President's Corner

Happy New Year!  Before we begin discussing 2003, I want to offer thanks on behalf of the entire membership to those individuals who retired from the Board this past year.  Tom McCutcheon’s service includes numerous positions during his 18 years on the Board, and he will also be serving as Thursday Team Play Captain this year.  Richard Scoville came out of “retirement” to serve an outstanding couple of more years as Handicap Chairman.  Mike McMahon has filled several appointed and elected offices and looks forward to continuing his service to the Club in the future.  Frank Followell gave it the old college try and we appreciate his time and service.  And finally, Mike Montgomery rides off into the sunset behind the Orange Curtain after actively serving for many years; somehow I doubt he’ll go away forever.  I also thank and congratulate our Past President, Greg O’Brien, who was deservedly bestowed an Honorary Life Membership at the last meeting.  Thanks to all of you!

 As most of you know, we have five new Board members this year.  Jerry Leininger will take over the Handicap Chairman position and Nick Zamora will conduct our away trips as Entertainment Chairman.  Rick Evans will “Shake ‘Em Up” as Special Events Chairman while our reigning Club Champion, Mike Marmer, will be our new Rules Chairman.  Rounding out the Board will be former Board member Don Russell who returns to serve as Newsletter Editor.  As the Board tries to serve the membership, we are seeking members who would like to help on Committees that carry out Club functions and activities.  If you are interested in becoming more involved in the Club, please contact me or any other member of the Board to ask any questions or offer your help. 

 We had a great turn out for the December Meeting and Big Raffle.  It would be great to see such turnouts all year long.  We are working on ideas to boost the Monthly Raffle and would love to have your input on things that you would like to see (or not see!) at meetings.  The first three tournaments of the year always fill quickly so I know we will see a lot of you at the January and February meetings, which is great, but I also hope you come even if you aren’t trying to sign up for an event.

 By the time you receive this, SCGA Team Play will have already begun.  Each week in January and February, 16 members on both the Thursday Team and the Saturday Team will be representing our Club to other golfers in southern California.  We wish you good luck, and know that you will try to represent the very best of our Club. 

 Finally, thanks to Paul Goydos for playing in the Christmas Tournament again this year.  Paul’s chip-in for eagle on the 18th hole knocked several people out of Beat the Pro, but it was worth it to see him defeat certain people in his group!   We all wish him good luck as he starts his 11th year on the PGA Tour (hard to believe he played Team Play back in 1989!).   If his schedule permits—and that may be tough based on the events he should get into—we’ll try to have him come to a meeting and do a question and answer session.

Meeting Minutes

The monthly meeting was held January 14, 2003 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent.  Hearty appetites enjoyed dinner for the nominal $6. President Livingstone called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm and led the membership in allegiance to our flag.

 Past Presidents in attendance: Tom Conlisk, Richard Scoville, Steve Shure, Mike Montgomery, and Greg O’Brien.

 Tom Burris and Bob Livingstone represented our life membership.

 The minutes from the last meeting and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.

 As usual for the January meeting several new members were in attendance.  They all took the microphone and gave their names, occupation, and presumed handicap. There was a blend of blue collar through legal in the mix.  Greg O’Brien took them on an informative tour.

 Our Golf Commissioner, Ray McElhenney, was not able to make tonight’s meeting.  There was no Commission meeting held in January so he would not have had anything new to report.

 Team Play, Saturday – Jim Baber noted that we opened the year last Saturday at home Vs. Fullerton and won 28 – 20.  Low rounds went to Tom Conlisk and Wayne Aho who shot net 68.    Jim stated that Jorge and Tony did a great job in getting the tee times off in time, and the restaurant did a good job too.  We play Fullerton there this Saturday.

 Team Play – Tom McCutcheon; Tom said that we played Industry here last Thursday, and thank you.  (You can read between the lines on that on).

 Committee Reports:

 Jerry Leininger – Handicap: When new members turn in cards for establishing their handicap Jerry wants them all to be sure to include their printed complete name, date of round, and the tee that you played.  Without the tee noted the rounds are posted as blue.  Tournament indexes can be seen on the website.

 Mike McMahon and Cairo Piercy – GOM: McMahon needed to declare the December GOM winners.  Only two cards turned in for Gross. Jim Fuchs took the honors with a 71.  Net was taken by John Davis with a 75 – 11 for a 64.  Mike stressed the importance in completing GOM card per the rules for GOM.  Your card must note your name, date of the round, SCGA number, the tee you played, the correct number of stokes you receive for that tee (for net players), your signature, and another Men’s Club member’s signature for the attest.  GOM must also be boldly written across the face of the card.  The 2002 Golfer of the Year tournament is scheduled for Sunday, February 23, 2003.  This will be for both, Gross and Net.  Mike read off the monthly winners from 2002.  Cairo Piercy told the membership that he would be hosting the GOY, and asked everyone to thank Mike for his efforts last year.

 In effort to enlighten the meeting Pres. Livingstone had a raffle number called out for $15.  Winner Mark Ziegenhagen.

 Nick Zamora – Entertainment: Nick wants the new membership to know that we have away tournaments at other courses.  Cost is usually $65 to $85, and usually pay to 3 or 4 places with Special Events such as Closest to the Pin that are a lot of fun.  See Nick so you can get in on these great outings.  Nick is looking for suggestions for courses on where we would like to hold an away tournament.  This will help him in planning for next year.  February 2nd is San Luis Rey.  Cost is $75 for golf, cart, and tournament fees.  Format will be a 4-man Waltz where the team scores 1 best ball on the first hole, 2 on the second, 3 on the 3rd, 1 on the 4th, 2 on the 5th, and so on in a 1-2-3 pattern through the completion of 18 holes.  We are playing General Old on Sunday, March 2nd.  Cost for the General is $65, not $75 as was noted in the December Newsletter.

 Rich Dennison – Special Events: Rick hopes that everyone continues to support the Club in the raffle as we did tonight.  As well as the prize raffle, Rick has collected $85 for the 50/50 drawing.  There won’t be any skins this Sunday as the format is a Scramble.  He will have Special Events on the par 3 holes, as well as a long drive for each flight.  Rick will gladly listen to any suggestions for was to mix it up, especially from new members who might like something that was done at another club they’ve belonged to.

 Mike Marmer – Rules: Mike just wants everyone to know that he is the new bad guy in town, your Rules Chairman.  Mike is to attend a 4-day rules seminar in March, which should have him up to speed on today’s rules.  The new 100 and 150-yard bushes are to be played as immovable obstruction where you will get relief for swing or stance, not line of sight.  This is a Local Rule, which may someday change.  Now that Team Play is going on Mike updated the Club on 4-ball ruling when practice on the green is allowed.  Mike gave a scenario, and after a few incorrect answers, Mike disclosed that one couldn’t practice until after both you and your partner has holed out.

 Pres. Livingstone called out another raffle ticket.  This one was for $20.  Winner Alex Gay.

 Rich Dennison – Putting Contest: IN April we will start having a Putting Contest before the monthly meeting.  If you have any suggestions please place them in the Men’s Club drawer in the Pro Shop.  Let him now anything you want to do.

 Tom Link – Tournaments: Tom is open to suggestions for the Christmas tournament, 5-some, 6-some, or whatever.  The Derbies after the X-Mas tournament were a lot of fun.  The January tournament is full.  1st tee time is 6:27 and the last is 12:00 Noon.  You will need to concentrate on speed of play.  Be sure to keep moving.  If you lose a ball forget about it and go on as you’re not going to use that ball anyway.  After the first putters get close to the hole they should move on to the next hole to tee up.  15 names were called for signing up for the February tournament.

 Old Business: Greg O’Brien wanted to discuss the Hole In One insurance fund.  We presently have over $600 in it now.  The list is posted at the course.  Verify that you are in it.  If you are not get him $3 for your insurance payment.  This is for any Hole In One at home during one of our monthly tournaments

 New Business – Pres. Livingstone noted that he had an announcement, not an endorsement, that David Solomon, once Club Champion and Starter here at El Dorado has turned pro.  He Dave has gone through the first stage of his tour qualifying and is looking for someone / anyone  to sponsor / take stock in him.  Last year Dave made more money than he spent.

 Terry Fulford noted that if you still owe for Paul Wildy’s Super Bowl pool to get it to him ASAP or you will lose your spot.

 Meeting adjourned.

 Rick Evans called the raffle tickets out.  Pres. Livingstone handed out the prizes.  We gave away a lot of prizes that included cash, a golf club travel bag, hats, golf balls, range cards, and more.

 50-50 was $112 tonight.  The winner was Dave Finkes.  $56 for Dave and $56 for Jr. Golf.

 The membership drawing starts every year at $50.  The number of Mike McMahon was pulled.  As you now from earlier in this Newsletter that Mike was at the meeting, but for some unknown reason he left before the Membership Drawing.  We will add $10 to it each month until it is claimed, and then will start at $50 again.  AS Mr. McMahon can tell you, when you come to the meeting it is best to stay to the very end.

Tournament Chairman

We were blessed again this year with good weather for our annual Christmas Tournament. The format this year was changed to fivesomes as opposed to sixsomes on each tee. We ended up with a full field of 180 players and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. The Derbies after the tournament are always fun, so if you missed this year’s we certainly hope you will be able to join us next year.

We accepted sign-ups for our January Scramble, which will be on Sunday the 19th. The Tournament is full but I am accepting sign-ups for our stand-by list. The first three tournaments of the year are usually booked solid from sunup to sundown because of the short days. If you were not able to get in this tournament and signed up I will be sure to get you into the next one.

I hope everyone had a pleasant holiday and will look forward to seeing all of you at our January 14th general meeting!

I hope you are ready for some golf away this year. Our first trip is to San Luis Rey Downs, on Sunday, February 2, 2003. The format will be a Waltz and the fee is $75.00, which includes golf, cart, and tourney fees. A $5.00 skins game will be arranged at the sign-in table at the course, so look for me there. There are still some openings so find me at the General meeting, or call me (don’t forget to bring your money). I will also be taking sign-ups for General Old, which is on Sunday, March 2. 2003. The format there will be 2 best balls and the fee will be $75.00. So sign up as a single, or as a whole foursome. See you at the meeting!

President's Corner

Well, it was 87 today (Super Bowl Sunday), yet I just lost a recruit to Iowa State, where it was in the low teens today…how does that happen? My condolences to all of you Raider fans out there, but as someone who has despised them with the white-hot intensity of a thousand Super Novas since the early 70's, I'm simply ecstatic!

We had a great turnout for the January Meeting and both the raffle and 50/50 pot had the best participation in awhile. Buy your tickets early in February, as we will again have a few drawings during the meeting, and Rick Evans has a financial bonus to random ticket buyers, which will be addressed at a later time. Also at the meeting we will get a recap of Nick Zamora's first away trip, Thursday and Saturday Team results and news from Cairo about this month's Golfer of the Year tournament. Don't miss it!

Our first tourney of the year went off without much a hitch. Early morning fog hurt a little, but the last group finished while still able to see the little red "gimme" tape on the flagstick. Congrats to everyone who won something (that did not include my group, unfortunately). Slow play was again discussed during this event, which many feel should be played in under 5 hours. For about the last half of the field, this was not the case. We need input from you members about how upsetting slow play can be, because if we are to address it effectively, we (i.e. the Board members and volunteers who work the tournaments) will have to be very forceful in our actions. No one hates slow play more than I do, but at the same time, I feel that most members feel our tournaments are more of a collegial or fraternal day of enjoyment, in which case it is not worth the effort to upset speed people while speeding them along. Please let Tom Link or any other Board member you know what your feelings are on this issue, so we may proceed accordingly.

Tournament Chairman

If you like to play golf in the fog you would have loved to have played early in this years January Scramble.  We teed off twenty minutes behind because of the visibility (there wasn't any). Despite these problems everyone in the field was able to complete their round.  Thanks to all of you for keeping up the pace of play, the last group played in 5 hours.  A special thanks to the Board of Directors for a job well done.

To the Tournament, I thought our group played pretty well.  We were 13 under par gross after an eagle on the 18th hole.  All of us were pumped up thinking our additional 3 strokes for net would put us in the $$$$$$.  We didn't get a sniff.  The winning gross score was 56.  On the surface that doesn't seem too low, now take off the 8 strokes they would have received as a team to put  them at a smooth 48 net.  Where is the Handicap chairman when you need him????

Great round turned in by Rich Dennison (Board of Director), Jim Crosby, Dave Hasselman, John Hasselman and Darryl Lee.  I mentioned earlier that every group was able to finish, but why is it that the last group(coming in darkness) always seems to cash??  Ray McElhenney (Golf Commissioner), Rob Marchegiano, Ed Polizzo, Dan Schmitz & Rodney Sung with a net 48.  Too good for me.

 Our Select Drive tournament for February is full and I have a few people on the stand by list.  We will be taking sign ups for our March tournament at the February 11th General Meeting.  The March tournament will be a reverse waltz, counting 3 best balls on the 1st hole, 2 best balls on the 2nd hole and best ball on the 3rd hole.  We then repeat the process for the next three holes.  Come to the General meeting and sign up for the tournament drawing, everyone has an equal chance to be chosen.  See you there

Commissioner's Report

HELLO EVERYONE AND WELCOME TO A NEW YEAR. HOPEFULLY YOU ALL HAD A WONDERFUL AND SAFE NEW YEARS. WE JUST HAD OUR FIRST COMMISSIONERS MEETING YESTERDAY 1/20/03. NOT A GREAT DEAL TO REPORT BUT I WILL SOME HIGHLIGHTS OF WHAT IS CURRENTLY GOING ON. FIRST SOME NEWS ON SKYLINKS. BY THE TIME YOU READ THIS THE LEASE SHOULD HAVE BEEN SIGNED BY THE CITY AND AMERICAN GOLF. THE WORK IS SUPPOSED TO BEGIN THE FIRST WEEK OF FEBRUARY??? AMERICAN GOLF AND THE MENS CLUB FROM SKYLINKS HAVE MET AND THEY WERE ABLE TO ACCOMMODATE THEM BY SCHEDULING SIX OF THEIR EVENTS. ONE AT OUR COURSE AND FIVE AT RECREATION PARK. OBVIOUSLY THIS DOES NOT AFFECT OUR SCHEDULE OF TOURNAMENTS. REPORTED BY JAY CARBALLO THE ALLOTTED HOURS FOR TOURNAMENTS IS IN LINE. THE CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT FUND IS VERY MUCH ALIVE AND KICKING, AT THIS POINT WE CANNOT PROCEED WITH ANY PROJECTS UNTIL THE SKYLINKS SITUATION IS RESOLVED, MEANING START DATES NOT COMPLETION DATE. 

DECEMBER ROUNDS WERE DOWN 2.28% WITH OUR COURSE BEING DOWN 4.03%. FOR THE YEAR THE ROUND WERE DOWN ONLY SLIGHTLY AT .03%. AS YOU CAN SEE VERY LITTLE CHANGE. THERE WILL BE NOMINATION FORMS FOR THE HALL OF FAME AT OUR PRO-SHOP, SO IF YOU HAVE SOME ONE WHO QUALIFIES, BY ALL MEANS GET THEM NOMINATED. WELL I THINK THAT WILL DO IT FOR NOW. I WILL SEE YOU AT OUR NEXT MEETING.

President's Corner

Quite a bit has happened in the past month.  Kudos to Cairo for a great job in running the annual Golfer of the Year tournament.  The number of the day was 69, as that was the winning score in both the net and gross flights.  Cairo and Rich Dennison will also be running the Quad Club, and will address that at the meeting.  The Select Drive was played without incident, except our group again didn’t even sniff cashing...we did have fun, however!  We began easing into some proactive pace of play policies and actions at this tournament and we will continue to refine them, as we work on this problem.  We were glad to see support for this from the membership, and we will continue to address this, but we need your help and cooperation.

Special thanks go to our course superintendent, Jack Glant and his crew, for their work on the course last month. They worked overtime after the big rainstorm the week before our tournament to get the course playable for us…THANKS!  Saturday Team Play has again advanced to the play-offs, and Captain Jim Baber should know their first opponent by meeting night.  Thursday Team finally hit its stride (after I left the line-up) but Industry Hills was just too tough an opponent to overcome. 

We have had great attendance at our first two general meetings of the year.  With Rick Evans continuing his special touches to the raffle, Nick Zamora preparing for Los Serranos and Tom Link and Al Ostberg dutifully taking tournament signups, I expect the big attendance to continue.

In Memory

Bob Wilson, who served as President of our Club in 1983, passed away in November.  Bob was a jovial guy who loved golf and our Club.  He moved to Las Vegas many years ago, but always looked forward to receiving our monthly Newsletters and keeping up on what we were doing.  Our sympathies go out to his wife Cleo.

Meeting Minutes

The monthly meeting was held February 11, 2003 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent.  Beef and gravy, mashed potatoes, and the fixings were available for $6. President Livingstone called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm and led the membership in allegiance to our flag.

Past Presidents in attendance: Tom Conlisk, Richard Scoville, Steve Shure, Ray McElhenney, Mike Montgomery, and Greg O’Brien.

Tom Burris and Bob Livingstone represented our life membership.

The minutes from the last meeting and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.

One new member took the podium to state his name, occupation, and presumed handicap.  Greg O’Brien took him on the informative tour.

Tony Rizzo, El Dorado General Manager, had a couple things to discuss.  The course is now under a new blanket with a new C.E.O.  There will be more money put into the golf course (i.e. parking lot, tree trimming, etc…).  Jack’s guys are going to be cutting the rough down to a shorter length to help in finding balls that get in the stuff.  Terry Fulford inquired when the urinal that has been out of order for three weeks is to be fixed.  Tony will bring this up with Becky.

Committee Reports:

Ray McElhenney - Golf Commissioner: Not a lot going on right now.  He has heard that Feb. 17 was Skylinks date, but nothing is set as to what he can tell.  El Dorado rounds were down 4-½% in January, but up 5% for the 12-month period.  Their revenue was $341,000, which includes lessons, green fees, bar sales, etc…  They can’t move forward on the Capital Improvement Plan just yet.  Recommendations are being received.  As for the bond issue, the money goes to a third party, payable back on a yearly basis.  American Golf has Skylinks on a rotational schedule for six tournaments.  Five will be at Rec Park, with the other one here, no 2-day events.  There will be another meeting on Wed. Feb. 26 at 2:00 p.m. at Heartwell Park to discuss the “outside tournaments” that American Golf schedules at the city courses.  We have the numbers and this will be adamantly discussed.  Ray needs to know the away tournament dates.  In June we will have our 2004 schedule.  Lastly, Ray noted that there are forms to fill out for what you see that can and should be improved.

Jerry Leininger – Handicap: Jerry has the 2003 SCGA handicap cards for new members and for later renewals who did not get theirs mailed to them.

Nick Zamora – Entertainment: Results are posted for the San Luis Rey tournament.  He has posted a lot of information about the away tournaments on the website.  Trying to be helpful, Cairo Piercy was open with suggestions and pointers to try to make Nick’s job easier.  Nick graciously accepted this input.  General Old is scheduled for Sunday, March 2.  He needs entry monies for this ASAP so the tee times can be posted.  We’re going to Los Serranos on April 6th.  The index will be adjusted due to their loss of so many eucalyptus trees.

One raffle ticket was drawn for (2) sleeves of balls.

Mike Marmer – Rules: During Saturday Team Play a member had a suction cup on his putter to use for retrieving ball from the hole.  Questions came up as to if this is a conforming grip.  According to the Rules of Golf it is not which led to a disqualification.  Mike discussed rules for players with similar putts, and the rule where a player cannot change status from player to caddie on the same hole.  He also noted that if players A and B tee off, but players C and D come late to the tee and claim to have honors that A and B can not be forced to replay after both A and B have already hit.  Don Russell asked about the drop area to the right of #8 whereas it is not behind the hazard.  The drop area is a local rule that we will need to discuss.

Rick Evans – Special Events: Special marks were placed on a few raffle tickets.  Dave Pemberton won $10 for holding one of them.  There were (3) marked tickets and only (1) of them was sold.  We need members to actively purchase raffle tickets at the meetings.

Cairo Piercy – GOM / GOY: Only had (2) Net GOM cards. Tom Conlisk won over Rich Gilmore (who shot the round of his life, net 66) with a fine 76 – 13 = 63.  Gross went to Doug Jones who turned in card for both a 72 and a 70.  GOY is all set up.  Times are from between 9:06 and 9:50.  Gross players will be playing with Gross players, Net with Net.

Another raffle ticket was drawn, this time for a hat and a sleeve of balls.

Team Play, Saturday – Jim Baber expressed his thanks to Tony, Jorge, Becky, and to Mark Miller for his website support.  Happy to announcement that we are one win away from winning our division.  Highlights last Saturday were by Tom Conlisk, Ruben Gonzales, Steve Shure, and Kevin Orr.  One more win and we’re off to the playoffs.

Team Play – Tom McCutcheon; Concurs with Jim on the support from the course and the members.  Thursday team has won 2 of their last 3 matches, and intends to win again on Thursday.

Tom Link – Tournaments: Questions came to him concerning the scrip with “Merchandise Only” stamped on them.  Tony will allow their use for green fees and carts, but not on weekends or tournaments.  The Scramble fell about 20 minutes behind schedule early in the tournament.  The last group finished in just over 5 hours.  The February Select Drive is full, but he needs standbys.   You will be playing to 65% of your handicap.  All cards will be computer generated, which will have the strokes already marked on the respective holes.  The March tournament is a Reverse Waltz. 15 names were called from the lottery for tee times.

Old Business: Greg O’Brien noted the Hole-In-One fund is now up to $778.  Get in if you aren’t already in it.  See Mike Montgomery on the first tee on Sunday.

New Business – We should be playing quicker than we are.  It is realized that there are a lot of people who fraternize with friends at the course and are just having fun.  The ‘Board needs to find out how the membership feels before we enforce slow play penalties, we want to get the membership feedback.  Steve Shure feels we need to look at groups that are continually behind, out of position and warned several times.  He feels they need to be punished with penalties and perhaps only allowed late times in future tournaments.  Slow walkers will be required to get carts as directed.  Mike Montgomery noted that the groups

Between 6:00 and 9:00 need to respect the other groups by keeping in motion.  Tom Link noted the need to play ready golf.  There is no reason we can’t hit our ball, then go to help a partner find his.  Unanimous agreement by the membership that we need to keep pace.  The Rules Committee will meet on defining the action we will take on this matter.

50-50 was $52 tonight.  The winner was Frank Followell.  This was split $26 for Frank, and $26 for Jr. Golf.

Membership drawing was for $60.  The number of Don “Dad” Marmion was pulled.  Unfortunately for Dad he was ill and could not make the meeting.  Next month it will be for $70.

We had a very good turnout for our February Select Drive Tournament this year.  We were booked from sun-up(6:18) until 12:30 p.m. The pace of play was acceptable, but we seem to have a lot of trouble getting off the first tee box on time.  We will run on time until about 8:30 and then we will start to fall behind.  The scheduled group at 12:30 did not tee off until 1:00, so it was very close to not having them able to finish.  We are open to any and all suggestions as to how we can improve.

The Gross flight was tightly contested, Ed Fernandes, Bob & Jay Johnston, Micah Albao and Steve Friend lost in a card off to Jim Fuchs, Tom Flynn, Mike Marmer, John Shellenberger and Ted Burroughs.  The Net Flight results are listed in the Newsletter.

We will be drawing for spots in our April Tournament at the meeting on Tuesday March 11th.  This will mark the beginning of  Daylight savings time and will  extend the hours of play.  We should be able to get everyone in this tournament.

Start thinking about the Member-Member that will be held in May.  This is a mail in tournament and is one of the most anticipated tournaments of the year.

Rules Chairman

Mike Montgomery, who was working the First Tee at the February tournament, brought to my attention that several players were practicing chipping between the first tee and the ninth hole.  Mike felt that this constituted "Practice" and would be a violation. 

Rule 7-1 prohibits "practice on the competition course on the day of the competition."
The penalty for violation is "DISQUALIFICATION." 

There is one exception to Rule 7-1.  "Practice putting or chipping on or near the first teeing ground before starting a round or play-off is permitted."  So Mike you need not worry.

It's winter time; see if you know the answer to this question:  Rule 14-2 provides as follows:  "In making a stroke, a player shall not:  a.  Accept physical assistance or protection from the elements..."

Question:  In the rain, a player holds an umbrella over his head with one hand while holing a short putt with his putter held in the other hand; there is no penalty.

a.  True       b.  False

Answer:

Rule 14-2 prohibits a player, while making a stroke, from accepting protection from the elements from someone other than himself.  However, it does not prohibit him from protecting himself during the making of a stroke.  The Answer is True.  Did you get it right or wrong?

Commissioner's Report

Well Gentleman my article is a bit late but here it is for the month of February. Our meetings have been changed to the last Wednesday of each month. Hopefully I will be able to meet the deadline for our Newsletter. 

First on the agenda was the news regarding Skylinks Golf Course. If you did not read about it in the local newspaper, the plans have again changed!!!  The redesign is now to take place in October?? I really do not have an opinion on that, but per the city this will take place in October, so we will just have to wait and see. Jay Carballo has made a commitment to get Skylinks back up to "par" with the other courses? He wants to bring back some customers to that facility so he will along with his staff will be working to gain a customer base!! 

Rounds played at El Dorado during January 2003 were 7,897, that is up 3.78% from 2002 January. For all the courses the play was up 2.79% compared to last year at the same time. The revenue generated by our course for January was 361 grand!!, not bad. The C.I.P funds stand at 847 grand. At this point those funds will remain basically untouched until an agreement has been reached regarding Skylinks?? The Strategic Plan will be coming out hopefully in April. This plan will assist in looking at the overall golf operation for the City of Long Beach. 

Finally the purchase of American Golf has been finalized. The company the bought them was Goldman/Sachs. There are not to be any wholesale changes per Jay.

President's Corner

Despite a rain out last month, there is much about which to talk! Along with April comes Daylight Savings Time, which means the monthly 9-hole tournament (look for more on this in an article from Cairo) and the putting tournament (look for more on this from Rich Dennison…I’ve heard you’ll see him standing, er make that sitting guard on the putting green before the meeting, possibly with a beverage to keep him company!).

April is also the month of the Quad Club. Rec Park is hosting this event and Cairo will be our contact.  Saturday Team Play continues its winning ways, with a victory today over Indian Hills. Keeping with the “Hills” motif, they will next face arguably the toughest opponent there is, in Industry Hills. The Industry Hills complex was recently purchased by a new management group, and I predict that those who go there will be pleasantly surprised by the improvements that have been made.

I will be traveling with the golf team on the day of our meeting—returning from my second favorite golf course in the world, Pasatimepo Golf Club—and my flight will probably not return in time for the start of the meeting. If this is the case, you will I’m sure show our esteemed Veep Tom Link the same respect you show me…good luck Tom.

Meeting Minutes

The monthly meeting was held March 11, 2003 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent.  Your $6 put corned beef and cabbage; sided by potatoes in a sauce that had a different, slightly odd tasting sauce in front of you. President Livingstone called the meeting to order at 7:10 pm and led the membership in allegiance to our flag.

Past Presidents in attendance: Tom Conlisk, Richard Scoville, Steve Shure, Don Marmion, Ray McElhenney, Mike Montgomery, and Greg O’Brien.

Once again, Mr. Tom Burris and Bob Livingstone represented our life membership.

Pres. Livingstone noted that a memorial was in the March newsletter for our 1983 Past President, Bob Wilson.  Bob passed away in November 2002.  A moment of silence was observed.  It was also noted that Mike Callahan had surgery for kidney cancer and is at home recovering.  We can all include asking for Mike’s full recovery in our prayers.

 Past president Don Marmion missed collect the cash prize for the membership drawing, as he was home with an illness.  Don is hoping that his number can be drawn again tonight.

 Three new members took the podium, stating their name, occupation, and presumed handicap.  These guys are claiming way too much handicap, one even blamed his putter.  Greg O’Brien took him on the informative tour.

 Tony Rizzo, El Dorado General Manager: The fairways are to be widened a bit and the rough will be cut down on number 1 to help with the speed of play.  Tony fielded and answered questions from the membership.  The aeration is schedule for next Monday, the day following our tournament.

Two raffle tickets that have special markings on them have been sold.  Frank Pecora and Jerry Leininger held them.  Frank won his choice of tee times, while Jerry pocketed $10.  Their tickets are still good for the raffle the follows the meeting.

Committee Reports:

Ray McElhenney - Golf Commissioner: Brief review tonight.  They plan to hold their meetings on the last Wednesday of each month.  They had 7,900 rounds in January. That is 3% more than last year.  El Dorado accumulative revenue was $361,000 in January.  There is a lot of money in the CIP, but we can’t get to it at this time.  The strategic plan is the city has hired people from the outside to observe what we are doing, and how to generate more money for the city.  Outside tournaments are still a concern, especially since Skylinks did not close.  Lastly, Jay Carballo has made a commitment to restore Skylinks condition.  We’ll see what happens. Goldman / Sachs has officially purchased American Golf.

Team Play: Tom McCutcheon thanked everyone for their support of the Thursday team.  Jim Baber, Saturday captain, wanted to express thanks to Tony and Jorge, to Mark Miller for his website support, and to Ton Link for the efforts he expended to help facilitate the team this year.  We won our division and playoffs are to start a week from Saturday at Los Verdes.  Jim was really pleased with his 22-player team and has enjoyed being their captain.  They will do their best in the playoffs.

Nick Zamora – Entertainment: Immediately requested the membership to hold their applause.  General Old went well.  It was a brisk with some wind, a bit cold, but we had great views of the mountain ranges that surround that course.  Los Serranos is fast coming up, April 6.  Our times are from 10:00 to 11:30.  Cost is $80.  Format will be taking the 3 best balls on the par 3 and par 5 holes and the 2 best balls on the par 4 holes.  Nick had a question about the slope, it is still the same.  The bus trip to Soboba Springs is scheduled for May 3.  The bus will be leaving El Dorado at 5:30.  Nick is trying a new format, a 4-step waltz.  It’ go 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4, 1-2 to see yourselves around the layout.  With our new format for printing the computer cards for tournaments, if you make any modifications to your team please let Nick know ahead of time so that you card reflects the team you’ll have that day.

Pres. Livingstone drew a raffle ticket.  Eric Sasaki won an El Dorado hat.

Mike Marmer – Rules: The suction cup on the putter was researched via the disqualification on Saturday team play.  The USGA says this is not considered part of the grip.  The hard card for local rules will be available for our next tourney.  We are allowing stance and swing relief with no penalty from the 100 and 150 yard bushes, and lake on hole #8 is now a water hazard, not a lateral hazard.   Tom McCutcheon interjected that you also have free lie of ball relief from the bush yardage markers.

Newsletter Editor – Don Russell: Don walked by the front of the podium and was recognized for the fine job he is doing.

Cairo Piercy – Quad Club and GOM: He has 39 of the 40 players needed for Quad Club, but will still need players on the standby.  Payment for the event is due to him NLT next monthly meeting.  Please put your money in the Men’s Club drawer.  If you have any questions give him a call.  Cost to ride will be $44, to walk $32.  Cairo only wants the $32.  The $12 cart cost will be collected from Rec Park the day we play.  GOM for February as follows. Gross went to Jim Fuchs with a nice 69, and the Net winner was Tom Link who won on a card off over John Davis (JD).  2002 GOY trophies were handed out.  Gross winner was Doug Jones, and the Net winner was JD.  The January GOM plaques were presented to Doug Jones, Gross and Tom Conlisk, Net.  Next month starts Daylight Savings Time so we will have a 9-hole tournament on meeting night day.  The Pro Shop will have a manila envelope for you to sign up and put your $5 entry fee in.  You will turn in your card for the front nine, take half of your handicap taking half of your handicap from the tees you played.  You can play at any time of the day for this tournament, so long as you play with another member, and from at least the white stones.

Rich Dennison – Putting Contest: Rich will have a putting course set up for us to test our accuracy skills starting next month before the meeting.  Dudley will be at the putting green outside of the tent running the game from 5:00 to 6:30.

Immediate Past President Greg O’Brien – Hole-In-One Fund: The kitty for this fund is now up to $808.  Anyone playing this Sunday who is not in the insurance fund should be sure to get in.

Pres. Livingstone noted that we have a serious concern that are times when members play but don’t post all the rounds they play.  The Handicap Committee chose a random date starting sheet from the clubhouse and checked members who played that day and checked to ensure they posted.  The members who did not post that day have been notified via a letter from Jerry Leininger.

Jerry Leininger – Handicap: The Board of Directors will implement a policy concerning the problem.  You must post scores played within 24 hours of ending that round.  If you are not able to post for any reason call Jerry, Don Russell, or Dick Scoville to get this score recorded.  We are following a policy of where if you are found in violation of following the posting requirement 3 times in a 6-month period you will be suspended from all club activities.  More information on the complete process will be posted on all of the available places, including on our website.

Tom Link – Tournaments: February tournament went fairly well.  We still seem to be having a problem with getting off of the first fairway and moving along.  We finished between 5:00 and 5:15 very fortunate to get the last group in before darkness set in.  The March tournament will be a 5-some Reverse Waltz, 3-2-1, 3-2-1, …  Our tee times are from 6:00 to 12:45.  Tom has a few singles openings available.  See him if you want to play.  Tom also uses the computer-printed scorecards for our home tournaments.  If anyone falls out of your group, or you have any changes please call him to advise.  The April tourney will be a 5-some where we score the 3 best balls on the par 4 holes, and the 2 best balls on the par 3 and par 5 holes.  May is our Member-Member.  Entry forms will be on the website starting next week.  We have some specials added on for the Member-Member tournament.  To compete for prizes members will have to have played in at least 3 club tournaments in the last year.  Our winners will be sponsored in a 4-ball event.  These teammates’ handicaps have to be within 5 strokes of each other to qualify.  Tom called 20 names to start the April tournament sign ups.

Old Business: There was none.

New Business – Larry Simpson took the podium.  Larry is affiliated with Mesa Verde C.C. and an annual tournament that they hold that is hosted by Coors.  He has authorization to fill openings that are available.  The cost will be $275 which includes everything, lunch, golf, cart, surf and turf dinner afterward, and l of the Coors light on the course that you want.  The field is 144.  It is always a real fun day.  You will play the round in approximately 4 hours, that is hard to believe but you will.  The date is Monday March 24, 2003.  Get a hold of Larry if you are interested.

Unfortunately our March Tournament was rained out.  We received over 3.5 inches of rain in a 24 hour period on Saturday prior to our scheduled Tournament on Sunday.  When we arrived at the course on Sunday it was still raining.  We took a cart out on the course and came to the decision that it was not playable when the tournament was due to begin.  For those of you that have paid your fees I will be giving credit for future Tournaments held at El Dorado this year.  Please use the credit coupon in this newsletter to assist me in the distribution.

There are a few times available after 12:00 for our April Tournament and most often there are cancellations, contact me to get on the waiting list and I will attempt to place you in a group.  The Format of the Tournament will be 3 best balls on the Four Pars and 2 best balls on the 3 & 5 Pars.

We are starting to take sign ups for our Member/Member on May 17th & 18th.  The entry fee is $80.00 per member which includes 2 days of Golf, a Friday night pairings party, and hors d’oeuvre both Saturday and Sunday afternoon.  This is one our most popular Tournaments, get your application in early.  If you need to play early or late please indicate that on your application and I will do my best to accommodate you.  The entry forms will be posted on the Website and in this newsletter.

I would like to thank the members for your attention when I presented the Posting Policy at last months meeting. From the reaction, it looks like the membership also is serious about posting all your scores. I have received some phone calls this month asking me to post scores that were not posted for one reason or another, that fine. Remember if the computer at the course you played is not working, you forgot to post for any  reason , all you need to do is one of the following:

  1. 1.     Drop your score card in the slotted drawer next to the Computer. Please mark on it “ PLEASE POST”. Include the course you played, date, tees played, adjusted score, and sign and have the card attested. Make sure to include your SCGA membership number.
  2. 2.     Contact any one of the Handicap Committee and give us the same information as above and we’ll see it gets posted for you. My E mail address is jlroca@earthlink.net and E mails work great for this purpose.
  3. 3.     Bring your away score cards back to El Dorado to be posted. Make sure you include all the information as in number 1 above.

Here are a few interesting facts according to the USGA Handicap Research Team ………

  1. ·        The average player is expected to play to his course handicap or better only about 25 % of the time
  2. ·        The player averages  three strokes higher than his course handicap.
  3. ·        The players best score in 20 should be only 2 strokes better than his course handicap.

Course Handicap is the number of handicap strokes a player receives from a specific set of tees at he course being played.

I just returned from attending a three-day rules seminar given jointly by the PGA and USGA. Most attendees were rules officials, committeemen, or other officials of various golf associations. There were also various PGA club professionals in attendance.

The seminar consisted of going over each rule in The Rules of Golf along with each definition. The seminar was presented by Trey Holland of the USGA, and David Price of the PGA. The seminar was tedious at times, but in the long run very informative.

For you Saturday team play members that are playing four ball matches see if you know the answer to these questions:

1. Player A and Player B are playing a match. Player A hits his tee shot in the fairway and Player B hits his tee shot into tall rough on the side of the fairway. While Player B begins searching for his ball Player A, who was not away, hits his second shot to the green. After searching for several minutes Player B asks Player A to keep searching for his ball while he returns to the tee to play a provisional ball. Player B then hits a second ball from the tee, Player A finds a ball within 5 minutes of the time when Player B began his original search for his ball, and Player B identifies it as his original ball. Both players then play out the hole in five strokes. Before teeing off on the next hole Player A makes a claim.

What is the ruling?

  1. A.        B wins the hole
  2. B.        A wins the hole
  3. C.        The hole is halved
  4. D.        Both A&B are disqualified.

See Rule 27-2a, and Rule 15-2. In playing a provisional ball one must announce to his opponent his intention to do so, and must play the provisional ball ‘before’ search begins for the original ball. If he fails to do so and plays another ball, such ball becomes the ball in play under penalty of stroke and distance. Another interpretation would be as Player B’s ball was found within five minutes, and he had not properly played a provisional ball, under Rule 15-2 he had played a wrong ball resulting in loss of hole. The Answer is B.

2. A and B are playing a match. On a par three hole B tees off. A then asks B what club he used. B replies that he used a five iron. What is the ruling?

  1. A.   B loses the hole.
  2. B.    A loses the hole.
  3. C.   The hole is halved.
  4. D.   Both players are disqualified for agreeing to waive the rules.

As this is match play the answer is B. A loses the hole as soon as he asked B for advice as he at that point incurred a penalty of “loss of hole,” and as the hole was completed at that point in time it is irrelevant if B answered or not.

Commissioner's Report

Well another month has come and gone! The Commissioners meeting was again not real "filled" with new items. The play for the month of February was as expected down due to 6 days of rain. For the month El Dorado was down 15.79% and all the courses combined were down 16.32%. For the year we are down 6.09%. The rounds for the clubs is very much in line. C.I.P. funds are at 875 thousand while the junior golf funds are at 57 thousand. The income for February was 282 thousand, all these are pretty "healthy" figures. 

We had a guest speaker from the company who is putting together the strategic outline for the city of Long Beach. They conducted 500 interviews at the courses as the golfers walked off the 18th Green. They asked questions from price to food and customer service. These interviews are the first step in what will become the new Strategic Plan for the future of Long Beach Golf. 

As the summer approaches the Commissioners will be asked to address the current policy and procedures that are now in place. This will be a very important task and we are all looking forward to the task. F.Y.I.!!! All of the results from the interviews done at our course were very positive except for the food area??? They even asked if they would pay from two dollars to four dollars more to play our course. 65% said they would pay $4.00 more, and 87% said they would ante up $2.00 dollars more. The question was asked, does this mean we are looking at a price increase? The response was no, so don't get excited!!!!. Enough for now.

President's Corner

Well, our activities are going full swing.  The away trip to Soboba Springs was last week and Nick will update us on that at the meeting.  Cairo is to be commended for organizing our Quad Club team, which defeated host Rec Park by a mere half of a point (no thanks to yours truly and his net 81).  I played with the President’s of the other clubs, and am pleased to report that our Club is clearly the most active of the four.  Congrats go out to Lector Orrick for an ace on the 5th hole.  Since this was not a regularly monthly Men’s Club event, Lector doesn’t win our prize fund.

We will again have both the 9-hole and putting tournaments prior to this month’s meeting.  Remember to signup for the 9-hole in the pro shop and return your card by 6:30 p.m. to give Cairo enough time to figure out the winners.  Rich Dennison will be manning the putting tournament from at least 5:30 if not before.

Our April event was conducted in wonderful weather after the dreadful rain that confronted us in March.  Let’s hope that we have great weather for our Member-Member and the pairings party on Friday night.  Tom Link has some fun activities planned for that night, and I hope as many people as possible will clear their calendars and bring their significant others for a great evening.

I will be in Seattle for the NCAA West Regional the night of our monthly meeting, and since our Vice President will be taking signups for June, our Past President Greg O’Brien will chair the meeting.  I will return on the Sunday of the Member-Member…see you there and Good Luck to all.

Meeting Minutes

The monthly meeting was held April 8, 2003 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent.  A measly $6 treated yourself to another fine dinner selection. President Livingstone called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm and led the membership in allegiance to our flag.

Past Presidents in attendance: Tom Conlisk, Richard Scoville, Steve Shure, Ray McElhenney, Mike Montgomery, and Greg O’Brien.

Mr. Tom Burris and Bob Livingstone represented our life membership.

The minutes from the last meeting and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.

We had one new member tonight.  He took the microphone and stated his name, occupation, and presumed handicap. Greg O’Brien took him on the grand tour.

President Bob Livingstone opened to the membership that we have one issue to address.  The Board of Directors is very concerned about handicap, and our members playing to their’ potential.  Team Play has had an individual who has scored 6 rounds of par or better in 8 Team Play rounds.  The Pres. called SCGA to talk with the Rules Committee and Handicap, and Membership to see what our duties are to address this.  The SCGA informed Bob that they are already in process of adjusting this person’s handicap.  Ability is the key component for handicap.  We have lowered his index from 4.4 to 3.3 for all of our events.  The SCGA informed Bob that they were lowering him to 1.8.  The SCGA is monitoring Team Play scores.  Using the last 20 scores anytime a player shoots net 69 or better a certain number of times.  At this point the SCGA has frozen 32 players, and lowered 6 more.  Pres. Livy noted that it is the right of the membership by our By Laws to overturn any action of the ‘Board.  Bob suggested for anyone who has any questions to see any member of the Handicap Chairman, either himself, Jerry Leininger, Don Russell, or Dick Scoville after the meeting.  Billy Johnson asked what our formula was for determining the handicap.  Bill feels we need to do all of the members, not just one.  Ruben Gonzales piped in that his opponent shot a net 64.

Team Play: Jim Baber sent apologies for his not being able to make the meeting.  Taking the stand, and expressing Jim’s and the team’s thoughts was our great guy co-captain John Davis.  Thanks sent to Tony, Jorge, and entire Pro Shop staff for all year and to Becky and her team for all of their efforts. Mark Miller was thanked for doing an excellent job with supporting Team Play on our website.  We lost the quarterfinals to Industry Hills and wish them the best of luck.  Jim relayed that he enjoyed being the team captain in representing our club.  JD individually recognized the members of this year’s team by having them stand up one by one.  A big hand was given to them for a job well done.  Bob noted that since 1969 there has only been 2 teams that have done as well as our team did this year.

Rick Evans started the drawing activities with calling for the “Winner” marked tickets.  That ticket won one member $10 and is still live for prize drawings through the night.

Ray McElhenney - Golf Commissioner: Sort of boring this month.  No outside tournaments are scheduled for this month.  The rain caused the number of rounds to be down.  There is an outside company that interviewed approximately 500 people at Long Beach courses this year.  Our course rated 90% on everything available at the course.  $110,000 was the average home income of those interviewed.  The committee will tell the City what they feel will be the best way to go in the future.

Nick Zamora – Entertainment: We just played Los Serranos and the Gross team had 9 birdies, 6 of which held up!  That was Mel Collins, Doug Jones, Kevin Orr, and Greg Lester.  Soboba Springs bus leaves at 5:30 am from here at El Dorado.  You’ll enjoy movies, drinks, etc on the way over to the course and back.  We are playing a shotgun start at 8:00 am.  June 7 will be a drive trip to Fallbrook.  If you have a course that you’d like to go to give Nick some insight.  Redhawk received immediate support.

Jorge Badel, El Dorado Golf Pro: Jorge needed to see if there is interest in supporting the Buick Open in our Club.  They play 4-man teams with a handicap format to follow.  Entry fee is $72, which gets you the green fee, a dozen Strata balls and $50 if you test-drive a new Buick at one of the local Buick dealers.  1 team in every 7 will advance, however 13 teams would only get 1 spot, we’ll need the 14th team.  Thursday seemed the best for us to try to play.  It looked as if about 70% of the members present showed interest.  Jorge will keep us informed.  Handicap is based on a point system such as 3.1 to 5.7 = -1, 5.8 to 8.3 = 0, 8.4 to 11.0 = +1, etc…  If we have 2 teams go on one will be gross and one will be net.  Not sure if it is gross or net with only 1 going on but Jorge will find out.  If you go on to the So. Cal. Regional you go with a golf professional.  Jorge is the only pro at El Do so we will have to pick a local PGA pro for the second team.  Tom Conlisk recommended Tiger Woods.  That got a tremendous amount of backing.  Jorge noted he had to presently be working at a local course.  Qualification will be the last 2 weeks of May and the first of June.

Mike Marmer – Rules: Mike attended a USGA/PGA Rules seminar where they went over every rule line by line, including the definition.  Overall the bottom line is play your ball as it is, as you find it.  One idea was to make the service road an integral part of the golf course, no relief.  We now have our new hard card with all of our local rules, hazards, obstruction, etc.  Pick one up for your bag at the tournament.  Pres. Livy noted that it is common for clubs to present these to the membership.

Rick Evans – Special Events: We will do skins this week plus Amen Corner (8,9,10), and circles on the par 3, and circles for a second shot.  Rick pulled a raffle ticket and an El Dorado hat went to Lowell Overturf.

Jerry Leininger – Handicap: Jerry expressed that information needs to be to him NLT the 20th of each month.  He has received several calls on the posting of scores.  Please be sure to post within 24 hours of playing.  If the course is closed when you finish either stop by the next day or call him with the information.  If you are playing on a Friday and the Women’s Club has the computer, fill out the card with your signature, an attest, the date, and circle the tee box you played and place it in the drawer.  Jerry has advised some new members on the concept of index and handicap and how to make the conversion.  This Sunday we are to post our own scores.  Lastly, the ‘Board feels that Team Play scores indicate play as tournament level.  Team Play scores will now be considered “T” scores, with adjustments up or down as required.  Quite a lot of discussion followed this.  Some had a problem with adjusting only 1 player for this Sunday’s tournament and not all of the Team Play members.  Billj Johnson referred to this action as being a witch-hunt, which was immediately negated.

Don Russell- New Editor: Nothing to report.

Cairo Piercy – Quad Club and GOM: Held the first 9-hole event for the season tonight.  Everyone played from the white tees.  From now on you can play from either the white or blue plates, not the tees.  Take half of your 18-hole handicap, not your 9 hole handicap.  3rd place went to Greg Lester w/ $20, $30 and 2nd place went to Eric Sasaki, while Al Ostberg cleaned up and grab $40 with the victory.  Only had 2 cards for Gross and 2 for net GOM this month.  Mike Marmer turned in both of the gross cards and his 69 held up.  Chris Benes won the net while incurring a penalty for a 64.  This was Chris’s lifetime best round.  Quad Club is Saturday April 26 at Rec Park.  Tee times are from 7:00am to 12 Noon.  We have 40 players with the Pros and the Presidents.  We will be playing to April current index.  Teams will be grouped according to relative handicap.  Times will be posted on the website as early as April 16.  If you have to cancel be sure to call him so a replacement can be recruited.  He needs the $32 entry fee tonight as the fees have to be paid this week.  If you choose to ride that $12 will be collected at Rec Park.

Rich Dennison – Putting Contest: Held the first Putting Contest tonight.  He asked the players what they wanted to do.  Several ideas came forward.  Tonight was an “Aces Only” event.  7 players made 3 winning an $11 each.  Dudley noted that Larry Grant spent $9 in that effort (the way I see it is he made $2).

Tom Link – Tournaments: February tournament went fairly well.  The April tournament is pretty much full.  We have times from 6:09 ‘til 12:30 with the format being a 5-some using the 3 best balls on the par 4 holes, and the 2 best balls on the par 3 and 5.  The Member-Member tournament will have Hors d’oeuvres for both days.  The tent will be set up for Friday night Saturday and Sunday.  We will have tables for playing cards.  Sign up for the tournament now.

Old Business: There was none.

 Membership drawing was for $80.  The number of Neville Cordeaux was pulled.  Orville was not at present.  Next month it will be for $90.

Whew! We escaped the Month of April without rain. The forecast for the day was not bright but the power of positive thinking won out. The "Gross" was won by Jon Burroughs, John Dymon, Joe Epson, Mike Marmer and John Shellenberger, Congratulations. The turnout was excellent and we ran very close to our starting times all day. Thanks to all that participated.

Our Member-Member Tournament is May 17th and 18th, it is one our most popular Tournaments of the year. We are taking as many new members as possible but to be eligible to win you must have played in at least three club events within the last year. This Tournament will be divided into three flights "A", "B", and "C" determined by combining the handicaps of the two players. In addition to net prizes in the flights we will pay one gross prize. The cut off for entry is May 9th. We will have our traditional pairings party on Friday the 16th starting @ 5:00. This year we will have a "partners" alternate shot chipping and putting contest on Friday. Bring your partner, wives, significant others and join us for a great kickoff to the Tournament.

Our June Tournament will be a "Reverse Waltz". We will hold a drawing for Tee times at our May Meeting, come to the meeting and put together a group or sign up as an individual, we should be able to get everyone in.

I will also be taking sign ups for our traditional "Fathers Day" Tournament to be held on June 15th. This is a fun day for our members and you are welcome to invite anyone that you want. There is no Tournament fee and we have times from 8:15 until 12:00. I will be taking sign ups meeting night in May. If you do sign up, as an individual or a group, the green fees can be paid at the meeting or I will accept payment within two weeks. The Men’s Club is responsible for these times. If we do not use them we must turn them back to American Golf.

Commissioner's Report

Well another month has come and gone. This months Commissioners meeting was again not real eventful. On a sad note the Woman's Golf Commissioner from Skylinks, Bev Kind passed away earlier this month. Bev had been on the board for 3 years. Robin Bellamy will sit in for Bev until they have an election.

The rounds of play for the month of March were still down slightly at -5.35%. The year to date rounds at our course are down -5.8%. For all the courses for March the rounds were down -3.09% and the year to date totals are down -5.37%. The revenues are still in decent shape. For all the courses year to date there is over 1 million in total revenue. This number includes everything from range balls to green fees, plus restaurant earnings. The C.I.P. fund is over 936 thousand. Again this account remains dormant until the Skylinks Project gets underway? If that ever happens? Our hours of play are very much in line. I asked at the meeting if we lost the hours from our rained out February event. Terry Lortz will look into that. Even if we do not lose them, the question is when would we be able to use them??? There was one outside Tournament booked at our course for Friday May 16th at 1: 30 in the afternoon. This certainly should not effect anyone? On the other hand an outside event was turned down for our course. They were asking for Sunday December 7th at 9:30 A.M.. The commissioners, again voted this one down.

The Strategic Plan for the future of golf in Long Beach is in the first stages.  Once the City has looked at the initial outline, we the Commissioners will take on some tasks and assist in developing this Plan. Enough for now. See you at our next meeting.

President's Corner

I was able to get back from Seattle in time for the second round of the Member-Member, and it appears to have been a smashing success.  Tom Link will surely go into greater detail, but this event was successful because of many efforts from not just our Club and its members, but from the various golf course staffs as well.  Thanks and congratulations to all involved, or who participated (or who had a Hole in One!).

The busy months continue, as the away trip to Fallbrook will have been completed by meeting night, and we still have the 9-hole and putting tournaments, the Father’s Day Tournament (and that is the loosest use of that word you will ever see) and our monthly tournament, so make sure you come to the General Meeting for more info on all of these events.

The Long Beach Golf Festival is underway, with El Dorado hosting the Long Beach Match Play this month.  Many of our members participate in one or more of the Festival events, and I wish good luck to all who do.  If you would like to play in, or volunteer for, any of the LBGF events, call Bob Chaffee at (562) 494-2850.  On the topic of the Golf Festival and the Long Beach Open, you are reminded that our Club is the only group to have been a Hole Sponsor every year of the tournament.  We raise the money for this sponsorship by selling raffle tickets for 3 spots in the Pro-Am.  All members of the Board have these tickets, so buy some…you never know, you may win!  If we can sell our allotment by meeting night, we will have the drawing this month, if not, we will have the drawing at the July meeting.

We are only three months away from beginning our election process for 2004.  If you are interested in running for an office, or being considered for an appointed position, please contact me or any other member of the Board for more information.  Our Club is only as good as the people who take an active roll in it, so I encourage you to seriously consider doing this.

PGA pro Jorge Badel spoke about the Buick Scramble.  It will be held June 12th, with tee times running from 10am to Noon.  The cost is $72 per player, which includes green fee, tournament fee and a dozen golf balls.  He handed out a rules sheet.  The winning team(s) will play July 28th in a southern California district final.

Ray McElhenney - Golf Commission: had no report.  See his article in the May newsletter.

Jerry Leininger - Handicap: Spoke about posting scores for the member-member.  On Saturday, post your own score as a regular round.  Not a tournament round.  On Sunday, post your own score as a tournament round.

Rick Evans - Special Events: noted that the meeting night raffles have been well supported.  He asked that members pay attention to the handicap divisions when signing up for special events.  Some have been putting their names in the wrong handicap division.  He also asked that members turn in skins and amen-corner type special events to the directors at the scoring table when their round is finished.

Nick Zamora - Entertainment: thanked Paul Wildy for bringing sandwiches on the Soboba bus trip.  He announced the Soboba results.  He noted that if a course is open, you must play no matter what the weather.  If you don’t show up, you lose your entry fee.

Mike Marmer - Rules: reiterated his newsletter article which  discussed later hazard dropping options.

Cairo Piercy - Director: announced the April GOM winners.  Gross – John Dymon, 72.  Net – Charlie Baker, 65.  He also announced the nine-hole winners.  Terry Fulford was 1st.

Rich Dennison - Director: announced the putting contest winners.  Mike McMahon was 1st.  Rich will discuss the El Dorado Cup at the June meeting.

Tom Link - Tournament: announced the pairings party on Friday will have a partner’s alternate-shot chip and putt contest.  Activities will start at 5pm.  Jerry Leininger will supply hors d’oeuvres on Saturday from 1 to 5 pm.  There are still times available for Father’s Day.

The weather was great and I hope everyone enjoyed this years Member/Member Tournament.  Special thanks to Jerry Leininger for his food contribution this year.  For those of you that do not know he supplied all of the hors d’oeuvres for Saturday & Sunday.  Another special thank you to Steve Shure for organizing the horse race on Friday.  It is a lot of work and greatly appreciated.

For those of you that did not attend the Friday evenings festivities we had a combination chipping and putting contest that everyone seemed to really enjoy.  We may have to make this a regular part of the tournament. 

This years winners in our Gross Division were Jim Fuchs and Ted Burroughs with a fine combined score of 209. “A” Flight winners (repeating from last year) were Rod and Bob Austin with an unbelievable score of 193.  This bears some watching! “B” Flight winners were Steve Moore and Steve Raywald with a combined score of 201.   “C” Flight was taken by Greg Charrier and Eric Sasaki with a fine 197.  By the way, Par is 216!

I am still taking entry’s for our June Tournament.  This year we are playing a 5 Man Reverse Waltz, Three best Ball.  If you are interested in playing please send me an E-Mail, put an application in the Men’s Club Box or call me at home.

Our next Tournament is our Member-Guest and we will not have a sign up at the meeting.  Please fill out the enclosed application and get it in early.

Speed of play remains an issue.  We need to play in 5 hours or less.  If you sign up for an early time you need to be able to complete your round in 4 ½ or less to enable the later groups to have a good pace of play.  It is not important where the group is that is behind yours.  It is important that you play each hole in approximately 15 minutes. We will be monitoring this and will be handing out penalty strokes to teams that are not keeping pace.

Some of you may have seen Hank Kuenhe take what appeared to be an unusual drop on the 18th hole of the Houston Open. Hank drove his ball into a lateral water hazard on the left side of the fairway. Instead of taking two club lengths relief from the last place the ball crossed the hazard, he crossed the hazard to the opposite side to take relief. He did this as had he dropped on the side where the ball entered he would have had to drop the ball on the bank which would have resulted in lie that would have required a baseball type swing.

Rule 26-I (c) provides that as an additional option, only if the ball crossed the margin of a lateral water hazard, the ball may be dropped on a point on the opposite margin of the water hazard equidistant from the hole.

Some of you may keep this in mind when playing the 13th hole if your drop would require you to be blocked out by the trees near the front of the water hazard. You may go over the 11th hole and take relief at that point, as long as you are equidistant from the hole.

Q. A player hit a ball into a lateral water hazard. He wished to take relief on the opposite margin of the hazard, equidistant from the hole. However, the opposite margin was marked with a yellow line as a water hazard. The player dropped on the opposite margin and hit his shot. Did he incur a penalty?

A. No. Relief is determined according to the status of the hazard at the point where the ball last crossed the hazard margin.

Commissioner's Report

Well this months meeting had a little more 'flare' to it. Tom Tucker from Pultz Marketing presented an hour long overview of the findings their company discovered from their research. I will not be able to give you all of their findings but I will touch on several topics. These findings were gathered from interviews and comparing our golf operations to 10 comparable courses in the area. First and foremost Long Beach Golf was and is a great bargain! The costs were found to be higher at almost all the other comparable courses. Our reservation system is very antiquated!! 65% of the play at our courses is by non-residents. Our pace of play, that is to say all of the courses, received a very low score! You think!!! Just look at how long it takes to play our tournaments. The outside tournament play is not following the policy and procedures manual?? The commissioners represent their clubs, and not the general public. Lastly our Jr. Golf program is outstanding. Keep in mind these findings are being presented to the city. They will look at them and then make some suggestions on what direction to take. The Commissioners will be asked to take on those special projects I have spoken about. Bottom line is the City wants to create a new Vision and Statement for the future of Long Beach Golf.  The rounds of golf for the month of April remain down 6.14% for all courses, and El Dorado was down 9.27%. Year to date we are down 6.83% while all the courses are down 5.58%. As I have stated several times the C.I.P. funds are basically the first payment towards the bond for the Skylinks project.

As I write this article the project is still a go for the first part of October 2003??? The bids are in and one has been accepted. They did not give us any real details at the meeting but it appears everything is moving forward in a very positive fashion.

There were four nominees for our Long Beach Hall of Fame. The names I cannot reveal, but these folks will be inducted on July 27th at the conclusion of the Long Beach Open.

Our club hours are in line. The revenue generated by the courses remains fine. For the year the courses have combined for a total of over 1 million in revenue, in which 325 thousand goes directly to the city. One last topic that was brought up for consideration. The president of Little Rec has requested for reinstatement for 4 away tournaments for his Men's Club. Apparently way back when Little Rec played a tournament at Big Rec, El Dorado and Skylinks. For some reason they lost those events? Now Bill Barefield has requested this be reinstated. His request was turned over to the Policy and Procedures sub committee. Well enough for now. I will see you at the next general meeting.

Well the Long Beach Golf Festival reaches fever pitch in July, which means our course will be closed a few weekend days this month...check out the posted schedule at the course while making your golfing plans. In July we have our Member-Guest, and hopefully you will be proud to bring a guest to our fine course…and then get them to join the Club! If you have any ideas for this event, please let a member of the Board know. July is also the last chance to sign up for The El Dorado Cup (formerly the flights). This is a great event—played entirely at match play—and you need to see Rich Dennison to play.

There are some El Dorado ties to the 2003 Long Beach Golf Hall of Fame inductees. Shirley Johnston is a long-time member of the El Do Women’s Club, Monty Blodgett was our head pro in the mid to late 70s and Bud Lorbeer was the pro shop and restaurant concessionaire from when Monty left until American Golf took over. I encourage you to come to the induction ceremonies on the Sunday of the Long Beach Open. Speaking of the Open we will have our drawing for three spots in the LBO Pro Am at the General Meeting…I think our team has won two or three times in the past several years, and anyone who has ever played will tell you how much fun it is. Buy those tickets!

Finally, it has been a longstanding policy of the Club to provide a stipend to each member of Board to thank them for their yearly service. Historically, the Board has used this stipend to offset the cost of a golfing weekend inviting friends or potential new Board members to come along. This year we went to Barona Ranch Resort near San Diego, and had a great time. On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank the membership for approving this. Come on out to the meeting and win one of those Pro Am spots!

Meeting Minutes

The monthly meeting was held June 10, 2003 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent.  Your $6 got you a serving of flavorful spaghetti with meatballs and sauce on the side, with veggies and bread. President Livingstone called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. and led the membership in allegiance to our flag.

Once again, Mr. Tom Burris and Bob Livingstone represented our life membership.

Pres. Livingstone recognized Jim McCullough on donating a keg of beer for the meeting attendees, as well as picking up a hefty bar tab following his hole-in-one at the member-Member tournament.  Jim aced the third hole playing at 165 yards.  The hole-in-one insurance was a nice prize.  Bob then apologized to Jim Fuchs as he had noted in the newsletter that Dick Scoville covered the minutes of the May meeting.

The minutes from the last meeting and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.

Two new members introduced themselves and went on the informative tour with Greg O’Brien.

Rick Evans called for the red and blue raffle tickets that were sold to come forward for the cash reward.  Al Reinking had the blue one, while Vern Herzberg had the red.  A raffle ticket was drawn for an El Dorado hat and a range card.

Jim Baber took the stand to present the trophy that was made, that recognized all of this year’s Saturday Team Play members to the Board of Directors and the Club, and thanked everyone for the support they were given this year.  Pres. Livy noted that it will be out up in the bar / restaurant area.

Committee Reports:

Ray McElhenney - Golf Commissioner: He attended the first meeting of the year that had any activity.  They had people from the group that was doing the Long Beach golf survey at the meeting.  He noted that the survey reflects that golf in Long Beach is a bargain, but does not mean to say that a price increase is imminent.  The City wants Long Beach golf to be good and to continue being so.  They felt that the club commissioners only represented their clubs and not the general public, but hey that’s who elected them to the Commission.  The Skylinks project will start in October of this year.  They have pretty much accepted a $5,M bid.  Four people have been chosen to be inducted into this year’s Long Beach Hall of Fame.  The amount of play is fine.  The CIP fund has been frozen in light of what was to be done at Skylinks.  Little Rec wants to have three away tournaments, one each at El Dorado, Skylinks, and Big Rec.  Recommendations to the City have been made.  Pres. Livy advised that they have been notified of trees that need to be trimmed.

Rick Evans – Special Events: Some great shots were made at this year’s Member-Member.  Jim McCullough had a hole-in-one and our Webmaster; Mark Miller got Closest-to-the-Pin for a nice reward as well.  This was nice to see as Mark has been taking care of our website at no cost to the Club.  We also had a Beat-the-Pro event.  Be sure to note if your score beats the Pro so you get included in the payoffs.  Mike Vaughn asked what you are to do if you play before the Pro, 

and don’t know if your score was a winner.  Rick advised for anyone that this happens to, to call him and he will make it good to them.

Mike Marmer – Rules: Mike placed a golf scenario out of the tables for people to figure the score on a hole.  Steve Shure was the only person to come up with the answer of 9, but he could not provide the logic behind the answer so Mike refused to give Steve any prize on his guess.

Nick Zamora – Entertainment: Nick wants someone to win the hole-in-one insurance every month as it seems everyone was having a good time.  Fallbrook was played last weekend.  The Hasselman group won the gross on the 18th hole.  Full results have been posted.  August 2 is our away trip to Trilogy.  Everyone needs to be paid in full before we go.  If you sign up you must get your foursome paid for in the entirety.  If a member misses the round and had not paid they will not be allowed to sign up for any other trips until this outstanding debt is relinquished.  Our September weekender will be held at Singing Hills.  Get your groups together for that as it will be a lot of fun.

Another raffle ticket was drawn, this time for some head covers.

Rich Dennison – Putting Contest: Had $77 in the count-them-all event tonight that 7 people tied on getting $11 each.  The El Dorado Cup is fast coming up.  It is a match play event that is flighted.  You need to sign up and get your $10 entry fee in ASAP.  You will see the breakdown and make arrangements with them to play your match.  The play starts in August.  You will play a new opponent each month so long as you stay alive.

Cairo Piercy – 9-Hole and GOM: The 9-hole tourney went well.  Winners were as follows.  1st place and $70 went to Scott Paul with a 36-3 – 33.  2nd and $40 went to Tony Jimenez with his 33 ½, and $30 for 3rd was Terry Fulford with a 34.  G.O.M. for May winners were Net Bob Austin (75-14 = 61) and Gross Ted Burrows with a real nice 68.  Charlie Baker picked up his plaque for the April net prize.

Newsletter Editor – Don Russell: Don had nothing to add.

Tom Link – Tournaments: The Member-Member tournament was well attended.  After the event was over Tom looked up Hors d’oeuvres in the dictionary and found that it does not mean “all you can eat”.  We ran out of food and those who finished late got nothing.  The Father’s Day tourney has openings at $26 per player as there is no prize fund, just golf to have fun.  The July tournament is the Member-Guest.  Entry forms are in the newsletter and the cost is $75.

Jerry Leininger – Handicap: Thanked everyone for posting the Member-Member.  Only 7 players forgot, that is a big improvement.  Jerry noted that when you look at the tournament index list the number that is listed is the handicap you get from the blue tees at El Dorado, it is not an index.  If it says 9, you are a 9 from the blues.

Greg O’Brien – Hole-In-One Insurance: Need to re-ante your $3 insurance fee.  If during a tournament there is more than one ace by insured players the pool will be evenly divided between those players.  This is highly unlikely, but if it happens those players will all be compensated.  Perhaps if we have two, we can have a keg of Coors Light and a keg of Budweiser.

Old business – None

New Business – Pres. Livy noted that Jorge Badel is playing in the Long Beach Open, and that in the past the Club has paid the entry fee for our course pro which is $600.  Steve Shure noted that he would like to see us do this, but only on a voluntary basis, such as collecting money at the next tournament from the members and then making up any balance from the general fund.  Steve expressed this concern as he has heard how we are close to being just at our numbers for this year’s budget.  Pres. Livy noted that we will have a donation fund set up at the first tee for the June 28 home tournament.  Jorge is a very active Pro at our club who is always available for rules, Team Play, and other matters.

Meeting adjourned.

 Rick Evans conducted the raffle.  Pres. Livy pulled the tickets.  We gave away a lot of prizes that included cash, head covers, hats, golf balls, range cards, and more.  Top prize was a ticket for a threesome at Lakewood C.C. that was won by Vern Herzberg. 

Membership drawing was for $100.  The number of Mike Drew was pulled.  Barney was not at the meeting.  Next month it will be for $110.

Thanks to all of you that played in the this years June Tournament.  The pace of  play was much better.  The early groups were able to play in less than 4 ½ hours. Our group did not tee off until 11:26 and we finished at 4:30.  Thanks again for your efforts. First place gross was won by Paul, Andy & Chris Demotropolis, Paul Landreaux and Bob Rogers with a fine score of 141.  The results for all of the Flights are listed in this Newsletter.

We are still taking entry’s for the July Member Guest.  If you would like to enter please fill out an entry Blank and include your partners SCGA#.  This is a one day event and the cost is $75.00 per team.

I have enclosed an entry form for our August Partner-Partner Tournament.  This is a two day event and the cost is $150.00 per Team.  The Format this year will be: First Day Front nine-Cross over.

On the par three holes each player will hit a tee shot, the best shot will be selected and you will play alternate shot from that point until the ball is holed.  On the par Four holes each player will hit a tee shot, you will then cross over and hit your partners drive and he will hit your drive.  At that point you will select the best shot and play one ball (alternate shot) until the ball is holed.

On par fives each player will hit a drive, cross over and hit your partners ball and on the third shot cross back over and hit your third shot, from that point one ball will be selected and you will alternate until the ball is holed.  On the back nine we will play alternate shot.  One person will tee off on the even holes and one person will tee off on the odd holes. 

Sundays Format will be Partner Best ball on the front side and Aggregate on the back.  Sign up early, it  should be a lot of fun.

Thanks to everyone who supported the Long Beach Open either by buying raffle tickets, watching or volunteering (I know Rick Evens, John Davis and Jerry Leininger helped fill divots, and others like Ken Louie and Alan Reinking kept their string of volunteer years in tact—if there are others I apologize for not mentioning you, but thanks anyway). 

Rich Dennison has posted the pairings for the El Dorado Cup (formerly The Flights) and some matches have already been played.  As a reminder, you are responsible for contacting your opponent and setting up your match.  As an absolute last resort, if you have been unable to get a starting time on your own, you may contact the General Manager and he will attempt to arrange a weekend afternoon starting time for you. 

As Tom Link will cover in his article, our Club Championship and Flight Championships will take place in September.  We have tried this flighted, stroke play format for several years, and feel this is the make or break year.  If we do not get sufficient participation, we will have to seriously consider whether or not we continue this format. 

At the September General Meeting, Greg O’Brien, as Chair of the Nominating Committee, will announce a slate of the individuals interested in running for the elected positions on the Board of Directors.  If you are interested in being one of these people, please contact Greg.  In October, there will be a chance for additional nominations from the floor, and the election will take place at the November General Meeting.

Remember to sign up for the weekender – a return to The Old Favorite, Singing Hills – and come to the meeting for Ricky Evans’ Fabulous Raffle.

GOOD PLAYING

Steve Friend made the cut in the Long Beach Men’s City Championship (“one for the old guys”, he said) shooting 1 over par for three rounds, while Jim McCullough, Phil Dauk and Jon Monat made the cut in their respective flights.  Mel Collins and Mike Marmer qualified for the SCGA Mid-Amateur Championship, which will be played later this month at Mesa Verde CC.  Congratulations and good luck!

Jerry Leininger – Handicap: Can you believe it? Jerry didn’t have anything to comment on tonight either.

 Nick Zamora – Entertainment: On August 2nd we are playing Trilogy.  Nick has 80 spots reserved, and he has just a few spots available.  Tee times will be from 8:30 to 11:00.  Nick needs the $80 entry fee paid to him ASAP as he is going out of town this weekend for two weeks.  The weekender at Singing Hills is in September.  We will have a practice round on Friday probably with a partner better-ball blind draw format.  Saturday will be better ball and Sunday will play as an aggregate.  Towards the end of the year we’ll be going to Rancho California,

Rick Evans – Special Events: Some great shots were made at this year’s Member-Member.  Jim McCullough had a hole-in-one and our Webmaster; Mark Miller got Closest-to-the-Pin for a nice reward as well.  This was nice to see as Mark has been taking care of our website at no cost to the Club.  We also had a Beat-the-Pro event.  Be sure to note if your score beats the Pro so you get included in the payoffs.  Mike Vaughn asked what you are to do if you play before the Pro, 

Mike Marmer – Rules: Mike marshaled during the last tournament.  He had to stop 4 groups from illegally dropping on the #7 lake.  This is not a lateral; it is a water hazard.  To properly place your ball you need to drop from the point you hit your shot and point the ball entered the hazard, keeping the hazard between you and the hole. Mike fielded several questions on different scenarios.  If no red line is present it is always a water hazard, not a lateral.

Don Russell – News Editor: Don had nothing to comment on tonight.

Rick drew another raffle ticket for a hat and sleeve of Titleist.  Mitch Caban claimed this prize.

Cairo Piercy – 9-Hole and GOM: Tom Baker and Brian Ball tied for 3rd in the 9-hole tourney, Terry Fulford came in 2nd, while John Lynch carded a net 29 ½ to take the gold.  Cairo had several card submitted for the June Net G.O.M.  The winner was Tim “Slammer” Yee with a fine 85 – 25 for a 60!  Three cards turned in for Gross.  Steve Friend and Larry Grant shot smooth 73’s while Don Pichovich rolled in with an even par 72.

Rich Dennison – Putting Contest: Did “Aces Only” tonight.  (3) Members tied with 5, while (2) more tied with 4.  El Dorado Cup signups need to be made soon.  The matches will start in August.

Tom Link – Tournaments: Tom thanked everyone for their efforts in picking up the pace of play.  He now has over 160 signed up for the Member-Guest, and has a few spots still available.  He is taking signups for the Partner-Partner.  There will be four different formats for the four 9-holes we will play.  He will be mixing it up, have a lot of fun.  Think about the Club Championship in September.  The first day will be a 3-best-ball, which will be part of our monthly tournament.  The Senior Club Championship and Flights will also be included in this compilation of rounds.

Old business – We voted last month for the Club to pick up Jorge Badel’s entry in the Long Beach Open.  Jorge wrote the Club a letter to express his appreciation for our gesture.  As part of that motion we noted that we would be taking donations from the membership to help in this effort.

New Business – The Board of Directors decided to allow new members starting in August or after to join for $70, which does not include the $20 initiation, and wanted to le the Club know what we have done.

We held the drawing for the (3) LB Open Pro-Am spots.  The winners were Ken Louie, Cory Read, and Rob Marchegiano. They will represent El Dorado Men’s Club at the event.

Don Russell pulled the tickets from the raffle barrel and Rick Evans handed out a lot of good prizes, hate, balls, shirts, towels, sand wedge, and cash, plus green fees for Lakewood and Meadowlark.

50-50 drawing had $56, $28 to Eric Sasaki and $28 to Jr. Golf.

Membership drawing tonight was for $110.  Number of Randy Wold was drawn.  Randy was at the meeting earlier but left before the membership drawing.  We have a lot of fun at the meetings.  Be sure to stay until the end as your number may be drawn.  Next month the prize will be $120

What great weather we had for this years Member-Guest.  We had a very good turnout for this years Event, over 180 players.  If you would like to make this a more memorable day for our guests we are open to suggestions.  This years Gross winners were David Spencer and his Guest Ed Wilson, shooting a 2 under score of 106.  Thanks to all of you that participated, everyone seemed to have a good time and the course was in great shape.  The results for all of the Flights are listed in the Newsletter.

Our next Tournament is the Partner-Partner.  I will  be taking sign ups through August 9th.  Get your application in ASAP.  The total is $150.00 per team.  If you do not have a partner, give me a call or send me an E-Mail and I will do my best to match you up.

We are combining our September Tournament with the Club Championships. The First Day (September 6th ) will be a fivesome event, 3 best ball. The individual scores will also count as the first round in the Championship.  We will have an open championship, Senior’s Division (50 and over) and five different Flights.  If you are 50 and over and wish to compete in the Championship Flight, add $20.00 to your entry Fee.  You will not be able to compete in the Senior Division and the Flights Championship!!  The $120.00 entry fee includes 3 days of Golf (September 6,7 and 13th) along with all Tournament Fees.

The Championship Flight will be 72 holes, if you make the cut for the final day you will be responsible for your Green Fees on Sunday the 14th.

If you want to form a group for September 6th please indicate that on you entry.  There will be a drawing at the August Men’s Club meeting for Tee time in September, be there and sign up.

President's Corner

Well, summer is winding down, but our activities are heating up!  The El Dorado Cup is in full swing, with four full flights of 16 players.  Hopefully all of the first round matches have been completed by the time you read this.  The Flight Championships will have begun before our meeting night, so hopefully you signed up if you were interested in playing…Tom Link will have more about this at the meeting.  Team Play “qualifying” begins shortly, and sign-up information is posted at the course…this is arguably the most popular activity in the Club, so don’t miss out.

The golf course was in great shape for our Partner-Partner Tournament, as Jack walk-mowed and rolled the greens for us.  The course has really been in great shape all summer long, and if you see Jack or one of the members of the maintenance crew, you may want to give him an “atta boy!”

Remember that we are nearing election time.  Nominating Committee Chairman Greg O’Brien is seeking interested members to be announced as part of the Slate of Candidates at this month’s meeting.  If you have any questions about serving on the Board in either an elected or appointed capacity, please contact any of the members of the Board.

In closing, I encourage you to come to the meeting.  Not only does Rick Evans tear up hundreds of tickets for the wonderful raffle prizes, but there is great camaraderie and the chance to win the membership drawing of something like $130.  Hope to see you there.

Meeting Minutes

The monthly meeting was held August 12, 2003 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent.  3 rounds on Rich Dennison’s putting course kept me outside and I missed “The $6 Meal”, but I know it was good.  President Livingstone called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. and led membership in allegiance to our flag.

Past Presidents in attendance: Tom Conlisk, Richard Scoville, Steve Shure, Don Marmion, Ray McElhenney, Mike Montgomery, and Greg O’Brien.

Once again, Mr. Tom Burris and Bob Livingstone represented our life membership.

Pres. Livingstone recognized Dave Young as being in attendance.  Dave served on the Board of Directors before he moved to Seattle.  It was good to see you Dave.

The minutes from the last meeting and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.

We had one new member tonight who introduced himself. He told us his name, occupation, and desire to establish a handicap, and went on the tour with Greg O’Brien.

Team Play – Jim Baber noted that last year’s Saturday team got to the quarterfinals.  Jim thanked Pres. Livingstone and the Board of Directors for their selecting him to be the Team Captain with John Davis as he his Co-Captain.   There is a sheet posted to sign up for Team Play qualifying rounds.  These will start on October 26 and be held on 3 consecutive weekends.  Your handicap needs to be 18.4 or less.  To be eligible you must have been a member for 12 months, and have participated in at least 3 Club events during this 12-month period.

Pres. Livy noted that the Club selected to pay Jorge Badel’s entry into the L.B. Open.  Jorge sent a letter back to thank us for the appreciated gesture.  Jorge made the cut and finished the tournament shooting 71, 71, 73, and 72.  Way to go Jorge!

Rick Evans pulled a raffle ticket out of the barrel for $5.  No one claimed the other marked ticket that was drawn.

No one from the Pro Shop was available this evening.

Committee Reports:

Ray McElhenney - Golf Commissioner: Ray had nothing to report tonight.

Handicap:  Pres. Livy presided, as Jerry was not with us tonight. Jim Fuchs wanted to know why the El Dorado Cup was being played at current index and not the tournament index.  Wayne Setinek inquired why the Club Championship was being played at LI and not tournament index.

Nick Zamora – Entertainment: The Trilogy trip is in the books.  It was a nice course, but they still need to finish their clubhouse.  A lot of people participated and a lot of prizes going to a lot of teams.  The weekender is fast coming up.  We are going to Singing Hills and plan to do lots of stuff while we’re down there.  To get in you need to see Nick immediately.  Of course Nick knows that the casino now owns the course, and is just down the road.  Get the money for this one to him ASAP.  In November we’ll be going to SCGA Member’s Course

Cairo Piercy – 9-Hole and GOM: Brian Ball won the 9-hole.  Tom Baker slid a 34 for second while 3rd was a tie between Tom Conlisk and Terry Fulford.  For July GOM, Net went to Billy Johnson (76-14=62), Gross was taken by John Tamney with a 71.  Cairo has been asked about if you are supposed to tee off from the rocks or the plates.  Be sure to play from the plates.  He will put a note about this in the newsletter.  In the past we have always used the plates.

Rick Evans called a couple more raffle prizes.  A sleeve and glove went to both Brian Ball and Terry Sweet.

Rich Dennison – Putting Contest: What a fun putting course we had tonight.  20 was the lowest score all night.  Jay Johnston shot this right off the start and never got caught.  Tied for 2nd shooting 21 were Todd Thiel. Terry Henson, and Wayne Setinek.  It appears that the El Dorado Cup (the old flight tournament) are going along well.  Be sure to get your match played before the end of the month.

Tom Link – Tournaments: The August Partner-Partner is now scheduled.  Tom apologized for being so late in posting the times.  We’ll be playing 4 different formats in this tournament, and it should be lots of fun.  Taking sign ups for the Club Championship and Flight groups.  Last year we had 6 groupings all grouped per handicap and played without handicap.  Hors d’oeuvres will be available.  Tom noted that this is not to be treated as a buffet lunch.  Do buy some food from the course.

Old business – 2004 Renewal will be sent with your September newsletter or the Secretary will send form to those who subscribe to it via email.  Renewal rate of $75 for the renewals received by October 15.  $90 rate will apply thereafter. 

New Business – Greg O’Brien advised that the Hole-In-One insurance fund is up to $522.   That’s 174 policyholders Mr. Fuchs.  Greg then want on to advise that election for next year is fast coming up.  Elected positions at President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and (2) Directors at Large.  If you would like to be on the slate let Greg, Pres. Livy, or Tom Link know.  There are also appointed positions. If you would like to see what the job responsibility is we have Club Standard Operating Procedures that you can see which defines the position description.  The stipend for serving on the ‘Board is $300, which we use to go on a weekend golf outing that always cost us in addition to the $300.  Greg noted that if you did the math, $300 divided by 12 months it’s not a lot.

Also, the yardage bushes at 100, 150, and 200 yards were technically put in as an experiment.  We did a local rule for relief until they grow in full.  As the L.B. Open Handicap Chairman, Pres. Livy is going to submit a letter requesting they be removed.  The ‘Board supports this position.  Mel Collins asked if this is due to the bushes being just to the edge of the fairway, and about the rules for these bushes during the Club Championship.  We want to replace the bushes with something that is visible and removable.  A lot of discussion followed, including why the sprinkler heads are not marked.

One other announcement, Don Russell’s wife Karen is a member of the Seal Beach Lion’s Club.  They are hosting a tournament at Los Al Navy Course on August 20.  See Don for an entry form.

We will be in the middle of the Club Championships by the time that you get this article.  The sign ups for this event in the higher Handicaps was very disappointing (low index of 17.0 and above, one person only signed up).  We are open to suggestions from any of you as to what we can do in the future. Please contact anyone on the Board of Directors. 

The August Partner-Partner was a huge success, I think we have found a format that we can carry forward.  The feedback from everyone that played was extremely positive.  The Gross winners were Larry Grant and Tom Flynn.  We had three different Flights and the results are printed in this Newsletter and posted on the Website.

We will have a Drawing for Tee times at the September meeting for the October Tournament.  This is the dreaded “Orange Ball” Tournament.

Be sure to attend the meeting, you don’t want to miss this one.

WELL IT HAS BEEN A COUPLE OF MONTHS SINCE I WROTE AN ARTICLE AND THIS ONE MAY BE LATE BECAUSE ARE COMMISSIONERS MEETING WAS JUST HELD TWO DAYS AGO. LET ME START OUT BY LETTING YOU KNOW THAT THE PAST YEAR HAS FLOWN BY. IN FACT WE VOTED FOR THE CHAIR AND CO-CHAIR DURING OUR LAST MEETING. BILL TOWNSEND IS THE CHAIR, AND SKIP ROWLAND IS THE CO-CHAIR FOR THE COMING YEAR. THE SKYLINKS PROJECT IS A GO! THEY WILL BE CLOSING OCTOBER 1ST, AND WILL BE CLOSED FOR ONE YEAR?? THEY WILL START THE SPRAYING OF THE FAIRWAYS NEXT WEEK. THE ROUNDS OF GOLF REMAIN DOWN FOR THE YEAR AT 4.15%. THE REVENUE FOR OUR COURSES IS VERY MUCH ALIVE AND WELL. THE C.I.P. FUNDS ARE AT THIS POINT IN AN ACCOUNT TO PAY THE FIRST PAYMENT ON THE BOND FOR THE SKYLINKS PROJECT.  JAY CABALLO ASSURED US THAT THE TREE TRIMMING AT OUR COURSE WILL TAKE PLACE VERY SOON, IN FACT THEY HAVE RECEIVED ONE BID AND ARE AWAITING ANOTHER. AS FAR AS SOME OF THE DRY SPOTS ON OUR COURSE THAT IS ALSO BEING LOOKED AT. JAY COMMENTED THAT SOME OF THE SPRINKLERS WILL  HAVE TO BE CHANGED IN ORDER TO REMEDY THAT PROBLEM. IN THE COMING MONTHS WE WILL BE LOOKING AT THE POLICY AND PROCEDURES FOR THE GOLF OPERATION FOR THE CITY. THIS WAS TO HAVE TAKEN PLACE ALREADY, BUT THE SKYLINKS PROJECT COMPLETELY CONSUMED EVERYONE INVOLVED. WELL THAT'S IT FOR NOW. Welcome to October, the month that signifies the return of the Dreaded Orange Ball Tournament!  I’m sure VP Link will have all kinds of info on this most horrifying event both in his news article and at the meeting.   The Orange Ball is currently the longest running tradition in the Club, but that distinction used to belong to The Singing Hills Weekender.  For the first time in many years, we returned to Oak Glen and Willow Glen as a group, and while I couldn’t attend because of traveling with my golf team, I hear that everyone had a great time (with the possible exception of the 3 teams which didn’t cash, that is).  Kudos to Nick Zamora for putting together this trip, and for having the “guts” to risk a new format…I’m sure we’ll hear some about that at the meeting, too!

Well, Skylinks GC has finally closed, and will not reopen for a year.  The City and American Golf have done everything they can to accommodate our Club events, but be aware that our course is going to be very crowded for the next twelve months, and there will undoubtedly be some inconveniences that we will all have to suffer through.  Also, A reminder that the course will be over-seeded sometime between the end of October and beginning of November, and that will mean some soggy conditions and carts on the paths only for several weeks.

 October is the month where our Nominating Committee takes nominations from the floor, to add to those names announced last month on the slate of candidates.  If you are interested in running for an office, please get someone to put your name in nomination at the General Meeting.  The Board sets the tenor for the Club, and we need active members to help keep our Club strong, so I encourage you to get involved.  See you at the meeting.

Meeting Minutes

The monthly meeting was held September 9, 2003 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent.  The restaurant offered a fine selection of chicken, pasta, and rice for the best $6 meal in town.  President Livingstone called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. and led membership in allegiance to our flag.

The minutes from the last meeting and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.

Pres. Livingstone had a couple of announcements.  First, Scotty Brown and Ed Fernandez who won our Member-Member have advanced to the SCGA amateur net at Cypress Ridge.  Secondly, we will be correcting that was posted last Sunday at the Club Championship.  These rounds are to be played from the black tees and posted as “T” scores.  Lastly, Pres. Livingstone noted that he is presenting the option of installing Mr. Fred Gibson, and inaugural member of our club, into our Life Member status.  Motion was made from the floor to accept Fred at this level, seconded, and unanimously approved.  Congratulations Fred.

Two new members introduced themselves tonight by telling their name, occupation, and handicap.  They then went on the tour with Greg O’Brien.

Committee Reports:

Ray McElhenney - Golf Commissioner: Ray commented on how the year has passed so quickly.  The biggest item is Skylinks.  The first payment has been made.  They will continue play until October 1.  You’ll have brown fairways as they have already sprayed twice.  For a period of seven or 8 months the City will rotate between here and Rec. Park.  Noted that rounds are down by about 4%.  Jay Carballo responded to Pres. Livingstone’s letter about needing the trees trimmed and will be happening.  A comment from the membership noted that they have already started.  The tunnel will likely be painted to cover the graffiti that was recently placed on the walls.  Holes along the #11 fairway fence are to be repaired.  If there are things you know that need attention on the course bring them up to Ray.  It was noted the restrooms are not being kept in very good condition.  Ray suggests we complete the comment cards to let them know.  The money from last Saturday’s tournament will be available at the October meeting.

Pres. Livy opened the floor to Roger Scaife for Thursday Team Play (TP).  Roger stated that sign ups are posted on the board behind the computer.  Roger wants all of his players to play 2 to 3 strokes better than their index.  The events are match play.  Our opponents will be Lakewood Seniors, Little Wood (Laguna Hills), and Costa Mesa.  Jim Baber, Saturday’s TP captain was not at the meeting so Pres. Livy mentioned that there are 13 places left on the Saturday team so sign up on the board behind the computer.  Saturday opponents will be El Toro, Costa Mesa, and Mile Square.

Jerry Leininger – Handicap: It is important to remember to post your adjusted scores, and most importantly to remember to post or you will receive a penalty round.  A penalty round is duplication of your lowest differential in your last 20 rounds.

Nick Zamora – Entertainment: Singing Hills is our weekender this year.  We’ll be playing Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Sept. 26, 27, and 28.  Friday tee times start at 12:00 Noon.  Saturday is the start of the weekender tournament.  Nick plans to use a format different from what we have grown used to in the past.  Be prepared for a format of better ball-aggregate for the odd and even holes.  Determination for which will be odd and which will be even likely will not be until after play is completed.   This will most likely be the format for both Saturday and Sunday.  Tee times on Sunday start at 8:00 am.  Rancho California is a drive trip scheduled for Saturday November 1.  The format there will be 3-better ball.  Entry is $75 per player.  Beers to be made available at Greg O’Brien’s backyard on the 9th tee box.

Rick Evans reminded everyone that we have our biggest raffle at the December meeting.  If you or anyone you know have any goods or services to donate please let him know.  Rick drew two raffle tickets, and prizes went to Ruben Gonzales and Lowell Overturf (sitting at the same table).

Rich Dennison – El Dorado Cup and Putting Contest: The ‘Cup is going along well.  Everyone seems to be getting their rounds played.  (4) tied with 4 in the Putting Contest.  Splitting the prize fund equally were Terry Henson, Atul Anand, Mel Collins, and Mike Marmer.  Jim Fuchs asked questions about The El Dorado Cup which were promptly answered.

Mike Marmer – Rules: Concerning the El Dorado Cup, some have asked him how to apply handicap when a match ends all square and they need to continue on if they have already given the handicap on the initial round.  The appendix defines that the strokes are to fall on the card where they normally would.  A question was asked if you can play an unplayable lie in a water hazard.  The answer is no, in either a lateral or water hazard.  About what constitutes a stroke is if you have addressed the ball and swung with the intention of hitting the ball that is a stroke.

Tom Link – Tournaments: We are in the middle of the Flights and Championship rounds.  After two days Mel Collins and Jim Fuchs are tied for the lead at 147.  October is the Orange Ball.  Sign ups are being taken.  Each group will be given (2) orange balls that must be used.

Pres. Livingstone mentioned to the membership that 2004 Membership Renewals will be includes with this month’s Newsletter.  Renewals for those who get their Newsletter via email will be sent this week.

New Business – Greg O’Brien, Immediate Past-President: Elections are coming up for the 2004 Officers and Board of Directors.  Tonight Greg will announce the slate of people who have expressed interest.  Next month nominations will be accepted from the floor.  The slate as of today is President – Tom Link, Vice President – Rich Dennison and Tom McCutcheon, Secretary – Mike Vaughn, Treasurer – Al Ostberg, and Directors at Large – Dennis Tramer and Mike Marmer.  If you are interested in a position talk to any ‘Board member, even if it would be for an appointed position.

Old Business – The 100, 150,and 200 yard bushes, Jack is opposed to placing hard markers on the course.  He plans to move these natural markers more to the side of the fairways instead of leaving them next to them as they are now.

Raffle tickets were sold for 10 minutes.  Tonight’s prizes include a lot of good prizes including a putter, Titleist balls, gloves, a 53 degree wedge, etc…

Tournament Chairman

We ended up with a spirited competition for our Club Championship.  Jim Fuchs held off Mel Collins on the last hole to win the open division with a four day total of 294, 6 over par.  Nice going Jim.  The winner this year in the Senior Division (50 & 0ver) was also Jim Fuchs with Larry Grant coming in Second Place.  The Flight winners were Todd Thiele (5.9 – 9.4), Wayne Setinek (9.5 – 13.0) and David Pemberton in an 18-hole playoff over Paul Standish (13.1 & up).  Congratulations to all who participated.  The results of the September Tournament and the “Club Championships” are listed in the newsletter.

We will be taking sign ups for the November “Stableford” Tournament at the October meeting.  Be sure to attend so that your group can secure a spot.  This is an individual Tournament, divided into 3 Flights by Handicap.  It is also the time for you to nominate your “candidate” for the Board of Directors.  I hope to see all of you at the next meeting.

Commissioner's Report

Well it is time for another update from your commissioner. Not a great deal to report but I will give you some "tidbits". Our next commissioners meeting will be held at our course. If you would like to attend it will be on October 22nd.  The time is 3:30 P.M.. I have joined 3 different sub Committees this year. I will be on the Tournament Committee, also the Jr. Golf Committee and lastly the Capital Improvement Committee. It appears that Skylinks is going forward. The first bond payment has been made, plus the course has been sprayed. Only one small setback and that is in regards to the Palm Trees. The company that was going to oversee that part has pulled out. Now the City will move some to the beach areas, 50 will be sold and the balance will be addressed on site. The rounds of golf are still down for the month and for the year. For last month our course was down 9.16%. For the year our rounds are down 4.69%. For all the courses year to date we are down 4.87%. Course revenue is still very well off. For last month the gross income for all the courses was over 1 million dollars, and over 376 Grand going to the city. The C.I.P. funds are very much alive and well. In fact with the bond issue for Skylinks under way the 10% that goes into the fund is now being handled by the bank for the bond. Yes we do receive interest on that money. And yes if there are projects that need to be done at the Long Beach courses, we still have access to that fund. I have some course inspections forms that I will leave at the computer area in the Pro Shop. If you see a condition on our course, fill out the form call me and I will pick up the form and forward it to the City. Well I think that will wrap things up for this month.    See you at our Meeting.

Well, since I thought Arnold would be elected governor, the biggest shock in California in October was my team cashing in The Dreaded Orange Ball Tournament.  Some how, we played better with that stupid thing than without it!  This is always one of the most fun and story-laden events of the year, and 2003 was no exception.

 Everyone who attended the October General Meeting got to hear from Paul Goydos as he answered questions ranging from the quality of Tiger’s golf equipment, to whether or not Paul tests his golf balls by dropping them in cups of salty tap water (you had to be there, for that one!).  I think everyone enjoyed Paul’s frankness and humor, and we certainly appreciate him showing up and congratulate him on his great year.  If everything goes according to plan, Paul will do a Beat the Pro in our Christmas Tournament.

 As I mentioned in last month’s article, the over-seeding of the course will have taken place by the time you get this.  I encourage patience and understanding from everyone during a month or so of damp and cart path only conditions.  The condition of the course during the cold and normally dormant months should be worth the short-term inconvenience.  Kudos and thanks to Jack and the maintenance crew for the condition of the course the past year…it has been awesome!

 Remember than November is election time.  We have two contested offices and candidates worthy of your consideration to fill them.  The balloting will begin at the start of the meeting, so don’t be late.  See you there.

Meeting Minutes

The monthly meeting was held October 14, 2003 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent.  The restaurant offered a fine selection of ham, au gratin potatoes, veggies, and a roll for the finest $6 meal found anywhere.  President Livingstone called the meeting to order at 7:01p.m. and led membership in allegiance to our flag.

Past Presidents in attendance: Tom Conlisk, Steve Shure, Don Marmion, Ray McElhenney, and Greg O’Brien.

Mr. Fred Gibson joined Tom Burris and Bob Livingstone in representation of our life membership.

The minutes from the last meeting and Treasurer’s report as printed in the newsletter were accepted.

Two new members went with Greg O’Brien for the introductory tour.

Pres. Livingstone commented that Barbara Conlisk just had surgery and the club sent her flowers.  She returned home and sent a letter of thanks for the flowers and the cards for our membership.

Team Play: Jim Baber, Saturday captain made note that anyone interested in playing Team Play must have get their 2004 dues renewal to Mike Vaughn immediately.  Jim also stated that if you sign up you must commit to the whole season.  Currently there are 41 players sign up to fill 48 spots.  Our practice rounds will be October 26, November 2, and November 8th starting at 9:30.   Jim and John Davis will have pairings on the bulletin board and on the website.  As FYI it was noted that Jim just completed in a L.B. marathon for charity cause. 

Tom McCutcheon, Thursday captain noted that the Thursday team always needs players.  Their first practice is this Thursday at 10:00.  See him or Roger Scaife if you can participate. Tom noted that if you commit to play total monies due would be paid up front.  Any player will be reimbursed for times they miss.

A quick drawing from the raffle ticket barrel provided a little cash for 2 lucky winners.

Our quest speaker for a question and answer session tonight is Paul Goydos.  Paul was warned of a few members who may continue to shoot questions at him.  Paul thanked everyone for the Club’s support and how Long Beach is a great town, supportive of local athletes.  First off out of the gate Tom McCutcheon asked if Tiger was playing with inferior equipment.  Paul advised Tom that he is playing with that same equipment.  Asked if this was one of his better years Paul noted that he had a good summer.  When asked about his feelings towards all of the drivers that out there he doesn’t think there are many that don’t conform.  Paul noted that this is more on the back of the USGA, not the players.  Paul interjected that the feels the most technical advantage the golfers today have is the lawn mower.  The greens are like putting on a pool table.  Mike Marmer inquired about how the pros are paying caddy fees and salaries with the size of today’s purses.  When asked about pressure during a tournament Goydos stated that he doesn’t worry about where he is or what he needs to do at any time.  Paul notes that he always plays to the best he can, where he ends up just works itself out.  Just keeping your card is a perk.  He sees that too many get caught up in all of the hoopla along the way.  Tom Bentele asked about when a ball becomes out of balance as per a recent Golf Digest article.  Paul was asked if he feels that he plays better now than he used to and his answer was most definitely.  Paul noted that you always have to get better or you will get lapped.  It is not a big issue to Paul about who they put him with in a tournament.  He pays no entry fees in PGA tournaments.  Any preferential treatment comes from sponsors.  Steve Liebeck asked Paul about his practice schedule.  It all depends on how he is playing, but he will not practice himself into a slump.  If he’s playing well he practices less.  If he’s struggling he practices more.  Paul noted that the majority of people don’t really know their own irons, let alone the course they are playing. Paul answered Gerry Hodge’s inquiry on his thoughts about making the courses longer vs. tightening them up.  Paul feels this is all a concern that due to the equipment we have to play with.  In a sense we are beating ourselves by asking for and getting the equipment that is available today.  Dennis Tramer was curious as to how Paul sets his schedule.  West Coast courses are his first option.  He looks at the schedule and determines where he will play based on how he feels about any given place.  He commented that is you play Torrey Pines at 1,000 yards less than they do you are not playing the same course as the pros.  When asked about hitting the Pro V1 on the seam for greater distance, Paul admitted that it is part of his routine, and that Titleist has supposedly corrected this condition.  The last question from the field was from Stan Faris who inquired about physical fitness training.  Paul feels it is most important to be flexible.  He sated his favorite course last year was at the AT&T, 70 degrees and sunny, however most all of the courses were tour quality.  Paul received a big applause from the membership and was thanked for the taking the time to come to the meeting.

A hat and sleeve of golf balls were given to another lucky raffle ticket holder.

Committee Reports:

Nick Zamora – Entertainment: Singing Hills was a great success.  There was small controversy, but all was well.  Results have been posted.  Next year we are going back to San Vincente.  In November we play the SCGA Member Course.  This trip is pretty much full.  Entry fee is $75.  Nick is trying for some new places for next year.  Let him know if you have any preferences.

Don Russell – News Editor: Nothing to report.

Cairo Piercy – 9-Hole and GOM: Tonight was the last 9-hole for this year.  We had a 3-way tie for first.  GOM for September were Gross Mel Collins with a 67, and Net Rick Evans with a 64.

Rich Dennison – Christmas Derby and Putting Contest: Dudley noted that if you want to play in his $30 Derby you must play in the Christmas tournament, no exceptions.   There was a 3-way tie for the putting contest between Bill Henigsman, Atul Anand, and Terry Henson.

Tom Link – Tournaments: Orange Ball tourney went well.  Taking sign ups for the November Stableford tonight.  Notification will be in the Newsletter for the Christmas tournament.  We will be playing a 5-some event again.  As always we will have the course for all day.

Old Business – Remember tomorrow is the last day to renew at the $75 reduced rate.  All renewals after this will be $90.

Greg O’Brien took the podium to announce the slate for the 2004 Officers and Directors.  When each position was noted nominations from the floor were accepted.  President – Tom Link, unopposed. Vice President – Rich Dennison and Tom McCutcheon, Secretary – Mike Vaughn, unopposed. Treasurer – Al Ostberg, unopposed and Directors Dennis Tramer and Mike Marmer.  Roger Scaife was nominated for Director and accepted.  Greg noted that if anyone is interested in joining the Board of Directors on an assigned position to let him know.  Ballots will be handed out at the next meeting and voting to take place at 7:00 p.m.  A committee will be formed to tabulate the votes

New Business – Kelly San Jose has brought a flier for a tournament at the Navy course next Wednesday, $300 for a 4-some.  Skylinks is now closed.  It will be tough getting times at our course and Rec. Park.  Tom Link and two others will be forming a group to find courses where we can go and play.  Jay Carballo will try to help us get preferred rates.  Stan Faris wanted to announce that his team from Victoria just won the Southern California Publinks Team Play Championship for 2003.

Greg O’Brien pulled the raffle tickets from the barrel.  Rick Evans called the numbers while Don Russell and Dan Ahern handed out the prizes. Good prizes were had to be won in the likes of shirts, clubs, balls, and other goodies.

50-50 drawing pulled in $94 tonight.  $47 went to Terry Fulford and $47 went to Jr. Golf.

The “Orange Balls can be put in the closet for one more year.  The Ghosts of Orange Ball past jumped up and bit us again this year.  Our group was going along in good shape until we reached the 8th hole.  We had our “ace” Frank Followell in control of our Destiny.  Frank hit a good Drive, put his second shot in Front of the Green in two and we walked away with a smooth “7”.  That wasn’t enough though, on the next hole we followed up with a dandy “6”.  Hope the fait of your group was much better than ours, we finished out of the money.

We have taken sign ups for the November Stableford, but I do have a few openings at this time, send me an e-mail, call or see me at the meeting and I will try to get you in.

I have enclosed an entry for this years “Christmas” Tournament, it is on Sunday the 14th of December.  We will have the course all day and will limit the amount of entry’s to 180 players.  It is a 7:30 shotgun.  We will play 5somes and it will be a “true” blind draw.  The field will be divided into 5 flights and a player from each flight will be drawn for each team.  If you have not played, check with one of the Directors, they will tell you about the Derby’s that are held after the Tournament.

WELL ANOTHER MONTH BITES THE DUST. BEFORE YOU KNOW IT WE WILL BE PLAYING IN OUR X-MAS TOURNAMENT!!! AGAIN NOT A LOT GOING ON WITH THE COMMISSION. I WILL POST SOME UPDATES ON THE SKYLINKS PROJECT. THIS UPDATE GIVES YOU AN IDEA OF WHAT HAS AND WILL HAPPEN. I WILL OUT PUT A COPY BY THE COMPUTER SO EVERYONE CAN READ IT. I FORGOT TO PUT OUT THE COURSE INSPECTIONS FORMS, BUT I WILL GET THEM THERE. THEY ARE FOR ANYONE WHO MAY SEE A PROBLEM WITH OUR COURSE. YOU SIMPLY FILL OUT THE FORM, NOTIFY ME, SO I CAN PICK IT UP AND THEN FORWARD TO THE CITY AND AMERICAN GOLF. AS YOU KNOW THE C.I.P. FUNDS ARE NOW BEING MANAGED BY A BANK. THEY WILL BE GIVING US MONTHLY STATEMENTS HOPEFULLY STARTING NEXT MONTH??? THE ROUNDS OF GOLF ARE STILL DOWN. FOR THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER OUR COURSE WAS DOWN 2.67% AND FOR THE YEAR WE ARE DOWN 4.47%. FOR ALL THE COURSES THE PLAY IS DOWN FROM 2002 5.64%. THIS IS NOTHING NEW FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR PER THE CITY'S REPORTS. THE REVENUE FOR THE COURSES, INCLUDING EVERYTHING FOR THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER WAS OVER 1.2 MILLION. THE MONEY IS CERTAINLY BEING SPENT AT OUR COURSES. OUR COURSE ALONE BROUGHT IN OVER 436 GRAND!!! THE POLICY AND PROCEDURES SITUATION IS STILL ON HOLD. WE HOPE TO GET STARTED ON THIS IMPORTANT PROJECT PRIOR TO YEAR END?? WELL AS I SAID IT WAS AGAIN A SLOW MONTH, SO I WILL SIGN OFF FOR NOW.  SEE YOU AT OUR NEXT MEETING.

President's Corner

Well, it hardly seems like a year has passed with me at the helm of this ship, but it has.  This is my last President’s Message, and I want to take this opportunity to deservedly thank the men who served on my Board.  Tom Link cares very much about the Club, and will do a great job as your next Prez.  Al Ostberg is meticulous when it comes to watching our spending habits, and Mike Vaughn is extraordinarily THOROUGH!  Rich Dennison has done a great job at the tasks he has undertaken and I expect him to continue that trend next year in our Club’s most important job.  Jerry Leininger weathered his first year on the Board with great poise and diligent hard work, while Rick Evans successfully implemented some innovative improvements to his tasks.  Nick Zamora did a great job in the position that every President finds the toughest to fill and Mike Marmer educated us all on how to play the game correctly.  Don Russell has the respect of we “hard liners” and is much more pleasant and enjoyable than his perceived persona!  Cairo Piercy has served with distinction for several years and will be missed as his relocation makes it tough for him to commit to the Board.  And finally, my predecessor, Greg O’Brien, leaves the Board after filling many positions with distinction, poise and commitment.  If you get the chance, thank these guys for their efforts, as they are responsible for making our Club the great experience that we all enjoy.  

I encourage you to come to the December meeting; we will try to keep the business to a minimum so Rick can raffle his brains out!  Also, don’t delay in entering the Christmas Shotgun, as Paul Goydos is scheduled to do a “Beat the Pro” and the new 5-some format was very well received last year--it could very well fill before the meeting.  I wish you all a safe and happy holiday season and a prosperous and healthy 2004.  It has been an honor to serve as your President.

Meeting Minutes

The monthly meeting was held November 11, 2003 under the El Dorado Park Golf Course restaurant auxiliary tent.  The restaurant offered a dinner consisting of chicken, mashed potatoes, and veggies, and a roll for your generous donation of $6.  President Bob Livingstone called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and led membership in allegiance to our flag.  Bob had all the veterans in attendance stand up to be recognized.  A big round of applause for those who served so we may continue to live with freedom in our great country.

Past Presidents in attendance: Tom Conlisk, Richard Scoville, Steve Shure, Don Marmion, Ray McElhenney, Mike Montgomery, and Greg O’Brien.

Our life membership group consisted of Bob Livingstone and Fred Gibson.

Greg O’Brien took the podium to advise on tonight’s election of officers for the 2004 Board of Directors.  The candidates were identified; ballots handed out, and then collected.  Greg and two others, including one new member, went to tally the vote.

Pres. Livingstone introduced Mez White.  Mez is our new course General Manager, who was open to questions from the floor.  He had to respond to inquiries about sand containers placed strategically around the course to use as refills, and to the bunker on the left front of hole #2 being full of rocks.

Team Play: Most of this year’s team has been notified.  The team will be posted on the website and at the course.  Tom McCutcheon, Thursday captain is still working to get a full team.  If you didn’t make the Saturday team this year and can play on Thursday give Tom or Roger Scaife a call.

Richard Scoville provided update that SCGA delegates will be meeting at Virginia C.C. about the new Handicap system.  As of next month all clubs will have access to the new system, and on-line, real-time capabilities for anywhere you’ll be posting your score.

No one had any questions for Commissioner Ray McElhenney.

Nick Zamora – Entertainment: SCGA Member Course was a success.  We had 58 players.  The course was in pretty good shape considering how wet it was.  Results are posted.  As a new item, Nick provided a best Rotten Team award.  Nick hopes for us to see some new courses next year.  See him if you have an idea, he is open to suggestions.  Terry Fulford asked about the posting of scores that were played in pick-and-lick condition.

Mike Marmer – Rules: Mike will have new Rules of Golf books available at the Christmas tournament.  Mike commented that it has a new format.  One change this year is you can move loose impediments on the green.  Mel Collins asked about taking relief near the green from a sprinkler head.  Tom McCutcheon interjected that this is only available via a local rule.  We do not have that local rule here.

 Don Russell – News Editor: Nothing to report.

 Cairo Piercy – GOM: Don “Dad” Marmion took low Net with a 65, while Tony Glorioso shot an even par 72 for the Gross prize for the month of October.  Cairo noted that he has been on the Board of Directors for 4 years and has enjoyed it.  Cairo strongly recommends anyone who can be on the ‘Board to do so in giving back to the Club.

 Rich Dennison – All of the El Dorado Cup matches have gotten to the final rounds.  Rich then read the pairings.  He is running the $30 Derby at the Christmas tournament.  Get your money to him if you would like to join this group ASAP.

 Greg O’Brien re-took the podium to announce the winners in the election.  President – Tom Link, Vice President – Rich Dennison, Secretary – Mike Vaughn, Treasurer – Al Ostberg, and Directors Dennis Tramer and Mike Marmer.  Greg offered congratulations to the winners.

 Tom Link – Tournaments: We’ll have cart paths only Saturday at the Modified Stableford as they have just overseeded.  The Christmas tournament is $57 to ride and $45 to walk.  The format will be a 5-some blind draw with an A-B-C-D-E flight player on each team.  Derbies available will be $20 (or $25) Bill Johnson, $30 Rich Dennison, $40 Tom Conlisk, and $50 Tom Link.

 Old Business – Saturday’s tournament is the last day to renew to not be removed from the January, 2004 SCGA roster.  Trophies were handed out to the winners of the Flighted Club Championship.  3rd flight David Pemberton, 2nd flight Wayne Setinek, 1st flight Todd Thiele, and taking both the Senior and Club Championship was Jim Fuchs (2 plaques for Jim).

Rick Evans held the raffle without a glitch with the assistance of Don Russell and Terry Henson.  As always, great prizes were there to be won.

50-50 drawing pulled in $68 tonight.  $34 went to Ed Lane and $34 went to Jr. Golf.  

Membership drawing tonight was for $150.  Number of Larry Simpson was drawn.  Larry was not at the meeting tonight.  Next month the prize will be $160.  We will draw numbers until we hit a member who is at the meeting.

Tournament Chairman

We are at the end of the year and the Annual Christmas Tournament is upon us.  The Field will be limited to the First 180 Players that sign up.  We will divide the field into five groups by Handicap.  The lowest 36 players will be “A”; the next 36 players will be “B”, next 36 “C” and so forth.  One player will be drawn from each group to form a 5 some.  The Tournament will not be Flighted and there will not be a Gross Prize. The Format will be 3 best ball net.  The El Dorado Men’s Club pays for the Course all Day, join us, it is a lot of fun.  After the Tournament we will have our annual “Derby’s”, you must play in the Tournament to play in any Derby.

The results of the November Stableford are published in the Newsletter and on the Website.  Congratulations to our all of you that cashed, the scoring was very competitive.

I want to thank all of the Board members for their support this year.  All of them put in many hours to have these Tournaments come off on time and they have hopefully been enjoyable for all of you to play in.  Thanks, it has been rewarding and fun.

Commissioner's Report

Well gentleman this will be my last article for the year 2003!! It has really been an interesting first year. With the Skylinks Project consuming almost everyone's time, not a great deal has taken place with the commission. During our latest meeting some items came up and I will write about those a little later in this article. First the run of the mill monthly "stuff". The rounds off golf were again down for the month, with Skylinks being closed, that comes as no surprise. The combined rounds for all our courses showed a  19.05% decrease from last year , and year to date we are down 6.83%. El Dorado was up for November by 6.65%. We are still down for the year by 3.50%. The revenue generated by the courses is still very much alive and well. For November over 1 million dollars were generated by our courses. This revenue includes everything from lessons, to alcoholic beverages. The C.I.P. fund is doing very well. The balance is at 664 Thousand, and growing each month. Junior Golf has had another fine year, with over 73 Grand in that account. If you are not aware our Club donates $500.00 each year to the Jr. Golf Fund, and at our meeting Bob Livingstone gave our $500.00 check to Lisa Georgeson. As I mentioned several topics arose at the November meeting. The first being a change in the weekend reservation policy. Effective December 1ST. when you reserve a time on either a Friday, Saturday or Sunday the person reserving the time will be required to provide a valid credit card number. This change was actually adopted and approved in November of 2001, but it is now just taking effect. A question regarding exactly how this will work was brought up. If your group no shows there will be a $10.00 charge per player charged against the credit card used. If there are one or two players that no show,  a charge for each player that did not show will be applied to that credit card. At this point American Golf is looking into the situation where the group is possibly filled from a stand by list, so there is still some questions that have to be answered. Also there is a 48 window in which you can cancel and nothing will be applied to the credit card. This policy has been in effect at some other American Golf Courses and it apparently has worked well?? 

The second topic that was touched on was actually the Fourth Amendment to the lease with American Golf. This amendment was put together by the City of Long Beach and American Golf. It was done so that during the Skylinks project each party received certain concessions. I will obviously not go into every item, but the possible fee increase is an interesting situation. During and only during the Skylinks project American golf can raise the fees, but only if it stays in line with the 'CPI' known as the Consumer Price Index. This can only be done on an annual basis. This does not mean that we will be getting an increase, and it does not extend beyond the time frame of the Skylinks Project. In fact the City and American Golf will be "hammering" out a new contract that will be in place in 2004. If there are any further questions regarding these two new topics, I will be available at our X-MAS meeting. Well that is enough said. No meeting next month so my next update will be in January 2004.
