to where player A missed and putts it in the hole, move on to Hole # 2 player C putts he makes it move on to Hole #3 player D putts, misses, player E goes to where player D missed and putts he misses player A goes to where player D missed and putts it in the hole, move on to hole #4 player B putts so on and so on and so on.
Hope to see you all at the January 13th meeting.

The Board of Directors has approved our handicap schedule for 2004. The schedule has been posted on the bulletin board in the hallway for all Club events. Please take a few minutes to review this schedule. Questions regarding which handicap to play and how to post will be answered for you. Here is a brief summary of the schedule:
Monthly Tournaments, Away trips, Member Guest, Club Championship (Medal), our Weekender, and the Christmas Tournament will be played to the lowest of your current, or Tournament Handicap.
El Dorado Cup (match), Member – Member, and Partner –Partner, will be played the lowest of your Low Index (handicap) or Tournament Handicap.
Post “ T” scores for the Club Championship, and “count ‘em all” rounds of the Weekender, Member-Member, and Partner- Partner.
All other tournaments will be posted as a “ Regular “ score.
I will make sure you are notified before club events but this schedule should eliminate a lot of questions as we go through the 2004 season.
As a reminder, please make sure to post all rounds you play. Posting ALL your adjusted scores is the only way to establish handicaps that will make our tournaments as fair as possible for everyone. The handicap Committee will be posting Penalty Rounds for all rounds not posted. If you cannot post or forget to post, please call me and I will post for you. You have 48 hours after your round to post or notify me before a Penalty round is given. Thank you for your consideration and cooperation.
Thanks to all of you who joined us for the January Meeting. It was well attended and there is lot’s going on. Nick Zamora, our Entertainment Chairman, has 8 away trips planned this year. The first trip is to San Luis Rey Downs on February 22nd and the 2nd trip is March 7th at General Old. He may have a few spots for San Luis Rey, get your money in early for General Old, it will fill up quickly. If you are a new member it is a great way to meet some of the older members, see Nick he will help you fill out a group or just form your own.
Our first Tournament went off without any problems, but speed of play still remains an issue. If you are signing up to play early, your group needs to play in 4 ½ hours or less. If you cannot play at that pace, we will assign you a later time.
Remember that we will have a sign up’s for our March Tournament, which is a Waltz, see Rich Dennison prior to the meeting for details. If you do not have a group or are not selected in the drawing talk to Rich after the meeting and he will put you on the waiting list.
Both our Thursday and Saturday Teams are in the hunt for the playoffs. Thursday Team is 3 wins and 1 loss with one more match against Lakewood Seniors. They are in control of their own destiny. Saturday Team is 2 wins and no losses with pivotal matches on February 7th and February 14th with Costa Mesa Men’s Club. They are always tough, best of luck to Saturday Team. We had our annual Grudge Match between Saturday and Thursday Team this past weekend, I will let the Team Captains, Tom McCutcheon (Thursday) and Jim Baber (Saturday) give you the outcome. I know the stories will be entertaining and slightly different.
The Southern California Golf Show is at the Long Beach Convention Center February 27-29. I would like to see some volunteers from our Club. Volunteers receive free admission to the show, an official Southern California Golf Show shirt, free lunch and a chance to work with the pro’s of the Southern California golf Community. See Dennis Tramer at the meeting for details, or call him at (562) 596-7208.
See you at the meeting on the 10th.
The monthly meeting was held January 13, 2004 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent. The restaurant provided a beef, chicken, rice, and veggies combo tonight for your $6. President Tom Link called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m. and led the membership in allegiance to our flag.
Past Presidents in attendance: Richard Scoville, Steve Shure, Ray McElhenney, Mike Montgomery, Greg O’Brien, and Bob Livingstone.
Tom Burris, Bob Livingstone, and Fred Gibson represented our life membership.
The minutes from the last meeting and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.
As usual for the January meeting several new members were in attendance. They all took the microphone and gave their names, occupation, and presumed handicap. Bob Livingstone took them on an informational tour.
Team Play has had successful outings to start the season. Thursday captain Tom McCutcheon noted they won 31 –14. Tom thanked everyone. Saturday co-captain John Davis reported that they won 38-10. J.D thanked everyone at the course for their’ support. Next match at 8:00 am Saturday with practice on Thursday. J.D then tanked everyone on the team for what they did.
Committee Reports:
Golf Commissioner - Ray McElhenney: There was no committee meeting this month. Ray did comment that the Skylinks project is ahead of schedule. The clubhouse is to be refurbished, not torn down and rebuilt.
Jerry Leininger – Handicap: Jerry reviewed what is need for new members to establish a handicap. Be sure to hold your score cards until you get your SCGA number and then turn them in with that number on the cards.
Nick Zamora – Entertainment: Nick wished everyone a Happy New Year. There will be some new course on our away schedule this year. We’ll start out at San Luis Rey on February 22. He has a few places left at $75 per. The one after that will be at General Old. Nick is looking to make the cost a bit less, perhaps paying a few less places. If anyone has a course they would like to go to see Nick now as he is setting up the 2005 schedule. Our Weekender this year will be back to Singing Hills in October. Tee times for away trips will be posted in all of the usual places at the course and on the Club website. We are getting a new bulleting board for the restroom hallway. Bob Bernard is providing the carpet, and Nick’s company, Big Sky Design, is providing the framework.
Rick Evans – Special Events: Last year went great. Rick is looking forward to a lot of things for this year.
Mel Collins – Rules: Mel is looking forward to serving as the Rules Chair this year.
Pres. Link noted that the 2004 schedules would be available at the tournament this Sunday.
Mike Marmer – Director: Told membership about Golfer of The Month (GOM) and its’ requirement. 12 winners each year qualify to play in the Golfer of The Year (GOY) tournament usually held in February of the next year. December GOM winners were Net – Mike Montgomery, 80 –15 = 65, and Gross Greg Lester, 74
Dennis Tramer – Director: Quad Club to be held Saturday April 24 at Rec. Park. Teams will consist of 40 players. Anyone who won 3 points last year is automatically qualified. The 4-somes include 1 player from each club (El Dorado, Big Rec., Lakewood, and Skylinks).
Rich Dennison – Tournaments: This Sunday is the January Scramble. Everything the same a normal, except putting. Before you play, set your rotation 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 before going out. If on hole 1 the first putters’ putt doesn’t drop the second makes his putt. Supposing it drops the third putter gets first attempt on hole 2, and so on, rotational putting format? This is to hopefully speed up the pace of play. The tourney will be flighted, teams play to the score they shoot, no handicap. February tourney is Select Drive. Let us hope it does not get rained out like it did last year. 10 names were called for the February tourney sign ups.
Old Business: None
New Business – Tom Bentele asked if the scorecards in the Pro Shop reflect the same whole handicap as our tournament cards. They do.
Meeting adjourned.
ore raffle tickets were sold. Rick Evans called the raffle tickets out. We gave away a lot of prizes that included cash, a golf club travel bag, hats, golf balls, range cards, and more.
50-50 was $56 tonight. The winner was Ruben Gonzales. $28 for Ruben and $28 for Jr. Golf.
The membership drawing starts every year at $50. The number of Frank Followell was drawn. Frank was at the meeting, wining a cool $50. It will again start at $50 next month, increasing $10 per month until it is won, or until the December meeting when we draw numbers until we hit a member who is at the meeting.
I want to thank everyone who played in the January Scramble. We were a little late getting started in the morning, but everyone was able to finish. The A Flight had a couple of teams with 62’s, great score considering the new format. I want to congratulate all the teams that cashed. My team didn’t even sniff the money and I hope I don’t take on the T. C. lack of cashing.
Reminders: When you come to the meeting be sure to get your lottery ticket for tee times before the start of the 7pm meeting. Have your money and list of players ready when you come to the table, it makes it a lot faster on sign up. If you don’t cancel within 72 hours of the tournament there is no refund. All monies are due 2 weeks before the tournament, or you can lose your tee time.
The February tournament is the Select Drive. I have a couple of spots open, so call and I will put you on the standby list.

No report this month.
Well Happy New Year to everyone. We just had our first Commissioners meeting of 2004. Not too many topics, but I will touch on some. I will not bore you with Novembers numbers, so here are the facts and figures for December 2003. All rounds for the month were down 22.55%. Keep in mind with Skylinks being closed these figures are a bit misleading. El Dorado's rounds for December were up 6.23%. Year to date totals are as follows. Total rounds down 8.52%, and our course was down 2.11%. On the other hand the total revenue for all the courses was still going strong. For the month of December total revenue was $851 thousand. $198 thousand going to the city. The C.I.P. funds as you know are being handled by an outside broker. It is expected by mid March we should know exactly what amount of money we have available. The Skylinks project is still going very well. Some updates: the lakes have been completed, trees have been planted along 11,15,16 and 17 fairways. Four new holes have been rough graded on the front nine. Again this project is well ahead of schedule. A couple of other items regarding this project. The name Legends has not been totally approved, therefore the city is still accepting suggestions. I f you have a suggestion for a new name, or keep the Skylinks name, please let me know so I can pass on to the city. The club house as I mentioned in December will just be getting a new face lift. The bids will be going out in a few weeks. There was 1 million dollars allowed for this area. A poster of the new layout/design will be in all clubhouses very soon. You can get a look at exactly what this new course will look like, yardage and everything. The strategic plan is again on the table for 2004. This will be the project that looks into the policy and procedures of the golf operation in Long Beach. Jay Caballo made a few announcements at our meeting. One being the credit card policy. That program is going well, in fact it has decreased the cancellations by 5%. Also Jay Schaffer is leaving Heartwell Golf Course. Steve Dewitt is currently running that operation. At Recreation Park the new General Manager will be Jeff Defranco. Finally, the outside tournaments will be handled by each course. That does not mean the courses can book any and all the events they want, but they will be doing the scheduling for tournaments that are within the tournament guidelines. We had a discussion regarding where the Commissioners would be meeting on a regular basis. It was decided that we would go back to the Jr. golf facility at Heartwell. Maybe once or twice a year we will go to an outside site. Before I put you to sleep I want to bring out one final topic, and the is Long Beaches Jr. Golf Program. This program is and will continue to thrive in our city. One area that would greatly assist this program is to get some volunteers to help with the Friday night program. They have roughly 200 golfers playing on any given Friday night. They need adults to walk with these kids. If this is something you would like to do, please contact me and I can give you the specifics. Well that is enough for now. See you at are next meeting.

San Luis Rey Downs Drive Trip Results
The turnout for the February meeting was excellent, thanks for attending. We had a number of items to Raffle and Becky did another great job with the buffet. If you see her give her our thanks, she puts in a lot of work for the Men’s Club.
The field was full for our February Select drive Tournament (200 Golfers). Thanks to most of you for picking up the speed of play, all groups were able to finish before dark. We struggled all-day and finished out of the $$$$. I guess none of us are used to hitting our approach shots from the fairway.
Nick Zamora must have some special power. Most groups that went to San Louie Rey completed their round without getting rained upon. Unbelievable. Our group self ignited on the back nine and finished out of the $$$. Tough Format, waltz counting all four balls, too much for us. If you are interested in going on any of the away trips give Nick Zamora a call, the next trip is March 7th.
Rich Dennison is all geared up for the March Waltz or Reverse Waltz, yet to be decided. If you are not in give Rich a call to put yourself on the list.
We hope to see you at the meeting in March; we will be taking sign ups for the April Tournament, 1 gross 2 net. It’s also not to early to start thinking about the Member-Member in May, pick you partner and start practicing.
Tom Link
President
The monthly meeting was held February 10, 2004 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent. The restaurant provided a beef, ribs, rice, and veggies combo tonight for your $6. President Tom Link called the meeting to order at 7:04 p.m. and led the membership in allegiance to our flag.
Past Presidents in attendance: Richard Scoville, Steve Shure, Ray McElhenney, Greg O’Brien, and Bob Livingstone.
Tom Burris, Bob Livingstone, and Fred Gibson represented our life membership.
The minutes from the last meeting and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.
Our course General Manager, Mez White, took the podium with a couple of items of interest. Additional labor has been allocated for weekend care of fairways and bunkers, and a sand bottle refill station will be provided after hole 10. The course management has been after the gophers and figure they have them 80% contained. When this gets to 90% the mounds will be leveled (or call Bill Murray to perform his Caddyshack style control). Tree trimming is scheduled for this spring. Al Reinking commented on the amount and quality of sand in the bunkers.
Bob Livingstone discussed the upcoming golf show at the Long Beach Civic Center Feb. 27, 28, and 29. As SCGA is a sponsor they are looking for volunteers. Approx. 4 hours shift on any day. If you can help log onto the SCGA website or see Bob for more information. At that time Bob asked for any new members in attendance to come forward. Several new members were in attendance. They all took the microphone and gave their names, occupation, and presumed handicap. Bob Livingstone took them on an informational tour.
Thursday Team Play has qualified for playoffs. Thursday captain Tom McCutcheon gave his short review of the Thursday vs. Saturday grudge match. They are 4-1 and can not lose the playoff position. Tom thanked everyone for their’ support. Saturday captain Jim Baber expressed thanks to the Thursday team for last Saturday’s match, and made comment that McCutcheon’s putts should have been eyed as long as his speech. The Saturday team is in control of our own destiny. We need to win this Saturday at home Vs. Costa Mesa. Jim thanked everyone for their’ support, noted Tom Link, Becky and the restaurant staff, and Jim Fuchs (President of El Toro who beat Costa Mesa earlier this year).
Committee Reports:
Golf Commissioner - Ray McElhenney: Everything is in the Newsletter. This year Ray is on the Junior Golf Committee. Each Friday evening at Heartwell about 200 kids show up to play. They are looking for adults to walk with the kids for adult supervision. Ray answered questions on Skylinks noting that everything is on schedule with October set as the opening target. Their clubhouse will be remodeled, not replaced.
Rick Evans – Special Events: Thanked everyone for the continued support as he looked around and saw a full room. Rick pulled a number from the drum and gave a lucky member $20.
Jerry Leininger, Handicap Chairman made note that members who did not receive their index cards in January on the Fore magazine to see him after the meeting as the has them.
Nick Zamora – Entertainment: Tee times for San Luis Rey Downs are posted on the board by the restroom and on the website. Format will be a 1-2-3-4 Waltz. March 7 we play General Old. Cost is $55, and he needs to close it tonight, as we will be playing before the next monthly meeting. Format will be a 2-Better Ball, with two blind draw holes where we’ll count them all. Jurupa Hills is coming up. The format there will be 3-Better Ball. The entry for that will be $65. In May we’ll take a chartered bus to Soboba Springs. Nick is looking to get more people involved with playing the away trips. If you have any questions see or call him.
Mel Collins – Rules: Mel had a couple of statements. He was involved in a Team Play situation where he did not know the proper call on a teammate’s action, looked it up, and made the proper call. This Sunday Mel intends to be on the course for the first couple of hours marshaling to try to speed up play. He will have a cart and will be there to help find balls, take players up, etc…
Don Russell – News Editor: Don had nothing new to bring up.
Mike Marmer – Director: Feb. 28 is the GOY tournament, 2-weeks from Saturday. Please confirm by calling either him or Dennis Tramer. For GOM January only a few cards were submitted. For Net Don Russell turned in a 88 – 22 – 66 which wasn’t quite good enough as gross player Al “Big Horse” Ostberg shot a 71 – 7 = 64. The Gross prize was determined on a card-off between Mike Marmer and Doug Jones. Both shot a 70, and Doug won the card-off on the backside.
Dennis Tramer – Director: Quad Club has been cancelled for this year. See Dennis for the name and phone number for whom to call at SCGA if you can help at the golf show.
Rich Dennison – Tournaments: February tourney is a Select Drive, and March will be a Waltz. We are discussing if it will be Waltz or reverse Waltz as hole #9 can be a problem with a back up when needing three scores. Likely we’ll go 3-2-1. 40 teams finished before dark in January. As Mel noted, we will have some marshals on the course in effort to help the pace. Everyone needs to do what they can to move it forward. At the time Rich called the first 10 names for March tournament sign up.
Old Business: None
New Business – The ‘Board has been talking about a member who has been a long time member and done a lot of work with the Club and the game of golf. Past President Dick Scoville nominated Tom McCutcheon to be instilled as a Life Member. The motion was seconded and unanimously approved. Congratulations Tom.
Meeting adjourned.
More raffle tickets were sold. Don Russell drew the tickets and Rick Evans called them out. As always, we gave away a lot of prizes that included cash, golf equipment, shirts, golf balls, range cards, and more.
50-50 was $122 tonight. The winner was Pete Barton. That was a quick $61 for Pete and $61 for Jr. Golf.
The membership drawing tonight was for $50. The number of Bill Fitzpatrick was drawn. Bill was not at the meeting. The prize will increase to $60 next month.
Mike Vaughn
Secretary
As I sit here watching the rain, I feel very lucky we had such a great golf day for our Select Drive. For the second Tournament in a row, my team didn’t cash. I hope we don’t set a new record for the T. C..
The Gross - Flight was won by Mr.’s Collins, Forster, Lester, Orr and Pircher, with a nice 18 under par 198. There must have been some great golf shots in that group. The A - Flight won by Mr.’s Fernandez, Johnston, Johnston, Liebeck and McGhee at 25 under par 191. These guys must be good! In the B - Flight, we have a new group of members, led by Mike Hasselman. Along with Bob Williford, Scott Royal, Joe Escoboza and Brian O’Malley. They shot a very respectable 20 under 196. We’ll see if that’s beginners luck or not. In the C - Flight we had to go to a card off. I haven’t seen these guys in the winner’s circle lately, but when you are 25 under par at 191 you have to cash. Congrats to Stan Faris, Paul Djukich, Shaun Ferguson, Jay Lechner and Bill Jackson.
Our March 14th Tournament will be a Waltz 1,2,3. I am sure I will have some spots left, so call and leave your name and number so I can get you in. Remember to get your lottery ticket before the start of the 7:00pm General Meeting for your Tee Time.
It’s already March and we are thinking about the Member - Member in May. This is always a great Tournament, so get your team together early. It’s going to be $170 per team this year. That includes: 2 rounds of golf, Tournament entry fee, Friday night hors d’oeuvres, Saturday BBQ, Sunday snacks and drinks, and more to come!

Well gentlemen another month has come to a conclusion. This months meeting was not filled with much activity. First off the Tournament Committee agreed to add the 11th and final shotgun tournament to the 2004 schedule. It will be held on Monday July 5th at Recreation Park. It will be a 7:00 A.M. start for the Longshoreman of Long Beach. The rounds played in January were down overall but our course was up 4.7%. The revenue generated by all the courses is still strong with over $225 grand going to the city. The C.I.P. funds are in good shape with a balance of $521 grand. There were no Capitol improvements done in January. The Jr. Golf program is doing well. That account balance is over $71 grand. Some additional topics regarding Jr. Golf. Some volunteer work on Friday evenings would be greatly appreciated. Also if anyone has some spare time during the day, some phone assistance at the Jr. Golf office would be helpful. I can give anyone further details if you are interested. The Skylinks project is still on track, as far as the course goes. The club house situation has hit a minor snag, but that will get resolved shortly. F.Y.I., the name will be Legends at Long Beach. They are currently working on logos so they can go on the signs that will be placed around the course. Finally the strategic plan looks like a go in the next few months. Enough for this time around. Always, if any questions arise, please let me know. See you all at our next meeting.

General Old Drive Trip Results
Both Thursday & Saturday Teams Qualify for the playoffs. Thursday was eliminated in their opening match by an always-tough team from Brookside. Saturday Team has won their first two matches with Canyon Crest & El Niguel by identical scores of 28 – 20. Saturday’s next opponent is our neighbor Meadowlark. I would like to congratulate both teams for a great season. It’s time for us to bring home the trophy, keep it up Saturday Team.
We will have the nine hole Tournament for the first time this year along with our putting contest before the meeting on Tuesday the 13th. Come out early and participate, it is always fun. I am sure a few adult beverages will be served!
Quad Club has been on, then off, then on & finally it is off again. Our last option was to play at Lakewood on April the 10th. The problem was that the Greens were going to be punched and the City wanted to add a $12.00 surcharge on top of the regular fees, we decided to pass. We should be able to host this fun get together next year; the proposed date is April 30th, set your calendar.
Our next Tournament is 1 Gross two net. Rich Dennison still has a few openings if you are not already registered, see him at the meeting or give him a call if you want in, he will do his best.
Our major Tournament of the year is coming up in May, The Member-Member. It will fill up quickly; get your application in early. If you do not have a partner send in a single application with your $$$ and Rich will try to match you up with someone. To be eligible to win this Tournament you must have played in at least 3 Tournaments over the past year.
Look forward to seeing all of you at the next meeting

Several new members were in attendance. They all took the microphone and gave their names, occupation, and presumed handicap. Greg O’Brien took them on the informational tour.
Our course General Manager, Mez White, addressed the membership with update that they are knee-deep in course work. Sand bottles have been placed behind the 10th green. They are working to get money identified to fill in the sand bunkers where it is needed. Mez congratulated both the Thursday and Saturday teams for making the playoffs. Extra work hours on the weekends is still a priority,
Team Play – Thursday captain Tom McCutcheon noted their first playoff match is Thursday March 18. Tom thanked everyone who has supported the Thursday team. We will play Brookside fin the first round, half the team here and half the team there. The playoffs are single elimination. Saturday captain Jim Baber noted we came out on top of our division. Jim made note that Mez and his staff have been very accommodating in support this year. We start the playoffs Vs Canyon Crest this Saturday. Jim then ran down the list of this year’s Saturday team.
Committee Reports:
Rick Evans – Special Events: Thanked Jack and his crew for setting up the circles prior to the last tournament.
Golf Commissioner – Tom Link: Our commissioner, Ray McElhenney, was not at the meeting tonight. Tom made note that the Skylinks project is on schedule.
Jerry Leininger – Handicap Chairman: We’ve had some posting problems, as there are some double postings. If you are a member who has this problem please let him know right away so correction can be made. Al Reinking noted the computer clock was off by 24 hours, which attributed to that problem. Jerry also mentioned that several new members had been issued two (2) SCGA numbers. He read these members names and asked for them to see him so that they use the correct index number.
Nick Zamora – Entertainment: Results from the last two away trips have been posted. We played two courses in the last three weeks. General Old was a 2-beter ball with 3 blind draw holes where we counted them all. These blind draw holes were drawn after the match. Mel Collins team won gross and almost beat Nick’s team for Net, something Nick says is impossible. The April away tourney is at Jurupa Hills. Format will be 3-better ball. May is our bus trip to Soboba Springs. Format there will be a 1-2-3 Waltz. On the schedule June shows us to be going to Goose Creek. We will now be going to Oak Quarry instead. Robert Creighton shot a 77 – 10 for a 67, but that wasn’t good enough to beat Frank Kolb who shot a 77 – 14 for a 63. The 63 is 1 stoke under his age. The membership gave Frank a great round of applause.
Rich Dennison – Tournaments: The tournament this weekend will be a 1-2-3 Waltz. When you get to a par-3 hole, be sure to wave the group behind you up when they reach the tee. Dave Dvorchak may be at the tournament this Sunday acting in the capacity of a marshal. April 18 tournament will be a 1-Gross, 2-Net format. The Member-Member is scheduled for May 15 & 16. New member, Leslie Dergan, volunteered and worked three full days. Les was instrumental in putting together golf active setups for the kids. It was a big hit. Les was recognized in the audience and the membership gave him a round of applause for his efforts.
New Business – Al Reinking asked who was responsible for placing Team Play scores into the computer. The answer is the home team.
Meeting adjourned.
More raffle tickets were sold. Don Russell drew the tickets and Rick Evans called them out. Dennis Tramer distributed the prizes. As always, we gave away a lot of prizes that included cash, golf equipment, shirts, golf balls, range cards, and more.

The weather link on the clubs web site was right on again predicting a perfect day for golf. The only thing that could have been better is for my team too have cashed.
The Gross –Flight was won by Mel Collins, Doug Jones, Kevin Orr, Greg Lester and John Tamney with a nice 129. I think the addition of Mr. Tamney was an inspiration, because he is not a Mr. Short Pour. The A- Flight was won by Rich Gilmore, Mike Gilmore, Steve Giroux, Lynn Watkins and Dwight Summers. It’s good to see these guys back in the winner’s circle it’s been a while for them.
The B- Flight was won by Steve Cook, Bill Henigsman, Cory Read, Jim Oliver and Randy Wold they shoot a great 109, They must like playing early ,we’ll probably see them on the over achievers list next month.
The C- Flight was won by Greg Englant, Dennis Smith, Bob Myatt, David Pemberton and Geno Swartz with a 111. This was a team of new & old members that got together

Well another slow month at our Commissioners meeting. The strategic Plan has been pushed back for a least another month?? The rounds of golf were down for the month of February, but again that is because Skylinks has been included in the report. That will not be the case starting next month. For Recreation and El Dorado year to date the rounds were down 15.72%. For our course we were up for the month 17.14%, and year to date plus 10.37% Generated funds for the City remain good with over 204 grand for the year. The C.I.P. Fund stands at 89 grand for the year. Some tree trimming at our course is scheduled to begin in April. The Clubhouse area will be landscaped beginning in March. We did have a brief discussion regarding the rough at both courses. Jay Cabbalo stated that at this time of year is when it grows very quickly, but soon it will be dying off?? I myself found it very difficult to find those errant tee shots!!! Junior Golf fund is doing well, with 71 thousand in that "kitty". They are still looking for volunteers for their Friday evening program at Heartwell. See me if you are interested. There will be some nomination forms at our Pro Shop for the Hall of Fame. If you have a candidate please fill the form out and forward it. The Legends course is right on schedule, except for the Clubhouse. The city is still considering some contractors bids. It will in all likelihood not be complete at the time of the Grand Opening of the Legends, which is October 1st. Well that should do it for this months report. Any questions please bring them to my attention or ask me at our general meeting. See you Soon.

The essence of team play is competition and Sportsmanship. Two teams matched against each other in battle, then sitting together and commiserating over food and drink. (Usually Lots of drink)
All members of both Teams deserve the accolades of their teammates and peers, but one participant stood out as the quintessential sportsman of this last competition. Wayne McGhee, not playing his best Golf, never considered anything but pushing on. It had not been his best day but he hung in there and prevailed on the last hole. It was not the win, but his sportsmanship & the fact that he never stopped trying. It made a lasting impression on me about what Team play competition is all about.
A thankful Teammate
It is time once again for our Club to select the member that we would like to recommend for appointment to the Long Beach Municipal Golf Commission. The person we recommend must be a resident of Long Beach with no felony convictions (hey, I don’t write the laws, I just report them). The Commission meets on the third Wednesday of every month at 3:30 p.m. In addition to the regular monthly meetings, each Commission member is required to serve on either two or three sub committees, which usually meet 2-3 times per year. It should be noted that City Ordinance now requires all members of City Boards and Commissions to submit a Conflict of Interest and Statement of Economic Interest disclosure form which becomes public record
As we were not reminded of this election by the City in sufficient time to go through our normal nomination/election process, we will have to go through a condensed process. Anyone interested in running may contact Bob Livingstone by phone or email to have his name placed in nomination, or may be nominated from the floor at the April General Meeting. The election will take place at the May General Meeting, with the winner being submitted to the Mayor’s Office.
The Mayor will announce her appointments in June, subject to approval by the City Council. Questions about the election may be directed to Bob Livingstone. Questions about the Golf Commission’s duties or functions may be directed to Bob or to Long Beach Superintendent of Golf Operations Terry Lortz (562-570-4890).

Our biggest Tournament of the year is the Member-Member on the 15th and 16th of this month, if you have not sent in an entry contact Rich Dennison ASAP. You do not want to miss this one, lots of prizes, pairings party and a chance to pick your favorite team. Come to the May Meeting for all the details.
We have started our summer schedule and many activities are planned on meeting nights.
We have started a “Derby” at 5:00 P.M. It begins on the first hole and you need to be at the club by 4:30 to sign up. Members will be paired up by handicap, show up at the course for details, it is a great way to get involved and meet new people.
We will also have our nine hole Tournament prior to the meeting along with the putting contest. If you have questions or just want more information just contact someone on the Board for details.
The away trip to Jurupa Hills was a very pleasant surprise. I had not heard anything good about the course prior to the trip. We had a great time. Our group was 3rd out and we were able to play in a little over 4 hours and the course was in great shape. Just goes to show that you cannot always believe what you hear! We have several additional trips planned this year, call Nick Zamora and get involved they are a lot of fun.
In addition to signs ups for the Men’s club June Tournament we will be taking names for groups that are interested in playing on Fathers day, June 20th. This is a day when you can invite just about anyone that you want to play with, Wife, friend, mother in law, distant cousin. The men’s club makes a donation to Junior Golf each year and because of that we are given and extra day per year. If you are interested in forming a group or just want to play see Rich Dennison.

Several new members were in attendance. They all took the microphone and gave their names, occupation, and presumed handicap. Bob Livingstone took them on the informational tour.
Pres. Link opened that we started having a Derby tonight matching handicaps hi – low for $20 per player; $13 prize fund, $7 green fees. We’ll host up to 20 teams for these Derbies. Tom then went on thank our Team Play captains and co-captains and all of the team players for a great year. Both teams made the playoffs. Thursday lost their first match, while Saturday lost to Meadowlark in the Quarterfinals. The Saturday team has gotten this far both of these last two years. Saturday captain, Jim Baber, took the microphone to thank Mez, Bill, Jorge, Jack, and the staff as well as Becky and the restaurant staff. Jim went on to thank Mark Miller for the website support plus Jerry Leininger and the rest of the Board of Directors for allowing him to serve the last four years as co-captain and captain.
Committee Reports:
Golf Commissioner – Tom Link noted our commissioner Ray McElhenney did not have anything new to report but did note that the rebuilt Skylinks is going to be a nice course. For those who will play it all the way back it’ll be 7,000 yards. October 1 is the anticipated opening date. Several greens are in.
Jerry Leininger – Handicap Chairman: Last month 42 members posted the monthly tournament as “T” scores. Please post as “Regular” rounds, not “T”. “T” scores stay with you for a full year no matter how many rounds you play.
Nick Zamora – Entertainment: March 26 is Jurupa Hills and the weekend after that is Soboba Springs. Jurupa will be a 3 better ball, and Soboba will be a 1-2-3 Waltz. The bus leaves El Dorado at 5:30 for Soboba. Cost is $65 per for each tournament. June 5 is drive trip to Oak Quarry and the field is full. Cost there will be $85 per player. Nick has a full field for it and is taking stand by sign up for that one.
Our course General Manager, Mez White, is running the Derby on meeting day. We will do this every meeting night during Daylight Savings Time starting at 4:30. The event will pay 3 places. Mez read off today’s winners. As for the course, the aeration went well. They are a bit bumpy, but they’ll be mowed this week to smooth them out.
Mel Collins – Rules: Mel did not have anything tonight. No one had any questions.
Don Russell – News Editor: Don had nothing to comment upon.
Mike Marmer – Director: Mike has the results of the G.O.M. and the Putting Contest. The Putting game was Aggregate today with a 5-way tie for first at 1 under par. The kitty was $60 so these 5 received $12 each. Next month it’ll be a Partners Alternate shot format (as a Member-Member warm up). Mike hopes everyone can get their M-M partner to team up and participate together. As for the G.O.M. we had a few more cards this month. 2 cards for Gross were Alex Gay and Mark Hansen. They both shot even par 72. Mark took the edge with a real nice finish of birdie-birdie-birdie to win on the card off. Three Net cards were submitted. Stan Faris won a nice 77 – 13 = 64.
Dennis Tramer – Director: Dennis ran the 9-hole tournament today. He wants to see more people get involved in that game. Tim Yee took top honors.
Rich Dennison – Tournaments: This weekend is 1-Gross and 2-Net. Rich has a couple of times open for play. If you’re not signed up and want to play see him. Member-Member is next month. Let him know if you have a need to play early or late on one of the two days. This must be to him NLT the 11th. On Friday night we’ll have a Pairings Party, Bar-B-Q on Saturday, and snacks on Sunday. June is a 4-Club tournament. Let him know if you want this to be an individual or team event.
Bob Livingstone – Past President; It is time for us to select a person to recommend to the Mayor to serve as our Golf Commissioner for the next two years. We have to condense the normal 3-month announce, nominate, and election process to 2-months. Bob noted that the Commission meets on the 4th Wednesday of each month at 3:30 pm at Heartwell. Bob then asked the membership if they had any questions concerning the position. Ray McElhenney has been serving in this capacity the last two years and he has chosen to run for re-election. Nominations were opened. Jon Monat was nominated and accepted. The election will be on next meeting night. Bob will provide more information in the Newsletter.
Old Business: None
New Business: None.

More raffle tickets were sold. Dennis Tramer pulled and read the tickets while Bob Livingstone handed out the prizes. As always, we gave away a lot of prizes that included cash, golf equipment, shirts, golf balls, range cards, and more.

We got through the April Tournament without a drop of rain, even though the forecast was shaky all week. We where close to are tee times all day, and the pace of play was better. I want to thank everyone with there help with the speed of play, keep it up.
Four Tournaments in the books and my team still has not sniffed the pay window, Think my team may consider replacing me.
The-Flight was won by MEL COLLINS, GREG LESTER, KEVIN ORR, DOUG JONES and new member TIM BARNES. This is pretty impressive win, considering, they are a gross team.
The B-Flight was won by JIM BABER, RUBEN GONZALES, WAYNE SETINEK, BILL JOHNSON and DALE GREEN with an outstanding 199, we’re going to have to check there medications, great win, I knew it was only a matter of time.
The C-Flight was won by a group that had changed there team three times to come up with winning formula. BRIAN BALL, ERIC SASAKI, NICK FITZGERALD, JASSON MARTIN and ANAND ATUL, great job guys.
The MEMBER/MEMBER Tournament is almost full, just a few times left, get your money in by May 11th remember you had to have played in at least 3 tournaments in the past year to be eligible to win. The Friday night partners party is a lot fun, bring your putter and wedge for the putting and chipping contest.
June Tournament is going to be a four club tournament. Team format. Count two balls on par threes, three balls on par fours and four balls on par fives. You can not each others clubs, you must play with the four you brought only. We will play to our full handicaps. Be sure to come to the May meeting to sign up. Another month comes to an end. We had some interesting topics arise at out latest meeting. Let me start with the business as usual topics. The rounds of golf for March were up across the board. 5.22% to be exact. El Dorado was up 14.8%. Year to date the rounds are also up. 4.70% for all the courses, and 12.02% for our course. Course revenues are still going strong. Our course generated $444,467.19 during March. The city received $257,412.52 during this same time frame. The C.I.P. funds are at 142 grand. No improvements from this fund until the completion of the Legends Project. Junior Golf is doing fine, with over 71 grand in that account. The tournament rounds are in line. Tree trimming has begun at our course also. The Legends project is ahead of schedule. The entire north side of Wardlow road has been "grassed". What that means is that "stollens" not sure of that spelling, but they are basically a root that will spread into a very nice durable grass. The south side of Wardlow road will be completed by the end of May.
Several golf coaches were in attendance. They voiced a concern over a rumor they heard regarding Legends. They were under the impression that when Legends opened no Moore League golf matches could be played there?? Tom Shippy quickly put an end to that rumor. He informed the concerned coaches that the city has no intention of not allowing Moore League golf teams to play Legends as well as any Long Beach Courses. Good to see that support from the city.
The strategic plan has finally gotten off the ground. The committee has met several times and are putting things into place. American Golf has submitted their fee proposal to the city, It is currently being reviewed. Once they are finished they will submit to the fess and charges committee for their review and suggestions. Keep in mind the city still has the final say on greens fees, the commission can only recommend. Well that will do it for this month. See you at our next meeting.
Ray McElhenney

We have 3 months of Away Trips, Monthly Tournaments and Team Play under our belts and I wanted to review a few items with you.
· POSTING – Make sure to post all your rounds in a timely manner – you have a 48 hour grace period before Penalty rounds will be given for not posting.
· Always post as a REGULAR Round unless instructed otherwise. In our last tournament we had 42 players post incorrect as Tournament Rounds . If there is any question, please check with the scoring table or read the signs before you post.
· TOURNAMENT HANDICAPS –
There have been several questions as to the Tournament Handicap policy. As a review, the Tournament Handicap is based on the following :
1. You must have a minimum of 6 El Dorado event scores to qualify. Monthly Tournaments, Away Trips , Team Play, and any other club events are the scores used.
2. Scores older than 12 months are not used.
3. The most recent 20 scores are used if a play has more than 20 scores for the last 12 months.
4. Here is the table of scores to be used:
Number of Qualified |
Rounds to be Used |
6 - 7 |
Lowest 3 |
8 - 9 |
Lowest 4 |
10 – 11 |
Lowest 5 |
12 –13 |
Lowest 6 |
14 –15 |
Lowest 7 |
16 –17 |
Lowest 8 |
18 – 19 |
Lowest 9 |
20 |
Lowest 10 |
|
|
5. Using the table -Average the Lowest round Differentials totals.
6. Multiply by 96 %
7. Delete all numbers after the tenths digit
8. Convert that Index to a Handicap using the El Dorado Blue Tees Slope of 126.
If your Tournament Handicap is lower than your current Handicap , You will play to your TOURNAMENT HANDICAP.
Play to you current Handicap if you name is NOT on the Tournament Handicap List.
We will a computer available at meetings and Tournaments if you would like to see your profile. I will also be happy to print out your profile if you give me a call or Email.
Pleas contact me if you have any questions.
Count ‘ em all and try your best on every hole

There are several reasons why I want to remain as the Golf Commissioner for the El Dorado Men's Golf Club. The first is certainly not for the free golf!! Since I have pretty much run the table in regards to being a board member, as Commissioner I can still assist the board and the membership without actually being a board member. Our golf club is very important to me personally so being on the Commission gives me the opportunity to make sure our club as well as the other clubs, and the city get a fair shake in all matters. I want to finish a least another term because the first was listen and learn. With the Legends Project absorbing most of everyone's energy, not much else was happening, therefore I want to get involved with the upcoming manual revisions.
As far as what I plan on doing as a Commissioner is fairly straight forward. I will remain active on the two sub committees I am currently on. I also will be the voice for our membership. I want the membership to understand that my position is to assist them as well as seeing that golf in Long Beach continues to prosper. Any concerns or questions will always be looked at in a positive fashion, and brought to the commission with the understanding that if it benefits the game of golf something can be done. American Golf also plays a big role in this picture, so I will be working hand in hand with them to assure that again our club receives a fair shake in any and all matters.
Jon Monat
There are several issues which are of importance to El Dorado Men’s Club and Long Beach golfers in general. First and foremost, there is a need to protect the availability of daily fee golf on the Long Beach courses. Even though Skylinks is supposed to absorb some tournament play, there is some concern that the tournaments to be run there would be new tournaments at higher fees than paid by daily golfers. The question of businesses having access to the golf courses for tournaments came up many times in the recent focus groups.
Secondly, it is important to protect the status of the men’s and women’s golf clubs. The Men’s Club is a strong protector of the quality of El Dorado Golf Course and a strong advocate of quality golf for a fair fee. Without the clubs to protect the courses, golf in Long Beach would be different and more expensive than it is now.
We have a good working relationship with the course management, the City and American Golf. I would work hard to maintain that relationship while keeping the focus on accountability.
Thank you for considering me for Golf Commissioner.

If you did not play in this years Member-Member Tournament you missed a great time. It started on Friday Evening with the pairings party. There was plenty of food and everyone that attended seemed to have a wonderful time. Congratulations to The Division winners, Gross,Bob Forster-Steve Pircher with a fine 218 (2 over par).
“A” Flight Dave Hasselman-Doug Lee, “B” Flight Terry Sweet-Gary McIsaac, “C” Flight Stan Faris-Gene Scott. Check the website for the overall winners.
Special thanks to Rich Dennison, Tournament Director, Great Job. Jerry Leininger for the Food donation and Steve Shure for his help at the pairings party.
Our next Tournament is a four club team event. Have you figured out what you will use ? This one is always fun, if you have not signed up see Rich Dennison at the June meeting.
Do not forget about the Fathers Day get together on June 20th, it is not a regular Tournament, you can invite anyone that you would like.
Hope to see all of you at the next meeting.
Tom Link
President
The monthly meeting was held May 11, 2004 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent. President Tom Link called the meeting to order at approximately 7:00 p.m. and led the membership in allegiance to our flag.
Past Presidents in attendance included Tom Conlisk, Steve Shure, Richard Scoville, Ray McElhenney, Greg O’Brien, Mike Montgomery and Bob Livingstone.
Bob Livingstone and Fred Gibson represented our life membership.
Bob Livingstone announced that elections would be held tonight for the Long Beach Golf Commission Representative. The candidates are:
Ray McElhenney
Jon Monat
Ballots were past out to the membership.
The minutes from the last meeting and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.
Several new members were in attendance. They all took the microphone and gave their names, occupation, and alleged handicap. Past president Greg O’Brien took them on the informational tour.
Ray McElhenney gave the Golf Commission Report. Ray presented the highlights as the detail was printed in the newsletter. The Junior Golf subcommittee of the commission is looking for volunteers for a special needs junior golfers event May 18th at Hartwell. Legends of Long Beach (Skylinks) construction is on schedule. The north side of Wardlow has been planted and the south side will be done soon. American Golf is proposing fee increases but the details are not yet available. The commission subcommittee will review soon and the commission will give their recommendations to the city. The commission functions in an advisory function only on fees.
Back to the election. Ballots were collected and the election committee went off to count them.
President Link announced that this weekend’s Member-Member Tournament would be preceded by a pairings party on Friday night, May 14th. It starts at 5PM. There will be a pitch and putt event run Dennis Tramer during the party. Hors d’oeuvres will be served and there will be a no host bar. Those who want to add a little spice to the event are encouraged to see Steve Shure at the party.
Committee Reports:
Special Events – Rick Evans said he would be taking sign ups for Special Events both Saturday and Sunday of the Member-Member and there would be sweeps both days (tournament format each day). One gross team and three places for each net flight will cash.
Handicap – Jerry Leininger warned the new members that due to a glitch at SCGA, they may have been assigned two handicap index numbers. Please be careful to use only the number listed on the El Dorado Handicap Index Sheet. Concerning the Member-Member, it will be played at Low Index or Tournament Index, which ever is lower. The committee will post all the scores for both Saturday and Sunday.
Entertainment Chairman – Nick Zamora thanked all the participants as we had two road trips on back to back weekends – Jurupa Hills on April 25th and Soboba Springs on May 1st. Both courses were in great shape and fun was had by all. The next road trip will be June 5th to Oak Quarry and the cost is $85. I believe there were a few single spots available but the field was pretty well filled out. The format will be foursome two best ball with the caveat of one blind hole on each side where you count ‘em all. Nick also told everyone to start thinking about the weekender to Singing Hills in October.
Back to the election. Ray McElhenney was declared the winner and will serve as the club’s representative to the Golf Commission for the next two years. Congrats, Ray. Livy asked for a motion to destroy the ballots. It was so moved and seconded and passed by voice vote. The ballots were destroyed.
Rules – Mel Collins described a situation in stroke play that had to do with thinking a tee shot was out of bounds and hitting a provisional and then being unable to determine if the first ball was out of bounds or not. By that time, I was like Vinnie Barbarino - I was so confused I could not make sense of it all. And my notes were so messy, I could not figure out what I wrote or the decision. We will have to have Mel run that one by us again (Oh, no!). Mel was asked about the bushes that are the 100 yard, 150 yard and 200 yard makers. The question was do you still get relief without penalty. Answer – yes.
News Editor – Don Russell gave another scintillating no report.
Director at Large (the not so large one) – Mike Marmer described the Putting Contest format as partners alternate putt and announce that there was a five way tie for second (too numerous to mention names here) and that the first place team was Ed Fernandez and Dick Reagan. Next on Mike’s agenda was to announce the Golfers of the Month, gross and net. Paul Wildy submitted the lowest score, a fine 70 for the gross GOM. I didn’t know he was that good! John Davis failed in his attempt to go ‘Pig” but shot a fine 73 with a 10 handicap to capture the net GOM trophy with a net 63. As I am a member of the handicap committee, I am sure both Paul and JD will be on our next committee meeting agenda.
With the power of the gavel, Tom Link chose this time to announce the El Dorado Cup. This event is played over a four month period – August through November. It is a single elimination match play event. Players are flighted by handicap and have the responsibility of scheduling their own matches. This is a great way to meet new people and an opportunity for new members to get involved.
Director at Large (the large one) – Dennis Tramer announced that he would be running a chipping/putting contest during the Member-Member Friday night revelry. Like tonight’s putting contest, it will be a partners alternate shot. Dennis then announced the winners of the 9 hole tournament. Tom Link, Terry Henson and Dennis (never win your own event) Tramer tied for second place and the winner was Tony Jimenez.
President Link then made yet another announcement. Those interested in the Father’s Day Tournament, see Jerry Leininger to sign up. There is no format but it gives you a chance to play with your kids, your dad, other relatives or friends. You can also play with your wife or girl friend (but not both). If you get a tee time for Father’s Day and cannot make it, you must cancel 72 hours or more in advance. If you do not, the club is obligated to pay the golf course for the greens fees and that means you are obligated to reimburse the club. Bottom line, cancel in time or pay anyway.
Tournament Chairman – Rich Dennison announced that the Member-Member was full and tee times would run from 5:30AM to 12:30PM each day. The tournament would be played from the blue tees both days with a format of Partner Better Ball on Saturday and Aggregate (count ‘em all) on Sunday. Rich reiterated that the tournament would be played at Low Index or Tournament Index, which ever is lower. He also underscored Tom Link’s comments about 72 hour cancellation on the Father’s Day Event. The June 12th Tournament will be a 4 club affair (and you can’t use your partner’s clubs) with a format that Rich wasn’t to sure of but was probably 2 balls on the par 4s, 3 balls on the par 3s and 4 balls on the par 5s but subject to adjustment. Rich then called the first 10 names for the June Tournament Lottery.
General Manager Mez White arrived late but just in time to announce the winners of the Derby (I already knew that Tom Conlisk and partner were the first ones off the course so they didn’t cash). First place went to George Manyak and the afore mentioned Dennis (an honest golfer never has a chance) Tramer. Mez told us that tree trimming was about to begin and at least 150 trees would get a haircut. Also, the driving range was to be enclosed on the far end. Mez then announced that our superintendent, Jack Glant was leaving to rescue Los Verdes. Jack has done and outstanding job in the last several years making El Dorado one of the best conditioned golf courses in southern California. Thanks, Jack for a job well done.
Past president Bob Livingstone moved that the club express it’s feelings in a letter of thanks to Jack. The motion was seconded and passed unanimously with a voice vote.
Old Business - None
New Business - None
Meeting adjourned
More raffle tickets were sold and Rick Evans conducted the raffle with the help of Bob Livingstone and the irrepressible Don Russell
The 50-50 was $86 with half of the pot going to Tim Yee and the other half to Junior Golf.
The membership drawing was for $80. Mike Pircher was not in attendance so the drawing will be for $90 in June.
Respectfully submitted,

What a weekend! Starting off with Friday nites chipping and putting contest, put on by Mr. Tramer, great job DT, everyone had a good time, and I thank you for the hard work you put into it. Inside the tent we had Marie with her cocktails and hors d’oeuvres along with Mr. Shure taking information on who will win the Tournament as usual Steve did a great job. Saturday morning came early and the course played tough. Hole 12 gave up an ace to Mike ( Spanky) Hasselman, The hole in 1 fund had over $700 in it, the way he was buying drinks he needed the money, Spanky and his partner John Hasselman won the Sat Gross Sweeps, but couldn’t hold on to the over all win of the gross, Maybe to much celebrating?
The winners of the Gross Flight were Bob Forester and Steve Pircher on a tough course for two days, Congratulations. The A-Flight winners, the team of Dave Hasselman and Doug Lee shot a 203, my understanding is that Dave just plodded along and rode Doug like Seabiscuit. It looks like Doug will learn about Tournament Handicaps. The B-Flight was won by the team of Terry Sweet and Gary McIsac with a score of 208 I know that Mr. Cash McIsac will enjoy the payoff, great job guys it’s hard to keep it together for two days. In the C-Flight the winners were Stan Farris and Gene Scott with a score of 201. It looks like Stan has found a new partner, congratulations on a fine win on a tough course. I would like to thank all the board of Directors for all the hard work they put into the Tournament, with out them it couldn’t be done. Special thanks to Jerry Leininger for his generous donations and to Donna Yeager for her work at the table. I also want to thank Dave Dvorchak for his help at the table and on the course; it’s always nice to see Dee at the course.
The June Tournament is going to be a four club Tournament. Team format. Count two balls on par Threes, Three balls on par Fours, and Four balls on par Fives You can not use each others clubs; you have to use the four you brought only. We will play to our full Handicap from the white tees. I have openings for groups and singles call and leave a message if you want in 562-822-2659 or dennison5338@aol.com
The Fathers day tee times are your responsibility Remember if you had signed up for one and you have to cancel, you must do so with in 72 hours of that time
The Member – Guest is July 17th so start thinking about a guest now, the tournament fee will be $75 the sign up deadline is July 13th.

Well I would like to start out by thanking everyone that supported me for another term as your Golf Commissioner. This months meeting was very quick and simple. The Legends project is well ahead of schedule. As I mentioned last month the club house renovation will not be complete when the course opens October 1st. Very likely that portion will be completed by hopefully November 1st?? The city has reviewed the proposal from American Golf regarding the fees. They will present a written proposal to the Commission next month. At that point the fees and charges committee will review and present to Commission I assume in August, because we do not meet in July. I will keep you posted. The rounds for the month continue to show improvement. Our course was up 11.13% for the month, and plus 8.83% for the year. Combined the courses were up 11.77% for the month and plus 5.84% for the year. The revenue generated by the courses is still very strong, with over 450 grand generated during the month. The junior program is also during very well with over 71 thousand in that account. There were 3 nominees approved for our Hall of Fame. Obviously I cannot reveal their names, but you can find out who they are by attending the closing ceremony at the Long Beach Open. A couple of projects under way at our course. The tree trimming is about two thirds completed. The ball dispenser will be enclosed very soon. It will remain in the same spot. They are also going to start putting yardage markers on the irrigation heads. They will start at 250 yards out and work down from there. Well like I mentioned the meeting was short and sweet, just like this article. See you at the next meeting.

Congrats to Mike Hasselman for recording the first Hole-In-One in a Men's Club event in quite awhile. Spanky's ball found the hole on #12 in the first round of the Member-Member. Had he not honored family ties and partnered with a good player instead of his cousin John, he could have been a real hero for the weekend! Mike cut into his over $700 winnings a little bit on Saturday afternoon, and will host a keg of beer at the June General Meeting for those who weren't around on the Happy Day...be early as we have a few members who may just partake of this nectar.
I will be taking sign ups for the new Hole-In-One Fund until such time as we again make a payout. The cost is $3, and you may sign up at a meeting, a monthly tournament or by dropping an envelope with $3 in the Men's Club Drawer (this last option is the least desirable, but is acceptable). Payouts are for aces made during a regularly scheduled monthly Men's Club Tournament only (i.e. not Team Play, Away Trips or 9-Hole Tourneys). If you have any questions, please give me a call.

Past President
President's Corner
Congratulations to all of us that played in this years 4 club tournament, it was a lot of fun and one of the quickest rounds of golf that I have finished in a men’s club event this year. We did not have much to “think” about before hitting our next shot and the speed of play was much quicker. Hmm, maybe we should “think” about that.
Our next event is the Member-Guest Tournament on Saturday July 17th, if you have not sent in an entry there is a form on the internet or you can drop a envelope with you name and guests name in the men’s club box at the course. We do not have an away trip planned this month but we will be going to the SCPGA Champions course on August 7th. Contact Nick Zamora if you are interested in going.
We will hold the drawing for the Long Beach Open at our July meeting and you will have one last opportunity to purchase tickets, there will be three tickets given away.
Our August Tournament is the Partner Partner. This is a really fun event with four different formats. It is truly a “partner” event so pick your mate wisely. Fill out the form in the newsletter or show up at the July meeting and get your entry in early, this will fill up quickly.
Our weekender is October 8 – 10 at Singing Hills, one of my favorites. See Nick Zamora to sign up. This is a fun trip and will fill up soon.
Hope to see all of you at the meeting in July.
Tom Link
President
The monthly meeting was held June 8, 2004 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent. The restaurant provided spaghetti and meatballs with Italian sausage tonight for your nominal donation of $6. President Tom Link called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. and led the membership in allegiance to our flag.
Past Presidents in attendance: Richard Scoville, Ray McElhenney, Mike Montgomery, Greg O’Brien, and Bob Livingstone.
Bob Livingstone, Fred Gibson represented our life membership.
The minutes from the last meeting and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.
There were no new members at tonight’s meeting.
Pres. Link opened that Mike “Spanky” Hasselman won 738 units with his hole-in-one at he last monthly tournament. It is possible that Spanky will have a keg of beer set up for the membership at the July meeting so be sure to mark your calendar. See Bob Livingstone is you have yet gotten your new insurance coverage.
Mez White, Pro Shop, noted we have a new Superintendent to start this week. He comes from Pennsylvania. Getting sand in the bunkers is one of Mez’s priorities. Mel Collins commented that we need a round rake. This would allow him to take care of the bunkers on hole #3 during our tournaments.
Committee Reports:
Ray McElhenney – Golf Commissioner: Nothing new to comment on. Skylinks is on track for reopening.
Pres. Link noted that Larry Grant and Robert Forster have both qualified for the Senior Amateur. This will be a match play contest. Mez White interjected that Roman Gonzales, Pro Shop, qualified for the Amateur event.
Jerry Leininger – Handicap Chairman: Jerry Hodge and Tom McCutcheon have joined Mr. Leininger, Don Russell, and Dick Scoville as part of the H/C committee. If you have anything you want to suggest to be looked at please be sure to submit the thought to our committee.
Nick Zamora – Entertainment: We just played Oak Quarry. It was a lot of fun on a beautiful layout. Course played sort of tight with a lot of lateral hazards. On Saturday August 7 we are set to play PGA So. California, at Oak Valley (Beaumont). We have 60 spots on this higher end course. Be sure to sign up so you don’t miss this one. Format will be 1 on par 5, 2 on par 4, and 3 on par 3. This year’s weekender, at Singing Hills, is October 8, 9, and 10. Be sure to sign up for this as it typically fills fast.
Mel Collins – Rules: Commented on a situation with hitting a ball OB from a bunker and raking the sand before dropping to re-hit, is a penalty to be assessed. The answer was that this was legal and no penalty applies.
Don Russell – News Editor: Don had nothing to comment upon.
Mike Marmer – Director: The winner of tonight’s putting contest won with only taking one trip around the course. Dennis Tramer collected an easy $30 for this journey. 2nd place was a tie between Mez White and Bill “Action” Jackson. The collected $16 each. Several G.O.M. cards were submitted for May. Three members shot net 65, but Tony Jimenez shot an 85 – 21 from the blue tees to win with a 64. Gross was also closely contested. A 2004 new member, Sam Vance, had a 68 with a 32 on the backside, but John Tamney edged him out with a 67.
Dennis Tramer – Director: Not many participated in tonight’s 9-hole tournament today (Laker’s game). Tied for 3rd were Tom Link and Tim Yee, $10 each. 2nd went to David Pemberton, $20. Tonight’s winner was Vern Herzberg who collected a quick $30. Dennis noted that the El Dorado Cup is now referred to as El Dorado Match Play Championship. There will be 16 people in each flight set in brackets like the NCAA basketball March Madness. One round is played each month beginning in August. You’ll play your first round and the winners move on until we have the championship rounds. Cost to enter the tournament is $10. You will be playing to your current Low Index. If it goes up or down you will adjust to the new number.
Rich Dennison – Tournaments: The Member-Member tournament went well. Rich thanked everyone who participated and those who worked the tournament and to prepare for it. This weekend we’ll have the 4-club tourney. Format to take 2 on par 3, 3 on par 4, and 4 on par 5 holes. He still has single openings available. If you want to play give Rich a call. We have a block of times for Father’s Day. We are responsible for filling these times. If you take a time, be sure to fill your tee slot with at least 4 players or the Pro Shop will be placing people from the stand by list in your group. Our Member-Guest is in July. If your guest has an index number it helps. Once again it is OK to bring a woman to play, if that is your choice. If enough women get into the tournament Rich will consider a special flight. Tees will be near the white markers. Cost is $75 per team
Old Business: None
New Business: Mike Vaughn advised the membership that Bill Cooper, El Dorado Pro Shop, has asked that if we intend to swap merchandise won at the meeting back in to the Pro Shop to kindly do so within the month before the next meeting. The Pro Shop changes some of the merchandise the carry from time to time and items that were given out months before may not be current items the ‘Shop carries. The Prop Shop always does what they can to support our Club. Let us be courteous and redeem these items is a timely manner.
Meeting adjourned.
More raffle tickets were sold. Don Russell drew the tickets while Pat Nohalty handed out the prizes. As always, we gave away a lot of prizes that included cash, golf equipment, shirts, golf balls, range cards, and more.
50-50 was $72 tonight. The winner was Tim Yee. That was a quick $36 for Tom and $36 for Jr. Golf.
The membership drawing tonight was for $90. The number of Michael Conching was drawn. Michael was not at the meeting. The prize will increase to $100 next month.

Finally! It took 6 months to cash, but I’ve done it. Ok I know it was a tournament where you only get to use 4 clubs, but you know; some times you need to keep it simple to do well. I noticed by the score cards that some players had really good scores and some who didn’t have very good scores. I heard from some they like the format, and from others the format sucks, anyway you put it, it was a fine day for golf.
The gross flight was won by Terrell Powell, Dan Holley, Eric Burke, Bill Hunt and Alex Gay, there were several gross teams close this month, congratulations on a good win.
A-Flight was won on a card off by Paul Hoch Fred Gerlach Fredrick Gerlach, Bob Blanchard and a well picked blind draw, now there’s some luck, 4 clubs, 4 players and a great pick.
B-Flight was hotly contested by 3 teams all with 199, the team of Mike Hasselman, Brian O’Malley, Bob Williford, Scott Royal and Joe Escoboza won the card off.
C-Flight also had to go to a card off, the team of Larry Bartley, Lance Lomax,
Jim Crosby, Jerry Leininger and Rich Dennison.
I would like to thank Mike Montgomery for running the 1st tee every month he does a great job getting the groups moving, it’s a big reason we are on time.
We had a great turn out for Fathers day with tee times from 6:30 to 11:00 and I’m sure every one had a great time. There was a mix up with management as to when our 1st tee time was and what rates to charge, I’m told that there were a few members yelling at the pro shop workers, remember they are only doing as they are told, please come and see a Director if you have a problem, it will save a lot of grief for everyone.
The July 17th Member Guest tournament has openings, see me before the July general meeting and get a time.
In August we have our 2 day Partner-Partner this one is a lot of fun, the first day we play, front nine a Cross Over, the back nine Alternate shot. The second day, front nine Partners Better Ball, back nine Aggregate. Line up a partner now this one will fill up.

Well we met one week earlier this month. I will cover the usual topics then get to the real "meat and potatoes"!!! The rounds of golf for all the courses dipped just a little this month. Down .03%. Our course was up at 3.04%. The year to date totals are still on the plus side. All courses being up 4.49% and El Dorado up 9.64%. The revenue generated by all the courses is outstanding. Over 518 Thousand for the month of May. 295 grand going to the City!!.
Our restaurant will be getting a bit of a face lift. Some painting will take place. The Salad Bar area will be taking on a new look. I do not know the exact time frame, but it will be funded by Jim Choura. The tree trimming is about done, and the ball enclosure is also underway. If you have seen some standing water with mosquitoes around, please notify American Golf so the problem can be addressed. That goes for any dead birds you might see also. The Mens club playing hours are in line. The yardage markers hopefully will be completed by the time the golf festival arrives. Junior Golf Funds are very much alive and well. Over 72 Thousand in that account. Dempsey's Pub held a charity Tournament and raised over 1,500 for Jr. golf. Not bad!! Some of the rough in front of some of our tee boxes will be cut back. Apparently there were a couple of areas that extended about 100 yards from the tee to the fairway.
The Legends Project is very well under way and is actually ahead of schedule. By the way the Commission recommended that the new course keep the name Skylinks, and that appears to be what the City wanted all along. So Skylinks will be the name. Well we were presented the proposal for the fees by American Golf at our meeting. Before I get to any specifics I will advise you that this is a proposal and the Commission will meet several times before August when our recommendations go to the City. Keeping in mind the City has the final word. Let me start by saying I will not put every item in this report, but just the major areas. Recreation Park Weekday Resident is now $18.00, proposal $19.50, that is 18 holes. 9 holes, Weekday is at 11.00 for resident, proposal $12.00. Non resident is $24.00 and $13.00. Proposal is for $25.50 and $14.00. Weekend 18 is at $22.00 Proposal $23.50. Non resident is $29.00 proposal is $31.00. For our course. Weekday 18 is at $22.00 proposal for $23.50 this for residents. Non Residents is at $29.00 proposal $31.00. Weekend rate for resident is at $26.00 proposal $28.00. Non resident is at $34.00 proposal $36.00. Again there are proposals for across the board with the average being about $2.00 dollars per category. Cart fees will be increased by a dollar if proposal is accepted. Reservation Card Charges are being asked to be increased by $5.00. And they are asking to Eliminate the Resident Senior monthly card, as well as the resident 12 play card.
Regarding Skylinks the proposals are as follows. Weekday resident 18, $35.00, non resident $45.00. Weekend resident rate $45.00 and non-resident $55.00. Again these are the two major areas. I have all the details on all the areas but I can't put them in this article, it would be to much. If someone wants these items I can make some copies and put them in our Pro Shop. Keep in mind that these meetings are open to the public and if you would like to come and give us you opinion, then please do so. Enough for now.

I would like to thank everyone who supported the Long Beach Open; the turnout by the El Dorado Men’s Club was fantastic. Some supported by buying raffle tickets, filling divots, volunteering or just coming down to watch. Ken Louie kept his “Raffle” streak in tack by winning again this year (how many is that?) The other two winners were Bob Breen and Darry Bush. El Dorado Men’s Club was well represented in the field and four of the teams cashed. 1st Place Gross, 1st Place Net and 3rd and 4th place net. It seemed like we were at one of our Men’s Club tournaments.

The monthly meeting was held July 13, 2004 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent. The restaurant provided beef ribs, chicken breasts, rice, and baked beans tonight for your nominal donation of $6. Members had their last chance to purchase raffle tickets to participate in the Long Beach Pro-Am. The drawing for three players will be held tonight. Bob Livingstone, Fred Gibson once again represented our life membership.
The minutes from the last meeting and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.
Pres. Link wanted to recognize our members who have been playing in the tournaments outside of our Club. Mel Collins finished 3rd in the U.S. Senior, while Larry Grant and Bob Forster both played in the Amateur Seniors. American Golf has Jay Carballo here tonight to discuss current conditions, while Mez White noted they are doing all they can to get it the course in proper condition before the LB Open. Our greens are sandy now and getting lots of water. Mez claims they are getting better every day. Jay noted that they are trying to get the roots to go deeper in the soil. This is a long-term effort. Crows have been a problem. This is being addressed. Jay thanked us for having him attend the meeting. Pres. Link thanked him for being our guest.
There were (3) new members at tonight’s meeting. They went with Bob Livingstone for the informative tour.
Committee Reports:
Ray McElhenney – Golf Commissioner: Skylinks is set to open October 1. The Commissioners were just invited to a walk through. Ray pointed out that proposals are in approval for rate increases. They are meeting again Monday July 26 at 6:30 p.m. at Rec. Park. These meetings are open to everyone. Anyone who would like to voice a concern is guaranteed 2 minutes to do so.
Rick Evans – Special Events: Some members are playing without a guest this Saturday, but they can participate in Special Events. Be sure that whoever turns in the scorecards notes any birdies or eagles. Rick then told a joke about a fairy tale.
Jerry Leininger – Handicap Chairman: The committee is still reviewing the process we currently use. See any of them if you have a concern. Next month more will follow.
Nick Zamora – Entertainment: August 7 we play the So. California PGA course for the Championship tees (Blue markers). The cost of $85 is a great deal. Nick will be leaving the state for 2 weeks on the next Monday so Dennis Tramer will be doing the tourney payoffs and taking signups for the Weekender. We will be going back to the old boring format that the Weekender had before Nick became Entertainment Director (Nick bowed to the pressure. Yours truly would have never thought that would happen, as his format was a good change. Everyone had to play golf their’ best golf for the whole round. Isn’t that what we’re there for?).
Mel Collins – Rules: Discussed a situation about a ball falling off of the tee while swinging at a ball with intent to strike the ball. The player picked the ball up and re-teed. What is the penalty? A lot of discussion followed.
Don Russell – News Editor: Don had nothing to comment upon.
Mike Marmer – Director: Putting Contest – Lynn Watkins won the event at 3 under for $36, and four tied for 2nd place (Todd Thiele, Larry Grant, Mel Collins, and Greg Lester) for $10 each. There was a lot of participation in the G.O.M. last month. Gene Scott’s net 71 started the long list of also ran. Steve Shure took top honors with a fine 77 – 13 for a 64. The gross field also had several also ran. Ted Burrows claimed the top prize with a 67. Mike noted Ted took a bogey on 18 when he attempted to hit a 5-Iron into 18 for his second shot and ended up in the lake.
Dennis Tramer – Director: Flights tournament is fast approaching. He needs 6 more players to complete the 64-player field. We will play to our current L.I. Entry fee is $10. Tonight’s 9-hole tourney had 20 players. 3rd place and $20 with a 34 ½ went to Mike Morrison, 2nd place and $30 for a 33 ½ to David Pemberton, and 1st place and $50 for a 33 went to Tom Link.
Rich Dennison – Tournaments: The Member-Guest is full. We have almost 100 teams this year. Rich will work to squeeze everyone in. Format will be Better Ball on the front and Aggregate on the back. 99 was the winning score last year. Rich noted that the Partner-Partner will fill up fast and recommends everyone to sign up early. We will have four different formats for this 36-hole event. The September tourney will have a prize raffle, with a lot of prizes. Cost will be $50 per player. There will be a Bar-B-Q and outside bar. The tourney will play off of split tees.
Old Business: Bob Livingstone discussed the Hole-In-One fund. See him if you have not re-insured. Elections of Board of Directors will take place n November. We will announce the Board’s selection of candidates in September, take nominations from the floor in October, and hold the elections at the November General Meeting.
New Business: Raffle for L.B. Open was held. Don Marmion pulled the tickets for our three winners. The lucky winners were Bob Breen, Ken Louie, and Darry Bush. Bob, Ken, and Darry will be teamed up with a pro. Good luck guys!

The weather was hot, the rough was up, the course was playing tuff, the scores were up, the company was outstanding and I think everyone had a good time. I guess it takes a member guest tournament to have some new names in the winners circle, I want to thank everyone who played in this years Member-Guest, It was a huge success with 91 teams showing up. Gross was won by John Hasselman and Steve Coffey with a score of 111.
In the A-flight the team of Steve Shure and Craig Thomas won with a score of 100. The B-Flight winners are Richard Scoville and Richard Geismar with a score of 103.
In the C-Flight Al Kuroda and Eric Holmes won with a very impressive 100.

The back nine is an alternate shot; you decide who will tee off on the even holes and who tees off on the odd number holes
Alternate shot till hole is completed. Sunday front nine partners better ball, back nine aggregate (count them all). I will be taking signups at the August 10th meeting if there are any times left.

JD also thanked Jim Baber for the two years as his co-captain. Clipboard will be in the hallway for sign up. JD will call the first 48. The same criterion used for qualifying the last two years will be used.
Pres. Link then introduced Roger Scaife as out Thursday team captain. Roger expects the team to do very well this year. His co-captain will be Larry Lipman.
There was no Commission meeting this month. Skylinks is still set to open October 1.
Mike Vaughn noted to the membership that SCGA has established new guidelines and set new dates for 2005 renewals. Members need to have their renewals turned in NLT November 1. All Clubs are to have their 2005 roster submitted to them no later than November 15. This will establish our January, 2005 SCGA member roster. Any 2004 member not on this roster will not be able to post scores as of January 1, as well as not be eligible for Team Play and other SCGA events that require one-year continuous membership. Those same persons will not be receiving the January Fore magazine and their’ 2005 membership card. Be sure to have your renewals in before November 1st. Mike added, 2005 renewal cards for email newsletter recipients will be available at this week’s tournament, and mailed next week to those who did not get one this weekend.
Committee Reports:
Rick Evans – Special Events: Rick noted that Mike Marmer is to run Sweeps this weekend. There will be a Sweep for each set of 9-holes at $5 per player, plus $5 Special Events per player each day. Be sure to note birdies to the tournament table when you submit your scorecard. We will have a raffle at the September tourney. You do not have to be present to win. The Saturday tournament is not part of this year’s Club Championship. We will be playing split tees.
Jerry Leininger – Handicap Chairman: The Handicap Committee proposed a plan to the Board of Directors that was not accepted. They will be reviewing the options at hand preparing a new plan. If you have any suggestions be sure to see Jerry or any of the H/C Committee members. This Saturday is not a postable score, but Sunday will be posted as a Tournament round.
Dennis Tramer – Director: Dennis noted that next month the 9-hole tournament will be played from the white rocks. Winners today were 3rd place Tony Jimenez, 2nd place Ruben Gonzales, and the winner Bob Breen. Dennis then covered the Away events for Nick Zamora who is out of state. This year’s weekender will be at Singing Hills October 8 – 10. The 8th is optional if you want to play. $100 deposit is due ASAP, with the balance due at the course. We have regressed back to the old format. Last Saturday we played at the PGA course in Beaumont. The weather was not all that hot. Dennis then handed out the prize special event and position prize monies.
Mel Collins – Rules: Mel discussed the ruling that is applied if you have picked your ball from off of the green and then accidentally drop it and it hits your bag and goes into the water and can not be found. It is treated as a lost ball.
Mike Marmer – Director: Putting Contest – No Gross cards were submitted this month. (2) Net cards were from Mike Gilmore (77 – 10 = 67), and Don Marmion (77 –13 = 64). Don is this month’s winner. The Putting Contest had a lot of winners who tied with the best score. As for the Sweeps this weekend you can enter either day, both, or none, your choice.
Rich Dennison – Tournaments: Saturday we will be crossing over one the front nine then playing alternate shot on the back. September we’ll be back to having a raffle. The format will be 2 scores on the par 3, 3 scores on par 4, and 4 scores on the par 5 holes, starting on both the 1st and 10th holes in a split tee formation. Speed of play is important. Be sure to keep up with the team in front of you, do not lose sight. Prizes will be awarded after the tournament. Lots of merchandise and cash. We will give away everything that we take in from ticket sales. There will be a stand by list if you don’t get at time tonight. Rich called the first 10 names for persons to get their’ times following the end of the meeting.
Old Business: None
New Business: The sprinkler heads have been marked to the distance to the center of the green. The club agreed earlier in the year that this would be a good addition and that we would contribute a portion of the cost. It appears this cost will be approximately $1,000. Cairo Piercy noted these sprinklers need to be groomed, as finding them is almost very difficult as they are over grown with grass. Tom Bentele wants to have a name for our Club, such as El Dorado Bandits. Pres. Link asked Tom if he would like to form a committee for this concern. Lastly, be sure to be at the course on time Saturday as no public is going out in front of us this weekend.
Meeting adjourned.

Well Gentlemen after a month off from my duties as your Commissioner I got back in the saddle a few days ago. Some basic information to pass along and then on to the fees recommendations. I will give you some numbers for both June and July. During June the rounds for all the courses were down 1%. The year to date % was up by 3.43%. For June El Dorado was down 1.87%. Yearly % was up 8.03%. Revenue generated was still very positive, with over 1.2 million. July rounds for all the course was down by 2.56%. The year to date numbers were up by 2.46%. El dorado for July was down 6.66%, with the open and other events being played at our course that % is expected. For the yearly % we were up 5.61%. Again generated was over 1.1 million.
Nothing to report on the C.P.I. funds. Junior Golf has over 73 thousand in that "KITTY". The club hours are in line. Skylinks is still on schedule. The club house renovation has seen some set backs, and as I have stated prior, that will not be ready for the opening day. If you did not know Mez White is on a medical leave and is expected back at the end of September. For now Jay Caballo is looking over our courses operations. As I stated in my last article American Golf sent a proposal to the City as well as to the Commission. We have had several public meetings, as well as some committee meetings. The recommendation to the City is as follows. All courses convert back to a single pricing structure. All courses will be priced at the current fee structure of El Dorado. The green fees will be increased on 10/01/2004 based on the CPI of 5.37%. All the other programs such as the senior and junior fees are to remain the same. No increase to any of the other proposed by American Golf, such as cart fees, photo fees, range fees etc. There is also an alternative plan and that being a 3 tier situation, but that is only there as a possible back up. Keep in mind we recommend to the City. They will have the final word. Whatever the decision is the fees have to be posted 2 weeks prior to 10/01/2004. That should just about do it for this edition???!!! See you at our general meeting.

As a reminder, elections for the 2005 Board of Directors will take place at the November General Meeting. In October, nominations will be accepted by anyone at the General Meeting. At the September Meeting, the names of those members who have expressed interest in running for an office will be presented by Greg O’Brien, as I will be returning from a trip to Oregon that day.
If you are interested in running for a position on the Board (elective offices are President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and two Directors at Large) please contact Bob Livingstone as soon as possible.

President's Corner
Congratulations to our new Club Champion John Dymon, the competition was very close with many players having a shot on the last day. John shot a very consistent total of 221, 5 over par. A very close second was Mike Hasselman with a 222 Total. How many of us can think of one shot we would like to have back in a three day event. Nice job Mike, better luck next year! We had a tie for the Senior Club Championship with Mel Collins winning a playoff over Steve Friend. Congrats to all that entered this year, I hope to see more participation next year.
October brings us back to the Dreaded Orange Ball Tournament! Lots of fun, make sure that you get your team together and enter. See Rich Dennison for the particulars.
Skylinks GC is due to open for play October 29th, which should relieve some of the play at El Dorado. We have not been informed as to what the green fees will be; hope to have that information at the October meeting.
October is the month that our Nominating Committee takes nominations from the floor. These names will be added to the current slate of candidates. If you are interested in running for an office, please get someone to put your name in nomination at the General Meeting. If you are interested in serving on the Board please see me or talk to someone on the Board about how you can get involved. We need active members to keep our Club strong, we encourage you to get involved. See you at the meeting

President Tom Link called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and led the membership in allegiance to our flag.
Past Presidents in attendance: Richard Scoville, Steve Shure, Don Marmion, Ray McElhenney, Mike Montgomery, and Greg O’Brien.
Tom Burris, Bob Livingstone, Fred Gibson represented our life membership.
The minutes from the last meeting and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.

Qualifying starts Saturday October 2 at 7:30. J.D will contact players as well as posted times on the website. J.D reminded players to be sure to get their due renewals made on time.
Roger Scaife gave a short update on the Thursday team.
Tom McCutcheon made know that the USGA is having a Senior Amateur at Bel Air October 9 –15. He is in receipt of a letter USGA has sent asking for volunteers. Bob Forster has been selected as an alternate. Volunteers will mostly be helping around the clubhouse. $25 gets you a shirt and hat. See Tom if you are interested.
Committee Reports:
Ray McElhenney – Gold Commission: The big-ticket item now is the fees that will be charged at the Long Beach courses. The Commission came back with the rates they have proposed. Nothing is defined and set in stone. Ray expects the increase to only be a couple of bucks (5.3%). The city will be posting what has been decided in the next few days. Ray expects Skylinks to be higher than here or at Rec Park. Steve Shure noted the conditions here are worse than they’ve been for years. The last few times it has been brought up that they aren’t keeping the course up to standard they’ve replied “It’ll get better”. Steve went on to suggest they rebate us a price as they were going to keep our course at a better condition. Steve also questioned if they are holding up to our agreement of care. Ray has and will continue to fight for this effort. The course is still set to open October 1.
Rick Evans – Special Events: Rick noted the September raffle is going to be huge. This Saturday we have the tourney, Bar-B-Q, and raffle. Mike Montgomery sold over $1,000 in tickets tonight. Tickets are $5 each, 5 for $20, or 7 for $25. You do not have to be present to win. Rick reminded everyone to inform the tournament table of birdies and eagles at the end of their’ round.
Nick Zamora – Entertainment: Noted that he missed the August meeting and thanked Dennis Tramer for covering for him. The weekender is October 8 – 10 at Singing Hills. Let him know if you are playing all 3-days. $75 entry for the SCGA Member’s course in November. Nick is taking signups for this tournament. Plans for next year have been made, and will advise on them at a later date.
Mel Collins – Rules: Mel discussed the ruling to be made on a ball in a depression on the fairway from a player swinging at the ball and it becoming embedded in the ground a matter of two-feet in front of its’ originally lie. The item that determines if this is free relief is whether the ball got airborne. A lot of thoughts followed this. Tom McCutcheon is going to look this up and advise.
Mike Marmer – Director: G.O.M. and Putting Contest – Tonight was a good putting tournament. Mike raised the stakes to $2 per round. We had a 5-way tie for second place (Terry Henson, Dennis Tramer, Steve Giroux, Larry Grant, and Greg Englant) for $20 each. The winner was Mike Marmer. Better turnout for G.O.M. this month. Net winner was Brad Wilcox (76-11=65), and Gross went to Mel Collins shooting a 69. Lastly, “Sweeps” money is in the “money box” so be sure to collect anything you’ve won.
Dennis Tramer – Director: Dennis noted that Flights are moving right along. The competition is good. Dennis is looking to get 80 players into this tourney next year (another flight). Your second round must be completed NLT Sunday October 3. Call Dennis if you are having any problems in scheduling your match. Tonight’s 9-Hole tourney was played from the white tees today. Bob Breen and Tom Baker tied to take 2nd and 3rd, while Terry Fulford took top honors with a net 32.
Rich Dennison – Tournaments: Starting times this Saturday from split-tees will be from 6:25 to 8:51. Rich wants all groups to play their’ front 9 in 2:15. Be sure to stay with the group in front of you. Do not lose pace. You are to move on whenever you can by stealing minutes when it becomes available. Bottom line is we must play in less than 5 hours. The first person checking in at the tournament table will get packages of tickets; raffle ticket for each player, and tickets for a sandwich and a drink. We will be having the raffle in the restaurant. If you can’t be at the raffle and win a prize we will call you once. October 15 is the Orange ball tournament. Saturday’s format is 2 on par 3, 3 on par 4, and 4 on par 5, with three net flights and one gross.
Pres. Link discussed the flyers that are on each table requesting we pay $1,200 of the $3,600 expenditure for sprinkler head markings. American Golf asked us to pay half ($1,800). Bill Johnson asked how they came up with us paying half. Pres. Link replied that Rec Park split the cost for the markings over there. Steve Liebeck made motion that we don’t pay until they get the course into better condition. Dick Reagan seconded the motion. Pres. Link noted that this is not the course we are taking. Reagan then asked what the count of the BOD vote was and Tom replied it was based on a majority, but didn’t give a ratio. The majority of the Club at the meeting voted to pay the $1,200 (one-third total cost). Steve Shure commented that many years ago they marked the course but when markings came loose and fell of that they were never replaced, and that if this is the intention we do not want to spend our money on it. Pres. Link will inform them that we need a condition of care and upkeep. Pat Nohalty asked for a copy of the letter to be sent to the membership. Tom replied that he would post it on our website.
10 names were called for October signup.

The winners of the Gross Flight this month are the same as last month, the other gross players of this club better get out and practice because Mel Collins, Greg Lester, Doug Jones, Kevin Orr and Bob Forester are running away with all the wins.
In the A Flight we have a new group of winners, Darrell Blore, Bob McCrea, Bill McCrea and Mike Supple it’s nice to see new names in the newsletter.
The B Flight was won by Dennis Tramer Greg O’Brien, Jeff O’Brien, Bill Henigsman and Blind Draw. I’m sure Tramer will be looking for Mr. Draw to play in his group in the future.
The C Flight was won by Stan Farris, Bill Jackson, Gene Scott, Paul Djukich and Ken Louie. This group is getting to be regulars in the winners circle, This Month they only won by 1 stroke, so were getting closer maybe next month we can knock them off.
The Dreaded Orange Ball Tournament on October 16th has only a few single openings left, call and get and get on the list. We just got a new batch of hard orange balls so there will be plenty to go around.
In November we have our Individual Stableford Tournament so be sure to come to the October 12th meeting to sign up as a group or an Individual.
December 18th is our Shotgun Christmas Tournament it will cost $51 to walk and $63 to have a cart, there is only 180 spots available so hurry and get your sign up slip in. Remember you have had to have played in at least 3 tournaments (at home or away) to play in it, so if you have only played in 1 or 2 tournaments, Oct. & Nov. are important.

Well gentlemen we have pushed another month behind us. Just completed our monthly Commissioners meeting. Nothing real special going on but I will give you a few updates. Regarding the rounds of golf played in September for all the courses, we were down by 1%. Year to date play is up 2%. For El Dorado during September the rounds were up .64%. Year to date we are up 4.92%. C.I.P. funds are at 431 thousand. The Junior Golf funds total 74 thousand. The revenue generated for the City in September was over 294 thousand!!!.
A little information on the water coolers. It came to the attention of American Golf and the City that these coolers had to be basically washed every single day due to health regulations. So the restaurant has taken the responsibility of getting the coolers cleaned each evening and putting them back the following morning. Let see how that will work. If you notice that they are still missing, bring it to my attention so I can follow up.
This year I will be on 4 different sub committees, C.I.P., Jr Golf, tournaments, and Hall of Fame. As you are aware Mez White is on a leave of absence, he is supposed to return October 1st. In the mean time Brett Skinner is filling in for Mez.
Skylinks opening day was set back until the 29th of October. The main reasons were the construction of the club house basically has the parking areas blocked, and Edison was unable to get power to the course!!!. On the 29th the Pro Shop will be open, but the Club House will not be open. Finally a word or ten regarding the fees proposals. The proposal from American Golf, the proposal from the Commission and the one from the City will be discussed this Friday the 24th of September. Hopefully the City Manager can and will give us his decision that day??? As soon as I hear something I will let you know. Well that will do it for this go around.

We were sailing along quite well until it was my turn to use the “Dreaded Orange Ball” on hole # 17. I stood on the tee, full of confidence, and promptly “sliced” the ball into the trap at the front of the 10th hole. The worst part was up the fairway came Tom Conlisk and Paul Wildy asking what I was doing over here. I am certain I will be reminded of this shot for years. Every year there are stories about the of things that happen in this Tournament with that dreaded thing, if you missed it you should make sure you are able to play next year.
We have just one away trip left this year, to the SCGA course in Temecula on November 7th. If you get this Newsletter before that date and are interested call Nick Zamora to see if there is a spot available.
Rich Dennison is currently taking sign ups for the November Stableford, if you want to play give him a call, it is an individual Tournament. The always fun Christmas Tournament is upon us. Fill out your application early because space is limited, it is a true blind draw for teams and we will have the Golf Course to ourselves for the entire day. See Rich Dennison or someone on the Board if you have questions. Don’t miss it!
We are getting close to the end of the year and it is time for the election of the Board that will represent you for the following year. We have only one office that is being contested this election. There are three very qualified candidates running for the Director position.
Thanks for all your support, we will see you at the course.
Tom Link
President
The monthly meeting was held October 12, 2004 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent. The restaurant provided their usual great dinner tonight for your $6 donation. President Tom Link called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and led the membership in allegiance to our flag.
Past Presidents in attendance: Tom Conlisk, Richard Scoville, Steve Shure, Don Marmion, Mike Montgomery, Greg O’Brien, and Bob Livingstone.
Bob Livingstone and Fred Gibson represented our life membership.
The minutes from the last meeting and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.
We had one new member at tonight’s meeting. Bob Livingstone took him on the traditional informative tour.
President Link announced that we have representatives from American Golf to talk with us tonight. Flyers have been passed out for questions that members would like to have answered. At that time he introduce Brett and Javier. Brett is our new Grounds Keeper and has been here for about 6 weeks. He is excited to be here to support our great course and has plans to bring it back. There is a price change coming up. American Golf favors a 3-tiered system. Skylinks will be “Platinum”, we’ll be “Gold, and Rec Park will be “Silver”, each step a 25% cost increase. Of course the City will make the final decision. Brett read the new fees. For example we’ll be up $2 on weekdays, and $3 on weekends. Pres. Link then introduced Javier. Javier comes from Texas, and has worked with building a course In New Mexico, went east, and now he’s back here. He has been with American Golf 6 months. Someone commented about the crabgrass around the greens. Mike Montgomery asked if the monies from the first rate increase have been used to help maintain the course. The answer was “No”. Brett said it was more of a cost of living standard increase. Steve Shure made note that we were told the course would be kept up to a Premier condition. They have not lived up to what we were told. Steve noted that it seems American Golf does not have to answer to anyone on their being held to any standards. How do we keep our course and American Golf to be at the level they are accountable for? Steve wants Brett and Javier to know our Club’s position, and that we could go to the City and recommend someone else be selected to manage our course if need be. Jim Fuchs noted to Brett and Javier that we need them to go to American Golf to support our position. Javier noted the soil is too compacted and can not absorb water. He has asked for (2) aerifiers for use in aerating the soil (4) times per year in effort to correct this condition. Mel Collins discussed the wet greens and asked Javier to discuss his plan. Javier immediately said that these are the worst, and that he is not used to such greens.
Pres. Link introduced Dennis Wright who is overseeing the tournaments at the Long Beach courses. Dennis has been at Rec Park for 5 years working for the City of L.B. His jobs is to make sure that when Men’s, or any other, Clubs are having tournaments that the times are filled. Javier then made remark that he is trying to get the course back in better condition. Steve Shure noted that for 5 years people here have fallen, and that if this new group doesn’t get the tools and equipment they need that they will fall too.
Paul Wildy, Saturday Team Play Co-captain, noted that the people signed up for the 23rd, 30th, and 6th need to see or call him. Paul reinforced that if you are signed up for Team Play be sure you renewals are paid. They need to be paid NLT October 31, 2004 to remain eligible to play in an SCGA event for 2005.
Al Reinking noted Thursday the 28th is a scheduled day for them.
Bob Livingstone took the podium to discuss the elections for 2005. The ‘Boards slate was noted last meeting and tonight we are taking nominations from the floor. President – None, Vice President – None, Secretary – None, Treasurer – None. We have slated 3 persons for Director at Large for these 2 positions. No others were nominated. Motion to close the nominations was made, seconded, and approved. The vote will be held first thing during the November meeting. Last month was the Club Championship. The Senior winner was determined in a playoff between Mel Collins and Steve Friend. Mel prevailed. Our Club Champion for this year is John Dymon. The Club will cover John’s membership for 2005. Next year we will have one if not tow stroke play net championship flights.
Committee Reports:
Jerry Leininger – Handicap: In September some of our scores did not get sent to IDC. We will use your Trend score for this month’ as it is likely the most representative of how you are playing. We are looking into how we can keep this from happening again. October 3 is the date the Trend index was determined. These results are posted as well as being on our website.
Nick Zamora – Entertainment: What a weekend at Singing Hills. Next year we’ll go to a new course. It may be twice as expensive but it will also be a lot of fun. Skins were Net this year in giving everyone half of their handicap. We only had (2) Skins claimed, Fred Gibson and Chris Benes. November 7 is SCGA Member Course. Fee will be $75 with a probable 2-on-3, 3-on-4, and 4-on-5 format. A blind draw hole or two is always possible. Looking at some new courses for next year, be ready to play.
Mel Collins – Rules: Mel provided follow up on last month’s intro to Rule 25 as Tom McCutcheon did not agree with his interpretation of the rule. It is defined that a ball must be in its own pitch mark, that is the key. A ball in heavy grass could be a condition if the ball was in its own mark.
Don Russell – New Editor: Nothing to comment on tonight.
Dennis Tramer – Director: Flights are going along well. Several of the October rounds have already been played. Dennis noted that he and Mike Vaughn took second place in the weekender overall, and that in all his years it was the first that Mike has cashed at the weekender tournament. Mike acknowledged that ‘Fish is a great coach. Pat Nohalty won the Putting Contest with Terry Fulford taking second. Tom Bentele took the 9-hole tourney honors. G.O.M. for September were Steve Friend with a Gross 69, and Roger Scaife for a Net 64 (80 – 16).
Rich Dennison – Tournaments: There are a couple of openings left for this Saturday’s tournament. November will be a singles tourney. With the rate increase our tourney will now be $40 each player. Rich needs us to have their’ groups names together and the minimum $10 entry fee for each player. December is the Christmas tourney. We will have the course for the full day. Rates are $53 to walk and $62 to ride. Derbies will be held later in the day. Rich is shooting for 180 players. If more than the 180 sign up they will be playing. The format will be playing your own ball with any number of variations. Rich noted that the Thursday Team Play is need of players. If you can participate please contact Roger Scaife or Larry Lipman as soon as possible.
Old Business: Mike Vaughn commented that going into tonight 251 members have renewed, or about half. Mike noted that he received about 50 renewals tonight, and thanked the membership for their timely submitals.
Meeting adjourned.
Pres. Link called the first 10 names for sign up for the November tourney.
Raffle tickets continued to be sold. Don Russell drew the tickets, Rick Evans called the numbers while Greg O’Brien distributed the prizes. A lot of prizes were given away that included golf balls, towels, range cards, gloves, and hats.
50-50 was $60 tonight. The winner was George Manyak (he won the 50-50 in August as well!). That was a quick $30 for George and $30 for Jr. Golf.
The membership drawing tonight was for $130. The number of Lee Lockyer was drawn. Lee was not at the meeting. The prize will increase to $140 next month.

The stories of the Orange Ball were being told all afternoon in the El Dorado Bar. It’s amassing how the color of a ball can change how you normally play a hole. Why do you lose an orange ball? When you haven’t lost a ball in years. That’s the Dreaded Orange Ball.
The Gross winners this month have a couple of new names this month. Mike Marmer, Paul Hoch, Doug Jones, Kevin Orr and Greg Lester.
In the A-Flight we had are regular winners Tom Link, John Suttie Don Marmion, Frank Followell and Tom Braun. Albeit they won on a card off against 2 other teams they did win again.
In the B-Flight we had another card off. Nick Johnson, Terry Sweet, Marty Suart, Jim Clinton and Nigel Sherry got the win this month.
In the C-Flight the group of Dick Marsh, Fred Gerlach, Fredrick Gerlach, Bob Blanchard and Mr. Draw won easily it’s nice to have new names on the winners list.
November 13th will be the Modified Stable ford Tournament. The object to this tournament is to score as many points as possible, the one who scores the most points wins. (gross or net) Double Bogey or higher = --1 point, Bogey = 0 points, par = 1 point, Birdie = 3 points, Eagle = 5 points Double Eagle = 8 points. I have openings so give me a call and I’ll get you in. (562-822-2659)
The December Christmas Tournament is just around the corner, so get your sign up slips and money in so you don’t miss out. Remember we give away the excess monies on this one, plus we have the course for the day, there are Derby’s to sign up for and if you want you can play a few more holes as well. We will be playing 5 man teams. The shotgun start will began at 7:30am, don’t miss out this is a Fun one.
Talk about Fun ones I went to the weekender this year for the first time and found out that I had been missing the best deal in our golf club for years. Put next year’s weekender on your calendar now it’s well worth it.

Well yet another month comes to an end!! Before you know it we will be competing in the Christmas Tournament. This months Commissioners meeting was not real exciting, but some of the sub committee meetings brought out some interesting topics. The rounds for September for the two courses were down by four %. Our course was down 5.66%. The year to date rounds were also down by 1.35%. For our course year to date we our down 3.75%. But on the other hand the revenue generated is still doing well. $246 thousand went to the city during September. Our C.I.P. fund is actually going for the bond payment, but soon there will be some monies available for any projects that are needed. Junior Golf is doing well with 74 Thousand in that account. The Club hours are in line as well.
As you already probably know the superintendents have switched positions from Big Rec to El Dorado and El Dorado to Big Rec.???
I am on several sub committees this coming term. One being the Hall of Fame. We will be planning a very nice ceremony probably in April 2005. The event may include a tournament, as well as honoring the Hall of Fame inductees. I must ask if anyone has any type of memorabilia regarding Long Beach Golf. Pictures, news articles etc. If you do please get with me. They can be donated to the City or just loan them to the City for the Hall of Fame building. Also I am on the tournament committee. We are in the process of getting ideas together for the possibility of making changes to the current tournament operations manual. If you have any ideas of what you feel would be a fair change to the current format, please get with me. All of the ideas will be submitted to the City. We want to make the tournament operation as easy and enforceable as possible. Enough for now. I will see you at out next meeting.

Golf Commissioner
I have been asked by several members what to do if the tee markers are moved either way up or way back from the permanent marker sites. The simple answer is to post what you played. If you played white balls, post white. If you played the blue balls, post blue. The course should be set up so that the AVERAGE distance for the entire course should not be greatly changed. The maintenance crew may need to alter some tee placement to even out the wear and tear on the tee box or for seeding or other, however the overall distance should not be affected. This also means that if the tees are up for all par 3’s, that is no reason to post Whites in place of Blues that you played. Remember it is the OVERALL course yardage that is taken into consideration. To quote the SCGA Handbook,” Placement of tee-markers should be balanced so that the course’s effective playing length is approximately the same from day to day. Adjustments may be made to allow for weather and turf conditions”. So remember: play White – post White, play Blue – post Blue.
LI’s – With last months hassle with the computer, I wanted to let everyone know that you can get your index each month on the Internet. Just go to SCGA.org and on the home page on the right hand side sign into SCGA I mail. Follow the prompts and each month you will have your Current and LI before I get a chance to post it at El Dorado. Pretty slick if you haven’t tried it.
SCGA Member Report Card- This site on the SCGA home page will allow you to view or print out your 12-month history and review. Use the Index information to see where your LI is coming from and how it was determined. Remember that your LI is based on a your low index for a rolling 12 month cycle: November 03 to October 04 as example.
Thanks and remember – Try your best on each shot and post all your countable rounds.

President's Corner
We are rapidly coming to the close of another year. If you have not put your entry in for the Christmas Shotgun do so quickly, it will fill up. I would like to thank everyone on the Board for the great job they have done this year. All of them have put in a lot of their time and effort to make sure that things continue to run smoothly. If you get a chance give them a pat on the back, it is deserved. We will have a few changes to the makeup of our Board next year. Don Russell is stepping down as News Editor, his input and sense of humor will be missed, thank you Don for your continued service to the Club. Bob Livingstone will be changing positions due to his busy schedule with Long Beach State; he will serve as our SCGA Delegate. Mike Montgomery will serve on the Board as our Past President ! (Are you sure you want to do this again?)
Mike Marmer is moving from Director to Communications Chairman. (We are renaming the former position of News Editor). Rick Evans is moving from Special Events Chairman to Director and his position will be filled by Doug Jones. This will be Doug’s first time on the Board (we have tried to warn him) and we are looking forward to having Doug’s input.
I wish all of you a very safe and prosperous Holiday Season and will look forward to serving as you President next year.
Tom Link
President
The monthly meeting was held November 9, 2004 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent. The restaurant provided a chicken breast, beef, and gravy dinner tonight for your nominal donation of $6. President Tom Link called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and led the membership in allegiance to our flag.
Past Presidents in attendance: Tom Conlisk, Richard Scoville, Steve Shure, Don Marmion, Ray McElhenney, Mike Montgomery, Greg O’Brien, and Bob Livingstone.
Bob Livingstone and Fred Gibson represented our life membership.
The Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter was accepted. The minutes from the October meeting were not published due to a problem in getting them emailed to Seaside Printing. They are available to review on our website, and will be published in the next Newsletter.
Immediate Past President, Bob Livingstone, orchestrated the election of our 2005 Board of Directors. Bob noted that the two Director at Large positions are the only positions being contested. Those running for these are Rick Evans, Mike Marmer, and Dennis Tramer. Ballots were handed out to the attending members. The membership accepted and approved that only these positions are listed on the ballots. After a few moments to make your selection(s) the ballots were collected and taken for counting.
There were no new members at tonight’s meeting.
Committee Reports:
Ray McElhenney – Golf Commission: Ray noted that more trimming of the trees is going to be happening. The existing trimmings to the right of hole #11 will be cleaned up and removed. At this time the City is going through their golf course policies and procedures. Call or email Ray if you have some ideas on things that could / should be changed. It is antiquated and does need to be updated. Steve Shure wants the City to know that the low number of people playing the back 9 at both here and Rec. Park on weekends is less than 10, not their normal 48. Is this due to the condition of the course?
Rick Evans – Special Events: Rick had noting to report tonight.
Jerry Leininger – Handicap: Jerry wants to review what he placed in the Newsletter on what yardage to post after playing a round. You must take the overall yardage played into consideration. Best rule of thumb is that if you played the white markers post white. If you played the blue markers post blue. Lastly members can now perform peer review on the SCGA website. Check it out, it’s real easy.
Nick Zamora – Entertainment: Played SCGA last Sunday with no rain, what a break that was. It had a fun format of 2 scores on the par 3, 3 on the par 4, and all 4 on the par 5 holes. Nick noted that the team of Cairo Piercy, Rick Rolph, Mike McMahon, and Mike Drew took 1st place net. Nick thanked the Tramer team for coming. Something about being 31 strokes behind Cairo’s Clan. Nick has a lot of new courses set for next year. The Weekender will be at Temecula Creek. It is planned to post links to the courses we are playing through our Club website for hosting additional information.
President Link noted that Mel Collins took 1st place in the San Clemente City Championship. The Club gave Mel a nice round of applause.
Mel Collins – Rules: If your ball gets caught up in the shredded tree materials along holes #7 and #11 we have enacted local rule to allow free drop of the ball on the fairway side of the cart path. You must try to find the ball. If it cannot be found and everyone agrees it is in the rubble you may still take the free drop.
Mike Marmer – Director: No putting contest this month. 2 cards for Net G.O.M. Dennis Tramer turned in an 82 – 15 = 67 but it wasn’t good enough. Net winner was Terry Fulford who carded a fine 78 –13 = 65. The Gross contest had a few more entries. Tom McCutcheon shot a 72. Mike said something about shooting his age. Jim Fuchs shot a 69, but lost to Steve Friend who carded a 68 in the Orange Ball tourney. Nice round Steve.
Bob Livingstone reported back that the election ballots have been counted. Directors at Large of 2005 will be Rick Evans and Dennis Tramer. Motion to destroy the ballots was made and accepted. Joining Rick and Dennis on the elected board will be President – Tom Link, Vice President – Rich Dennison, Secretary – Mike Vaughn, and Treasurer – Al Ostberg.
Dennis Tramer – Director: El Dorado Cup is winding itself up. Only a few matches are yet to be played. Winners will get $100 in Scrip and a plaque. Runners up will receive $60 in Scrip. Dennis then read the finals pairings.
Don Russell – New Editor: Nothing to comment on tonight.
Rich Dennison – Tournaments: Modified Stableford this Saturday. Sheets will be on the tournament table to define the points to be earned for the scoring. A lot of interest is being shown for the Christmas tournament. This is always a fun event with a lot of money in it. Derbies will follow the regular tournament. We have the course for the whole day.
Old Business: Roger Scaife noted that if anyone can play on the Thursday Team Play team to contact him or Larry Lipman.
New Business: Roger and John Davis will be in contact with players who have made their teams on an individual basis.
Meeting adjourned.
Raffle tickets continued to be sold. Don Russell drew the tickets, Rick Evans called the numbers, and Mel Collins distributed the prizes. Prizes given away tonight, included golf balls, towels, range cards, gloves, and hats.
50-50 was $52 tonight. The winner was Tom Bentele. That was a quick $26 for Tom and $26 for Jr. Golf.
The membership drawing tonight was for $140. The number of John Bergendahl was drawn. John was not at the meeting. The prize will increase to $150 next month. Be sure to be at the meeting, as we will draw member’s numbers that night until we hit a number of a member who is there. That’ll be a nice Merry Christmas from the Club for someone.

Congratulations to all who cashed in the Stableford tournament. In the Gross Flight the winner was Mel Collins with a score of 33 points, Mel shot an outstanding score of 65 on that day. The A Flight was won by Brent Huntington with 32 points. The B Flight was won by Nick Fitzgerald with a score of 33 points. The C flight was won by Brian O’Malley with a score of 32 points. Nice playing gentlemen, I only can hope that my game will come back around someday so that I might cash again.
I owe an apology to all the Players in the Stabelford Tournament who where not told of a ruling on the morning of the tournament. The ruling was that you could bump your ball out of the little holes that were on the fairways caused by the over seeding, which in realty was lift clean and place. In the future if there has to be a last minute ruling before the tournament I will have a sign at the check-in table so that everyone can see it. I should not have left the information to word of mouth. I am sorry if I caused any grief to a player in the Tournament.
The end of the year is upon us and it has gone fast. The December Tournament is a Blind Draw 5-some. The first 180 Players to sign up are divided in 5 groups of 36, 1 out of each group is pulled and that makes up the 5-somes. The tournament will not be flighted or will there be a Gross. The Format will be 3 Best Balls. We have the Course all Day, so if your not in a Derby, you can play some more holes if you want, after the Tournament. YOU CAN NOT PLAY IN A DERBY IF YOU DO NOT PLAY IN THE TOURNAMENT... This is a fun Tournament, the last chance to sign up is the December meeting.
At the December 14th meeting I will be taking sign ups for the January Scramble (for all you new members I’m at the end of the table). You must have your name in the Pitcher before the start of the meeting at 7pm to have a chance to be drawn for a starting time. Jan & Feb are short hour months and there are not a lot of times available. Remember the Dec meeting has the best Raffle of the year, so don’t miss it.

Well this will be my last article for 2004!! Believe it or not Christmas is just around the corner??!! Not a great deal to report this month, but here goes. The rounds of golf were down in October. One reason was this was one of the wettest Octobers we have had in many "moons". For the month the rounds for all courses were down 10.66%. Our club was down 12.04%. Year to date totals are .23% down for all courses, and we are still on the plus side being 2.22% up. The club hours are very much in line.
Some maintenance reports for our layout. The tree trimming should be complete. The tree trimmings were to have been removed by the 19th of November. The greens were aerified in October, and the overseeding has taken place. It does appear that the course is taking on a much better appearance. Hopefully that trend will continue??
The Jr. Golf Fund is as usual doing well. Over 74 Thousand in that account. The opening day tournament at Skylinks raised over 18 Grand for that fund, not bad.
We are continuing to look at the tournament policy and procedures. Like I mentioned if you have any ideas regarding outside events at our courses, please let me know so I can get your ideas passed on.
Again I would ask if anyone has any Long Beach Golf Memorabilia for the new Hall Of Fame building, please let me know. We can put it there on a loaner situation, or actually donate for life.
The Banquet facilities at Skylinks are supposed to be complete at the end of the month?? Some minor areas are being addressed at Skylinks, but overall it is very much open for business. In January I will have some numbers for Skylinks. That pretty much wraps up this article. See you at our big Christmas meeting.

As you have probably read from President Link’s article or seen on the Schedule Card, I will not be on the Board of Directors next year, and I wanted to briefly inform you all of the reasoning behind my decision. I have been involved with the Board for over 20 years and I have enjoyed every minute of it, however, the travel schedule required by my job is such that I am forced to miss several tournaments and General Meetings every year. This is not fair to the other members of the Board who must cover my assignments. Our By-Laws designate a position on the Board be filled by “the most recent past President who is willing and able to serve” and Mike Montgomery has agreed to fill that spot in 2005. Mike has the time to give to the Club that I do not, and is very excited about helping out. Mike will be able to do more for the Club than I would, and therefore I believe he should be in that spot on the Board, and the other members of the Board agree.
I will not be completely uninvolved, however. I will always help where I can, and I have agreed to be the Club’s Delegate to the SCGA, which will make me a non-voting member of the Board, and will allow my knowledge of the history of the Club and the Board to still be heard at Board Meetings and in the decisions that the Board makes – although they have only listened to me like 3 or 4 times since Jimmy Carter left office, so I’m not sure how much impact that will actually have!
Anyway, I want to thank you all for your support and commitment to this Club. It is in good hands and I believe will continue to be an exemplary member of the SCGA.
